What can I bring to school for lunch?
I tried packing a sandwich for lunch once but it got soggy in my locker because its really hot at my school and the lunches at school are just gross so I don't want to eat those. (hot dogs,pizza,bagels,chips) I also tried putting one of those ice packs in my lunch bag but it melted..so what do you think I should bring?

first off you should get a lunch bag that stays cold! Go to a sports store for this.
Hear are some good lunch ideas.

-Chicken breast
-Salad with toppings like dressing, almonds, croutons, dried berries. ect.
-juice's, water,
-apples with peanut butter
-you can bring something microwavable if you have a microwave you can use at school im sure a teacher can let you use one in the lounge. so then you can bring soup, or anything else you like!

I would say bring anything really that you like to eat!

Teachers get a lot of stuff from various people during Christmas. I would go with a small box of Godiva chocolates or a Starbucks gift card. They do not want any more candles, soaps, lotions, etc. I mean, a cute ornament would be nice, nothing that says "teacher" but maybe a classy ornament for their tree, everyone has room for another ornament. I wouldn't get the monogrammed lunch bags, personally, but you could do a monogrammed tote for them.

What do primary school kids have in those bags with the school emblem on them?

This applies to the UK. During the past 3 or 4 years, I have seen primary school children taking an A3 sized bag which is the same colour as their school jumpers with the logo on it. They are also carrying a normal school bag and sometimes a lunch box or bag.

As I don't know of anyone with a primary school aged child, I cannot ask them.

they carry their school reading books that are given to them to read at home, and they take them back to school as they read it to their teacher. also sometimes the work they do at school they are allowed to take them home later

My son is going on a field trip and his teacher sent a letter out saying "bring a sack lunch. No lunch boxes." I thought a lunch box was the same as a sack lunch. Is there a subtle difference between the two? Does she just mean throw his lunch in a bag?

Yep. Put it in a brown bag or plastic grocery bag. That way he can just throw everything away and not have to worry about carrying around a lunchbox all day.

How can I begin a school lunch reform at my school?

I am a currently a high school student, and I would like to help better the lunch menus at my school. The cafeteria serves similar things every day- pizza, fried chicken, fries, and sides of fruit and salad that are very unappealling. I would like raise awareness for establishing good eating habits at school and hopefully help teach the importance of eating more than a bag of chips for lunch.

Please advise on steps I can take to start off. Thanks!

Try speaking to your school council, your class teacher and your principle.
Also discuss it with your parents, if you can get them on-side, they would probably speak to the school on your behalf, and to other parents.

Make sure you have a clear and valid argument to put forward
And remember that the school canteen have a budget to work to. so much money per pupil per day (its usually only a few pence/cents) - if you can show that they would get as good a value - or even better value - for a healthier menu, it will be a strong argument.

Veggies are cheaper than meat - a ragu, ratatouille or gumbo, which is mainly vegetable can be given some extra 'oomph' by adding cooked chicken (cheap meat)

How to store salad for school?

I always want salad for lunch, but my teacher directly after lunch is strict, so you HAVE to be on time. Because of this, I wouldn't have enough time to bring a Tupperware back to my locker. Any other ideas on how to store a salad in something that can be thrown out?

Store your salad in a plastic bag, but take a plastic plate to put it out on to eat unless you can get a clean plate at the cafeteria. Don't forget a fork!

What's the best way/product to keep a lunch hot for 4-5 hours?

I use cold packs to keep lunches cold, but what if I wanted to keep something hot? Is there anything on the market for that?

Thermos's are the safest thing. If you can't do that then just don't take it hot. IF you are keeping something hot for four to five hours and it isn't in a thermos...you are risking serious food poisoning.


Use a micro or eat something cold...don't risk your health. It should remain at 140 to be safe...anything under that after two hours is dangerous.

Keep cold foods cold and hot foods hot. Bacteria grow rapidly in temperatures between 40° F and 140° F.

Help keep cold foods under 40° F by using an insulated lunch bag or box. Store lunch bags in a cool area and out of direct sunlight. If possible, refrigerate the lunch bags.

If refrigeration is not possible, place a frozen gel pack on top of perishable foods. Or, pack ice in a tightly sealed plastic bag. You may need to use two bags to prevent leaking.

Frozen boxes of juice, applesauce, yogurt, or milk also keep foods cold, and they thaw gradually to become part of the childâs lunch. Sandwiches made the night before can be frozen individually in clean, tightly sealed plastic bags. Whole grain breads are best for freezing as white bread gets soggy.

Cold foods are often taken on field trips and picnics. To package bulk foods, fill an ice chest or thermal container with ice or gel packs, or use frozen cartons of juice or milk (placed in clean, sealed plastic bags to prevent leaking) to cover the food.

All foods placed into the chest must be cold before being packed. Prepare and refrigerate or freeze the food before packing. For example, cheese sandwiches can be prepared the evening before and frozen. At lunchtime, the sandwiches will be chilled, but not frozen.

Hot foods such as soup, stew, chili should be kept over 140° F. These foods should be heated thoroughly before packing. Next, fill a wide-mouth thermos bottle with hot water for several minutes. Pour out the water and fill immediately with the hot food. Tighten well.

Properly heated and packaged food should remain higher than 140° F for about four-six hours. To prevent burns, childcare providers and teachers should help young children open the thermos at mealtime.
