High School in Australia??!?

V

Hi, so I just moved to Australia from North America and my first day of school in Australia is in a couple of days. I just wanted to know how it is, like what do you do on the first day and what is a typical day in school like. In north America, it was different cuz we didn't have to wear uniforms and would go from class to class for the different subjects, is it like that in Australia too or is it just one class all year? And also, I just bought all these exercise books and notebooks, do I have to carry all that everyday or do they have lockers to keep them in? And is it strict or is it lenient in terms of studying and work? Im very nervous plzz help thanks.

Answer
Hey there :)

I'm a senior australian highschool student and I have to tell you, each school is different. But basically no you are not in the same class all year, you move from class to class and there are 2 breaks (recess and lunch) and usually there is homeroom class in the morning and afternoon. Some schools have lockers, but mine doesn't so we carry around a school bag with everything in it all day. What school do you go to? Look it up online and it may have some information.

And in terms of strictness, i will let you in on a little secret, the higher the grade the more fun teachers are. Like in year 7 they will be strict and stuff, but in year 11, you can have a laugh with them and not doing homework would be normal to them so they won't make THAT much of a big deal out of it.

Also don't expect any science fairs or cheerleading or big football teams, cause that's america.

OH and most importantly, in Australia, the social system is very different, it's not like in america with the jocks and the populars, and the computer geeks, it may seem like that at first but you'll realise that if you are friendly with the kids that seem to be popular they will be nice back. Sure there will be the geeks but they can be cool sometimes, and it depends on the kids in the grades, but bullying shouldn't be as bad as it is in america.

I really hope you have a good year, I'm keeping my fingers crossed it's a good year for me too, 1 year left for me :D

Good Luck.

(P.S first impressions aren't that important)

brisbane state high school?

Giggle

So I'm moving to Australia and was wondering a couple of stuff about my (probably) new school. Do you have to have their lunch or can you bring your own food and do you have to buy their school bag and stationary? Also, what's the atmosphere like there?

Answer
Lunch is never provided in Australia schools - cafeterias are unheard of here. You either bring your own or you buy it at the school tuckshop/canteen.

BSHS has a strict uniform policy and i think you would need to use one of their school bags.

You always buy your own stationEry in Australian state schools and can use whatever you wish as long as it is appropriate for the task.

BSHS is an excellent school and everyone I've known who went there has loved it - my kids had several friends there over about a 20 year period and I very much doubt if anything has changed since then. It is Brisbane's only selective government high school and nearly everyone who attends greatly values the opportunity to be there. The school has high standards and you will be expected to work hard and achieve well. If your entry was on a selective basis (rather than automatic because you live in the small catchment area) you will lose your place if you don't meet expectations in your field of excellence
