eco friendly lunch bags?

Hannah K

i need a lunch bag i can carry to high school so i don't have to "brown bag it". (eco friendly ??) it would be great if i could get it at normal stores too and NOT online. (normal stores include target, walmart etc.) any suggestions??
a bag that is NOT a paper bag that i can bring to school. like a tote bag.

Answer
Lunch boxes are NOT geeky! Maybe if you're geeky to begin with. But you'd totally be starting a trend, it could be your signature. "Hey, that's the kid with the batman lunch tote. He's in my econ class. He's super nice." Your other posters are probably the kids who think their shit don't stink.

It doesn't really matter what material you get, just check that it's a trusted brand. If it's made out of some non-recyclable plastic, that's a pain in the butt, but really, you'll be using it so many times it'll make up for itself. Donate it to a thrift store when you no longer need it, then it'll never go to waste.

Do kids still use lunch boxes or lunch bags?

Karina S

My son will be starting Kindergarten soon and well my son is a very picky eater and he is going through this phase were he only wants peanut butter sandwiches and hot dogs. So I want to pack his lunch but I know how kids can be mean if its a certain character or not.
He loves transformers so I think I will get him that one. Ill take him shopping for one. Thanks everyone! By the way when I said luncg bag I meant the one with characters too. I love the planet way too much to brown bag it : )

Answer
My kids love their lunch boxes! I would take him shopping and let him pick out the world's coolest lunch box.

Check with the school on any restrictions for lunches. Our school does not allow anything with peanut products or carbonated drinks

Looking for the BEST AUTHENTIC indian recipes/cookbooks?

Lala Lu

Hi :-) I'm American but I want to cook authentic Indian food, like Indian Housewife style NOT westernized restaurant style. Does anyone have some good suggestions for cookbooks I can try ?I have a little background knowledge but I want to be an expert :-) Thanks P.S. Anyone have a good Biryani recipe ? Mine never turns out quite right compared to my friend's Mom's.

Answer
India Cookbook: voted best Indian cuisine cookbook in the world

India Cookbook takes first place at the Gourmand Cookbook Awards 2011 in Paris

India contains 1000 easy-to-follow, authentic recipes covering the length and breadth of the country.

Phaidon's India Cookbook has won 'Best Indian Cuisine Cookbook in the World' at the 2011 Gourmand Cookbook Awards, held at Le 104 Cent Quatre in Paris last night (3 March).

Compiled from over 20 years of research by author and culinary academic Pushpesh Pant and drawing on over 1000 recipes from all over India's gastronomic regions, it is the first comprehensive home cooking guide to India's rich and colourful culinary heritage. The design and presentation of India Cookbook - which comes in a bag reminiscent of that of an Indian rice bag - has also been praised for its impact and originality.

The Gourmand Cookbook Awards is presented annually at the Paris Cookbook Fair and includes entries from authors and publishers in over 150 countries.

India Cookbook's win builds on Phaidon's previous success at the awards; Phaidon won 'Best Cookbook Publisher in the World' last year; the bible of authentic Spanish cookery 1080 Recipes was named 'Best Cookbook Design in the World' in 2008 and Breakfast Lunch Tea triumphed in 2007, winning the categories for 'Best Woman Chef Book', 'Best Cookbook Photography' and 'Best Cookbook Design'.

How do we get rid of beggars and their begging habits in India? (not in a bad way!)?

Kumar

We see kids/adults everyday in train/bus/signals/temples/market places begging for spare changes. How do we solve this?
Bull, you gave a good answer but politician will interfere in everything.

Ranjith, your answer is very much in my wave length. Politicians mostly focus on getting their expenses back, not on social welfare very much. They might even get a cut from beggars income (Royal beggars!)

Answer
I cant change this situation alone but our goverment and we can together could solve this issue. Only very few beggars are incapable but others are either begging for thier lazyness or compulsion of someone! Kids beggars, I dont know what is the purpose of child help line? Why cant they take care of those children and admit them in home care units and they can educate them there. For womens it is very easy by admitting them in some women welfare units and there they could learn lot of self employment business like dress stretching, lunch bags making, etc, etc. Even for handicaptted beggars we can apply the same thing. Old beggars can admitted in old home care units, recently, I watched in sun news, nowadays even there are also old people are doing some small manufacturings, handcrafted works, etc. So the old beggars can also do the same activities. For healthy men beggars we can arrest them there is no other way. Our goverment can allot certain amount for those home care units for every budget. So, this is only healthy way to eradicated beggars and also we can use them properly and change them into responsible citizens. But, namma madiri makkaluku thonura indha vishyam yen indha arasialvathikalugu thonna matikuthu. Very good question. Hope, india can change better one day.
@bull: I just explained my wish I dont expect nowadays politicians have to fullfill this but definitely people like me or kumar or anyone who have positive attitude will come to politics one day and they could change all this issues.

Maybe it's me . . but I don't get why woman are always looking at me . . .??!?

ShaiSongbi

Alright, here is the dang problem
First off, I am not some glamazon. I don't wear a lot of heels, make-up, earrings . . I don't have desginer bags, clothes, shoes . . . nor do i always get my hair done. ( I wear alot of stylish braids)
No, that's not me and I prefer not to be that way.
Anyways . . . I noticed (especially at work) Women are always frigging looking at me! Especially a few ladies on my team.
If I am put talking to someone, They turn to look at me or stare at me. For whatever reason, I really don't know. If i am up walking to the restroom or if I am going to lunch, i mean I could literally be doing anything and out of the corner of my eye, I can catch a few of them staring at me.
Another instance, there is this one lady who i pass everyday that speaks to me every morning. But as soon as she greets me, her eyes are snaking up and down, from my hair to my feet.
I get the whole thing about women being competitive but seriously, this is getting out of hand for me and it's starting to bother me because I don't try to break my neck to look at a chick who is standing up or be all up in someone's face or mouth when they are speaking to someone.

So I want opinions . .
Men - why do you think women stare/look at other women?
Women - why do you think we look and size up other women?
Could it be i don't dress or style myself like they do or is it just me?
LOL Women irk the hell out of me!

Answer
Hehe this reminds me of my sisters ordeal with other women looking/staring at her.
She has always wondered it and my thought was, it's possibly because of jealousy over your guys' natural beauty?
It could also be that maybe they're thinking you may not be easy to be approached (If they've not yet approached you with a greeting or have not yet met you) lol.

I've never had that problem myself nor do I stare at other women so it's really hard to say why the others do it.

It'd be funny if you were to ask them once you've caught their eyes watching you (:
Put them on the spot as to why and get answers from that source haha.

Any good lunches for school?

-

My Cafeteria lunch sucks, and it's really greasy, and fatning. I have a lot of stairs at my school, and when i eat there food i feel sick sometimes. Any good lunches ideas? Like sandwiches, salads, snacks, cakes.?

Answer
7 Ideas for Easy - and Healthy - School Lunches

1. Pack Produce
The great thing about fruits and vegetables is that they deliver a ton of nutrients and they don't require cooking. They also boost hydration and typically taste great without any added ingredients. Stick with what's in season, and you won't have to pay extra for fruit that's been flown in from Chile.

"Keep raw vegetables washed and cut in the fridge so all you have to do is pack them in the morning," suggests Christina Le Beau, blogger at Spoonfed.

Cherry tomatoes, carrot sticks, red peppers, cucumber slices, sugar snap peas, shelled edamame, berries, clementines, apples, pears, and grapes are all perfect on their own and travel well.

2. Keep it Cool, Skip the Sugar
Instead of juice boxes, include a small bottle of frozen water, suggests Kristy Bernardo of The Wicked Noodle. "The ice will keep the rest of the lunch cool, and will melt enough by lunchtime to be drinkable."

3. Think Muffins
Muffins taste great, can be eaten without utensils, and can be customized to fit in small hands (by varying the size of the muffin tin you use). "Best of all, muffins can be cooked in a big batch on Sunday afternoon, then cooled and frozen," says Charity Curley, blogger at Foodlets. When it's time to pack lunch, reach in, grab one, and put it in the lunchbox.

Here are a few easy and delicious recipes to try:

Blueberry Oatmeal Muffins and Baked Oatmeal Cups
These mildly sweet muffins - one from Two Blue Lemons, the other from Wicked Noodle - offer lasting fullness thanks to the fiber-rich oatmeal
Italian-Style Pasta and Cheese Cups and Broccoli and Cheese Pasta Cups
Two variations on a savory theme from Foodlets, and what a great theme it is: mac-n-cheese made healthy (using whole wheat pasta, eggs, and pureed beans for more protein and fiber) and they're portable.

4. Plan for Leftovers
Any dinner that doesn't require reheating or cooling can do double-duty as lunch via the miracle of leftovers. "Pack some extra dinner into lunch containers while you're doing the dishes," suggests Sarah Waldman, an integrative nutritionist and blogger at TwoBlueLemons. Cook once, feed twice - what's not to love?

Here are some lunchbox-ready dinners:

Whole Wheat Penne Pasta with Pesto & Beans
Roasted Butternut Squash Quesadillas
Chickpea Salad (sub whatever veggies your kids will eat if peppers don't fly)

5. Try a Waffle-wich.
Another lunch staple you can cook in bulk, freeze, then use on an as-needed basis are waffles. "Every time I make waffles, I do a double batch, then lay the extras on a cookie sheet, slide it in to the freezer, then transfer them to a Ziploc bag once frozen. Then, when I'm packing lunch for my 8-year-old, I toast a waffle or two and spread with almond butter and banana slices," Le Beau says. When the waffles are whole-grain, it's a great way to get some fiber in to your kid's diet, and beat sandwich boredom.

6. Embrace Snacks
This is for all the mothers of grazers out there - it's OK if your kid will only eat snacks, Waldman says. Just follow the USDA guidelines and include tennis-ball sized portions of vegetables and whole grains, golf-ball sized portions of fruit and lean protein, and a ping pong ball of low-fat dairy. Choose from an assortment of their favorite snacks: a few cubes of cheese, dried mango, whole-grain crackers, cut up veggies with humus, and homemade popcorn or granola bar would fit the bill. "It feels better to pack a lunch that I know my son will actually eat, even if it looks more like a combination of snacks than a full meal."

7. Go Reusable While you could load your child's lunchbox up with pre-wrapped individual servings or lots of plastic baggies, there's a greener way. Use reusable containers, flatware, and even napkins, says Alexandra Zissu, author of The Conscious Kitchen and blogger at AlexandraZissu.com. We try for zero waste lunches whenever we can and it's actually pretty easy to succeed." Zissu's favorite lunch container is a tiffin, a stainless steel, stackable container that allows you to store a few different foods separately, while Le Beau likes bento-style lunchboxes, particularly LunchBots and PlanetBox. "My daughter typically goes to school with a cream cheese and jelly sandwich in one tiffin and cut up seasonal produce in another. If she's in a yogurt or applesauce phase, I pour it into a baby food jar with a lid," Zissu says.

Hygine Bag?

Ali

I have a charity where I provide free daycare for parents who can't afford there children to go to a good daycare, plus breakfast, lunch, and sometimes (3 times a week) dinner. It is almost are second year so we wanted to proivide something else. We came up with hygine bags! I'm not sure how to do this, so if you can help me out that would be great. Basically we have 20 mothers (ranging from 18-45), 12 fathers, and 42 children in our care. I'm not sure how to fill the bags up. I don't know if I should have all the supplies out and each person gets a bag to put one of each thing it, or I pre-fill them and label there name on it. I know right now that in every bag (I found these cute tote bags at Walmart and they are $4 a bag) there is a bottle of shampoo, a bottle of conditioner, Aveeno (my favorite) lotion soap, toothbrush, toothpaste and a washcloth. The kids under 2 will get (insead of that) Johnson's baby shampoo, bath gel, cream baby toothbrush, baby toothpaste, and a washcloth....
How do i decide the other stuff adn who gets it?

Answer
I am sure that these people use coupons. so put a few coupons in each bag, talk to your local paper and I am sure they will donate newspapers with coupons. Hair bands are always a plus, razors and deoderant. talk to your local girl scouts and for community service they can get donations of items for you. Good luck!

Five kids, Any mommies with meal ideas?

Magie

Okay..Having 5 kids eat Breakfast, snack, Lunch, snack, Dinner and dessert through out the day is weighing on the wallet, and the food is gone within 3 days lol....Are there any money savvy, food conserving moms out there that can give me some good snack and lunch ideas? So far I've only thought of PB&J's for lunch....I need ideas! Please serious answers only! :) Thanks

Answer
Six kids here.

BREAKFAST:

*Waffles/pancakes--make your own, rather than buying pre-made frozen ones and freeze them and then the kids can heat them up in the toaster. You can have toppings like jam and yogurt that make it more nutritious.

*Make your own Egg McMuffins (egg sandwiches) and freeze them to be heated in the microwave. They are so easy. You cook the eggs in a muffin tin in the oven for 15 minutes at 350 and then add time as needed if they aren't cooked all the way through. Then you put them together with a slice of cheese and any meat and some English muffins, wrap them in plastic wrap, place in freezer bags and then I put a whole bunch in a big freezer bag. We warm them in the microwave for 2-1/2 minutes wrapped in a paper towel and they are delicious and easy. You can add veggies to the eggs before you cook them to make them more healthy too.

*Fruit smoothies--add a little ice, some fruit, and some milk and blend.

*Breakfast burritos: Scramble eggs with cheese, salt and pepper, add to warmed tortillas. You can add veggies to this too. You can make these ahead of time and freeze them as well.

*Breakfast casseroles: Google these for recipes, but most are pretty simple--scrambling some eggs, adding some shredded potatoes or hash browns from the freezer section, and adding some veggies and breakfast meat (sausage, bacon, ham) and then baking in a cake pan. You can also do these in the crock pot.

SNACKS: We have fresh fruit (sliced apples, peaches, strawberries, plums, nectarines, apricots, pineapple, kiwi, oranges, grapes, etc.) or veggies (sugar snap peas, edamame, carrots, cucumber, cauliflower, etc.) or sliced cheese for snacks. Yogurt is also a good one, but I only buy it when I can find it on sale or with coupons because it can get expensive.

You can also do fruit smoothies for a snack. Another favorite of ours is to make fruit smoothie and then freeze it in popsicle molds to make fruit popsicles to have later.

Another cheap snack is home air-popped popcorn. Of course, you have to have an air-popper for this. But once you do, the corn kernels are cheap and last a long time. You pop the corn, then put in a brown paper bag, add melted butter and salt or any other toppings that you like and shake so the popped corn gets coated. I have a friend who used to add jalopeno seasoning to his corn and it gave it a flavorful kick.

LUNCH
*Mini pizzas made on hamburger/hot dog buns. Put sauce, cheese, toppings on the open bun, put on a cookie sheet and bake at 400 for 6 minutes in the oven.

*chicken nuggets--these can be homemade and you can find a ton of recipes online that are easy enough and then freeze them, or you can buy them in the freezer section

*cheese or chicken quesadillas--I like to use pepperjack cheese for a nice flavor, but you can use any kind of cheese you like. You can precook chicken, bake in the oven at 350 for 30 minutes a bunch of chicken breasts, seasoned to your liking, and then shred the breasts fresh out of the oven in a Bosch mixer or Kitchen Aid and either freeze or refrigerate. Then you put the cheese and chicken on a tortilla, cover with another tortilla and cook over low heat on a griddle or frying pan for a few minutes (til the cheese melts) and flip it over. Cut it into eighths when it's done and serve with salsa and sour cream.

*you can do chicken salad sandwiches, tuna sandwiches, deli sandwiches. You can vary the bread or make wraps with tortillas. No need to limit sandwiches to PB&J.

I always price match when I shop and look through the grocery ads for deals. When I find a good one, like cheap chicken breasts, I buy in bulk and then premake some of the above things. I've taught my kids how to heat up the premade foods so they can get it themselves. We also limit snacking to one snack between breakfast and lunch and one snack between lunch and dinner. It helps them eat more for their bigger, more nutritious meals.

Lunchbox idea for a very picky hungry man?

dmorris514

My husband is super picky, works outside, and has no access to a microwave. He is sick and tired of sandwiches and doesn't like pasta. He wants something different and I can understand, however, I'm lost. He eats sooooo much! Not really a "rabbit food" type of guy. Lol. He works about 50-60 hours a week outside and right now the weather is a bit chilly. Does anyone have any creative lunch ideas that will fill him up?
He's not crazy over soups either. This is why I'm lost. I have no idea what to feed him because he is so picky though. Thanks for the suggestion though.

Answer
A picky eater man. A rare breed, indeed. LOL, call his mother and complain, and make her come up with lunch ideas, she did this to him. Is he a meat and potatoes guy?

The wide mouthed insulated thermos jar is the answer, and you can put in anything that will fit into it. Buy two, one for the potatoes, one for the meat.

Or buy him an insulated lunch sack or a heavy metal lunch box that you can strap a thermos into, great for hot chocolate, tea, coffee, warm punch, eggnog, [no booze of course]and buy a cold food keeper, freeze it, toss it in. My Dad took one off those metal rectangular boxes with the rounded lid, he carried mail, and it had to go into his swing box until lunch. No refrigerator there, thankfully, his was in some trees and he avoided the hot sun.{for those that are too young, in the days before mail carriers all had their own mail truck, those were greenish painted mailboxes, a mail carrier had one on his route, opened it with his own key, and could store things in it like umbrellas, dry gloves, and, lunch. On rainy days, Dad would sit in it, keeping his head dry, his long legs stuck out of it aways, he was 6'5".]
go to the plastic storage section at Walmart, they have lots of cool correctly shaped for the food storage ideas.
A hearty man salad, like chicken fruited salad. Apples, grapes, raisins, chunks of chicken, pecans or almonds, toasted and put in a baggie to add before eating it. Just put some Mayo or Miracle Whip in a little jar, dribble in some orange juice, and shake. Keep dribbling until the mix is pourable, pour and stir. Put in a man muffin, like cranberry orange, or zucchini.

I like to make a baked cheesecake, I cut it into servings, and wrap it in foil, and freeze it. Then I just grab a slice, toss it in the lunch bag, and it is thawed by lunch time.
Love magic cookie bars, they are filling, and would be sturdy enough to handle some rough handling. Bar cookies are not so delicate, and do well in a lunch bag.

I would make like some roast beef and gravy, cut the beef into easy to bite pieces, and put some mashed potatoes and some butter into another container.
I make a recipe with round steak, just cut the beef into nice chunks, roll it in flour, sear it both sides, and make a sauce of a can of cream of mushroom soup, a envelope of Lipton's onion soup mix, and a half cup of water. Slow simmer it for a couple hours, it comes out so oniony and tender. Could serve it with boiled or mashed potatoes, or rice.
Shepard's pie is great. Chicken and dumplings would work well.
Chili is a good meal. Beany wienie, beef stew, breakfast casserole with tater tots and cheese and eggs, apple bread pudding with a caramel sauce.

Anything that he will eat, make a double batch for supper, and put the leftovers in both your lunch sacks for the next day. If he is anti leftovers, choose things that will freeze well, wait a week or two, defrost and heat it up and dump it into the thermos. Meat loaf freezes well. Roast pork would work.
Anything BBQ would work, pulled pork, pulled chicken, beef.

Toast up some bagels, and put a cream cheese based spread and a knife in his lunch. I cut parmesan and a little garlic powder into cream cheese for a spread, served on onion bagels. I mix honey and cinnamon and sour cream and cream cheese, then dump a can of cranberry sauce [the kind with whole berries] on it and refirgerate. Just spread it on. Yum.

what is a cheap &easy lunch for my husband to take to work? besides a sandwich?

Kim

my husband spends about $100/week on just lunch! he refuses to make a sandwich for himself to take to work like normal people. he's a big baby and very picky. i can't even make a sandwich for him bc he complains the bread gets soggy or something. so he buys lunch everyday, and snacks at convenience stores, everyday. i was thinking about freezing chili or something, but he said he couldnt eat that 2 days in a row. he's always in a hurry in the morning so he can't make anything in the morning before work. pleeease, what are some other lunch ideas that are quick and easy and don't turn gross from being in the refrigerator? he likes all 'ethnicities' of food (indian, korean, american, mexican, etc). thank you!
he is supposedly traumatized from getting food poisoning one time. so he doesnt like re-heated leftovers from the night before for lunch. and he wont eat food thats more than a couple days old bc he is convinced he will get food poisoning. please help me :( lol

Answer
Y'all clearly have more problems than just his spending $20 a day on lunch. I'll do my best, but don't expect miracles.

If he has access to a microwave, you can send him with frozen meals. They will keep fine in an insulated carrier for 6 hours. I took an Amy's Organics frozen meal to work for lunch every day, tossed the frozen package on a shelf in my office at 7:45 every morning, and nuked it between 12 and 1. It was never thawed, even not being in an insulated bag. I thought the $5 for the Amy's Organics was a lot, but even buying high-end frozen dinners is cheaper than buying lunch out!

To save more than that, you can make meals from leftovers in microwavable, sealable containers. You can make extras from dinners you are cooking anyway and freeze them into meal-sized portions. Select a meal from last week or the week before to keep the variety interesting.

You can also send salads in air-tight containers with a separate container for the dressing. The frozen meal will keep it cold in that insulated bag. In addition to green salads, you could think about chicken salad, tuna salad, pasta salad, rice salad, tabbouleh, quinoa salad, bean salad, and so on.

If you're using whole-wheat bread and he's complaining about it getting soggy, you could try putting the bread in a bag and the filling in another container or bag and let him assemble them at eating time. I don't have a suggestion for white bread--I never use it BECAUSE it turns into a soggy mess.

Can you give him a huge menu of possibilities and let him choose and plan so he has buy-in to the idea? Persuading him to give up his $20 lunches and trips to the convenience store might not be as easy as just handing him a lunch pail. I might be tempted to re-think the whole plan from a completely different angle. For example, if he's eating a huge meal at lunch time, why does he need another huge meal at supper time? You could save yourself a lot of trouble and work if you just fix the sandwiches for supper and forget about changing his lunch habits.

Edited to add:
If he got food poisoning only once, he is a fortunate man. Most people who frequently eat in restaurants average 3 to 4 episodes of foodborne illness in a year (the "stomach flu"). It's actually less risky to eat food that was prepared at home using normal preventive measures (such as washing cutting boards every time they are used and washing hands before handling food).

At any rate, FREEZING the leftovers will pretty much eliminate any possibility of their incubating viruses or bacterial infestations. Microwaving them appropriately will both thaw and re-cook the leftovers.

Edited again to add:
Thinking it over, I would not want to fix food for a person who is likely to blame me if he picks up a digestive ailment. His fear of food poisoning seems irrational.

Answer
sorry...but no. you want a good, sturdy, but fashionable bag (preferably a backpack). you will be taking books and binders and lunch boxes or whatever you have for that day home, and you will probably want a backpack or tote thats good for your back and bigger than the one you picked out. for paramore...if you really like that band...check out hot topic or somewhere else with band stuff.
