Any ideas for things to bring in my lunch?

I'm trying to bring my lunch to university with me because i'm trying to save money. Problem: i really dislike sandwiches. What are some other ideas?

Answer
When I was an Grad student, I use to bring the lunch kits made by StarKist - they consist of a can of tuna or chicken with an easy open can, a packet of mayo, a packet of relish, a wooden spoon and crackers. They were pretty good, did not need refrigeration or heating up. I also use to bring leftovers that didn't always need reheating, cheese cubes and sliced summer sausage - although we did have a fridge and microwave in our department lounge so if I wanted I could reheat things - and I kept things cool with a frozen bottle of water in an insulated lunch cooler. Other things I kept in my backpack to munch on were homemade Trail Mix, fruit such as apples, oranges, grapes, peaches, pears and banana, crackers, cookies, candy bars, etc.

For a healthy snack, make your own Trail Mix using a combination of any or all of the following:

Dried cranberries - Craisins
Dried cherries
Raisins - plain or chocolate covered
Dates
Fancy Mixed Nuts - salted or unsalted, your choice
Dried Mango
Dried Papaya
Coconut flakes
M&Ms
Banana chips
Apple chips
Dried Peaches
Dried Blueberries
Dried Pineapple
Granola

Keep in a sealed container or ZipLock bags to keep fresh.

For healthy lunches, I like turkey, beef or ham with cheese and lettuce sandwiches or wraps made with tortilla shells - make your sandwiches on whole wheat or multigrain bread and use whole wheat tortilla shells; salads with the dressing on the side; homemade chicken or tuna salad using just enough Miracle Whip or mayo to hold the ingredients together; celery sticks, baby carrots, radishes, cherry or grape tomatoes with some salad dressing on the side for dipping...

Good lunch ideas that don't need to be kept cool or heated?

Snarly

I need to start packing a lunch when I go back to work in January because buying lunch each day is costing me too much and is not good for my waistline.... my only problem is I am really fussy with packed lunch. For example, whenever I put an ice pack in to keep it cool, it makes my sandwiches soggy so they don't get eaten. So now I can't put an ice pack in. I also can't heat anything at work.

So far I have got popcorn and juice packs to take, but I am looking for something more substantial to put with it!

Answer
We have a microwave & a fridge, but I keep some things at room temperature to eat them lukewarm after cooking them in the morning & eating half of it for breakfast. For instance,
curried rice & veggies & cooked apples with raisins or chopped dates & spices
Trader Joe's frozen entrees in bags, stir fried in the morning with extra steamed veggies added
warm or cold mac 'n cheese with steamed veggies added
oatmeal with apples & raisins (still good, milk or not)
all or half of a sweet potato baked that morning
Any of those can be dished up into plastic lidded containers placed in bread wrappers if needed.
Another possibility is a small wide-mouth thermos to keep them warm. If you have any doubts about the safety of what I'm doing, then by all means be safe & put cooked food in a wide-mouth thermos. In fact, that's what you'll often see the outdoors workers eating from so they'll have hot soup with their sandwiches.

Others can be taken out of the fridge in the morning & kept for several hours without much danger. Blue ice could be taken with them if you feel the need. Sandwiches can be in plastic sandwich boxes or in bread wrappers.

cheese sandwiches
cucumber & cheese sandwich--cut into fourths & put a slice of cucumber & a sprig of cilantro onto each fourth.
hummus sandwich--vinegar in hummus works well as a preservative.
almond butter & low sugar fruit preserves
cheese sandwich on pita bread with ruffly lettuce
crackers & cheese
bagel & cream cheese
homemade oatmeal muffins or cookies
I always use soy mayo (Nayonnaise) because I figure that it's less likely to spoil than a standard egg mayonnaise. Other possibilities are oil and herbs on the bread and/or a sprinkle of vinegar

Other items from the fridge can be in serving size containers or in plastic bags with twist ties. For example,
baby carrots or carrot sticks
olives
cashews, blanched almonds, or mixed nuts
plain yogurt with cardamom, cinnamon, or garam masala stirred into it
pasta salad made on the weekend
bean salad made on the weekend
a whole avocado--peel & slice at lunch & hope that it's good.
the usual apple, banana, or other fruit

I also take frozen things for the microwave & confess that even after eating breakfast, I still want to eat some of these quick lunch items at morning break & will still be ready for lunch by the time noon rolls around. It saves time & money not to rush off to the coffee shop for a chocolate muffin or a bagel.

Plain yogurt can be made overnight in a wide-mouth thermos. Heat the milk to 180 degrees then cool it down to around 95-110. (I've seen some disagreement about the 2nd temp.) Pour into a hot thermos & add a big spoonful of plain yogurt as a starter. Use a good brand from the health food store as the starter. Stir on the lid, wrap in a dish towel, & place in an insulated nylon container to keep it warm overnight. The next morning, with a little bit of luck, you'll have fresh yogurt in your thermos. It's a variation on an ancient miracle. Carry it in the thermos or put it into a little lighter weight plastic container. Over time, even plain yogurt starts to taste sweet.

Also note that the Japanese people use divided containers called Bento Boxes & have made quite an art out of packing these with a variety of dishes. After hearing about these, now the makers of plastic carriers in America have followed suit, so now you can find similar divided dishes in our big box stores, some with spaces for blue ice beneath the food. If you want to buy any sort of lunch bag or container, you'll find the best selection in the late summer when parents are buying school supplies for their kids. Other times of the year, it may be a little hard to find the insulated bags that you want.

Aside from all that fancy stuff, some of us just toss our food into some sort of cloth tote bag & head off to work. For more food, I may use a tote bag with a small cardboard box I've set inside, a good idea, too, if some things are best kept upright to avoid leakage. It's best if these bags get washed every weekend. Have an extra bag in case one is still drip drying. Forget any ironing. No one cares. Commercial cloth lunch bags may have cute sayings like, "Brown Bag," but I usually want something a little bigger than that with handles on it. I get really hungry when I'm at work. Don't forget your toothbrush btw.

Some tips on how to look like a serious pro photographer?

smallbluep

What are your recommendations on fashionable clothing and accessories that will make me look the part of a serious pro photographer? Is a photo vest "in" these days? Does it help if I wear logos like National Geographic Society, Canon, or Nikon? Any ideas on how I should style my hair, should I grow a beard, have a pondering reflective look, etc..
GambitGrrl, I'm not interested in developing the portfolio. I just need to look more "pro".
Actor the suit is a great idea. Do you think it will clash with the photo vest? I think I might have to just carry the extra gear in a camera bag.
fhotoace you have heard that your first impression needs to be the best impression right?
Samurai I am not trying to fool anyone. I am trying to bring out the pro photographer that resides within. I just need a sharp looking outfit.
I like the idea of the rugged manly look of the press photographer. I can definitely see myself sporting that look and I can bring it out confidently. One more thing about that look is will women find it appealing? I was thinking of working out to build more muscle mass and getting clothes that are a size or two smaller to accentuate my musculature.

I obviously don't want to look like a bum and smell the part. Any recommendations on men care products like fragrances to round off the look. I'm talking about aftershaves and body sprays.I've seen commercials for AXE body spray. Will it draw women like bees to nectar?

Answer
There are really two basic types of pro photographers that would be seen in public and you should choose which one you want to look like before you determine your photographic style. These two styles are so different from one another that I will address them separately. It is up to you to decide which one makes you feel more professional, because when it comes right down to it, nobody but you will know which one is more comfortable for you. This is a frequently asked question in this section, so I hope you do not mind if I use one of my standard boilerplate answers as I think you will find most of the information is completely useful for your needs.

Press photographer:

First, stay awake for at least 24 hours before being seen in public. Do not shave for at least 48 hours, but do not exceed 72 hours visible growth. Carry two cameras with lenses attached. If will not matter if they both function or not, since you are only have the second body for the sake of appearance. It should at least resemble a 35 mm SLR, though, so it is large enough to hang by a neck strap. Carry a gadget bag instead of wearing a vest. Keep the strap just short enough to make it look uncomfortable, but you will actually be able to use it to stabilize your elbows during a shot in much the same way as one would use a rifle sling to stabilize the barrel the old fashioned way. Vests were helpful when film was king, but how many spare memory cards are you going to stash in a vest anyhow? You would have to put soda cans inyour pockets to make the thing look suitably full and it's just not worth it. With a gadget bag, you can get the straps tangled as everything hangs from your neck and you will look busy without even moving a muscle. You can also carry lunch and some Diet Coke or Red Bull in the gadget bag. You can buy a small insulated bag to put inside a proper photographer's gadget bag to keep them cool. These insulated bags are available anywhere, but my recommendation is that you use Yahoo! Shopping guide. Click on "Bags" and then "Insulated" and you will find a good one. Buy a LowePro or Domke camera bag, but cover up the brand with duct tape. Put at least a 200 mm zoom lens on your main camera, like a 70-200 or 18-200, although the 70-200 is bigger, so it's better. 70-300 is even better. Use logo gear, like a strap, but if you want to look like a pro, take a black permanent Sharpie and black out the brand name. Wear a baseball cap from a sporting event or a sports team, but not a camera company. Look harried and confused.

Portrait photographer:

Ask fhotoace to fine-tune this suggestion, but dress is casual but neat. Dockers pants are prefered, but L.L. Bean are acceptable. An Izod polo top is preferred, but Brooks Brothers is acceptable. My choice is a tan top, but navy is acceptable. Sand pants, but khaki is acceptable. Do not wear socks unless you think they provide some value in protecting the expensive inner soles of your expensive shoes, which should be docksider-style shoes. Clarks are preferred, but Sebago is acceptable. You will find others here who have a strong preference for the khaki L.L.Bean pants, navy Brooks Brothers polo, and Sebago shoes and I can not argue with them. Many of them will also wear socks. Once you have arrived at wearing this level of clothing, your comfort is probably as important as the actual label on the clothing. If you don't feel good, you don't look good, and if you don't look good, why would anyone hire you to take their picture? Looks are everything, so go to a fine clothing store and try on various brands and colors to see which one feels best to you. These are the clothes that you should buy, as long as you do not leave the core group of brands mentioned above. It's the same as the Nikon vs. Canon debate. You can have no more than 2 days growth of facial hair, but if you do not have that exact amount, you must shave clean before appearing in public. One camera is all you ever carry and the strap should be absent or dangling. The camera should have a battery bulge like a Nikon D2Xs or one of the Canon Mark's. A strobe is required, especially on bright sunny days. If you have more equipment than that, an assistant is required. It doesn't matter how your assistant dresses, so long as it is not quite up to your level, as YOU are supposed to be the best looking person at the shoot.

Your assistant should have your equipment loaded into a cart with large pneumatic tires. These tires are essential, because have you considered how very likely it is that you will be traversing rough terrain which would subject your equipment to excessive vibration? How are you going to control that vibration? The pneumatic tires have a built-in shake reduction capacity that will make it possible to go over the bumps without shaking your equipment. They are also good for navigating on the sand, if you are doing a beach shoot. Because of their broad contact patch, you will find that they are very well suited to equipment cart stabilization.

If this information is not adequate for your needs, please click on the pencil icon and "Add details" to let us know how we can be of further assistance.

~~~~~~
ADD'L
~~~~~~

Women are drawn to rugged men dangling cameras around their necks like wasps are drawn to gold jewelry. Telephoto lenses are a great asset, because they are sure to be impressed with the size of your lens. As far as the fragrance, don't axe me because I don't know and I won't answer a question that I don't know anything about. Usually.

What is your opinon on food allergies as a disability needing accommodations?

kids lunch bag set on Tinkerbell Insulated Lunch Bag Tote with Handles Box Sack ...

Many schools these days are forced to demand or even ban that there be "peanut free" classe rooms or entire schools. I know many people have mixed reviews. What if only one child has a peanut allergy. Do you think that WHOLE school should accommodate by not be allowed to bring peanuts or peanut containing items? Do you think school have a right to search the other child's items just in case someone didn't sneak peanuts inside? Is this a reasonable accommodation?
What about the autistic child who refuses to eat anything BUT peanut butter and child? What about colleges that do not offer gluten free menus. Do you think the kids parents have a voice to sue that school (these things are really happening)

I really don't know what to say bout it myself

Answer
1) I think it is unfair to ban peanuts in a school because what about all the other foods people are allergic to? Are we going to ban all of them too? A girl had an allergic reaction to kiwi served in the cafeteria where I worked last year. They had to call out the paramedics. They didn't ban kiwis from school. If we ban all the foods people are/can be allergic to, then what are we going to eat?

2)Banning these foods does not teach the child to make responsible choices. If we ban peanuts at school, are the parents going to push for bans everywhere the child goes? Are they going to ban peanuts at the job the child will work at one day?

3) I think the schools are setting themselves up for lawsuits saying their school is peanut free. How are they really going to enforce that? Who has the time? With all the new school cirriculum guidelines and state testing, who is going to have time to check bags, lunches, and make sure kids don't have traces of peanuts on their person. Do most schools have money for peanut sniffing dogs?

How can I make my cookie business grow?

GnatClappe

I'm only a kid and I sell great cookies to my classmates at lunch. I'm making a good profit and I get sold out each day. How can I make a larger profit and get more people to know about it?

Answer
I work for a local pizza shop in town, they have ohhh around 42 shops now. They buy local cookies from a small company in bulk bags of 15 per bag. We then saran wrap each cookie and put a sticker on it and put it in a bin on the front counter. We sell the cookies for 99 cents each. They are soft ball sized chunk chocolate chip cookies. I would guess they are buying the cookies for around 50 cents each but in bulk.

You could talk to your local pizza shops about doing something similar. Or your local gas station and carryout places (quick marts). You could sell them in small gift baskets on a small web site. You could make the web site from a blog (www.wordpress.com) and then get a dot com (godaddy.com) and a shopping cart (paypal.com) and have your own small biz there as well. The site would cost you $10 + time and the shopping cart I believe is a fee per sale.

You could go door to door in neighborhoods like the girl scouts and others do. You could even hire on a few friends and say give them 25 cents per cookie sold. If you sell them at $1 each and costs you say 30 cents to make. You still make 45 cents for doing nothing but letting them sell. And you sell as well to make that much more.

You could talk to the local grocery store (manager) and ask them if you can set up a table outside the door on a saturday or such to sell cookies. Remind them that they allow girl scouts and such to do the same. Then get a $20 card table off craigslist and sell your cookies to those coming out from grocery shopping.

You could talk to your church and sell them in the lobby in baskets w/ a change box next to it so people just put the cash in. Honest system being a church, no person needed to tend to the cookies. Then in return for allowing them to let you sell them there. Give 10% donation of the sales to the church or the youth group or such. You get, they get, win win situation.

Set up a few baskets nice w/ cookies and such in them. Then find a few cute girls at school to work for you and to go to local office buildings after school. Let them go around and take orders for the basket from office people. Give them like 10-15% of each basket order as their pay. If they sell, they make money, if they don't, they make nothing. So say they go around to two office complexes and get 30 basket orders. The following week you deliver those basket orders and collect the money. Giving you a week to get the orders set up, cookies made, etc between time of order and delivery.

There are many ways to sell cookies, the biggest thing is getting them in front of people. After that their stomachs take over.

Ways to entertain a nine and six year old (both girls) and make them listen?

lunch bags for girls on Fairy Cupcake Lunch Bag and Flask: Bliss Gifts - A gift shop for ...
lunch bags for girls image

No one

I babysit two little girls during summer and I'm already running out of things to do! They always want to go to this brook that is about a mile away but whenever we can't they get really mad, so I need things to distract/entertain them.
Also, the nine year old always tries to argue with me about everything and she just doesn't stop! Any advice? Thanks
Also, I don't have my license and we aren't walking distance from like anywhere.

Answer
- Build a tent in the living room out of kitchen chairs, couch cushions, and anything you can find/use. Cover with sheets and blankets and let the kids pretend their camping, playing house, do puzzles in there... whatever they can think of. The more props the better, like flashlights, stuffed animals that live in the forest, a pretend fire...

- Dress-up/Makeover. Put on a fashion show with music and blow bubbles at the models. Search your house and ask their parents for old clothes or halloween stuff that you can use. Put on face paint or maybe the 9 year old might like to try wearing real make-up just for fun. They can put make-up on you and give you a make-over.

- Art. Grab some old magazines, glue, and scissors and make collages. Food art is good. Glue cereal, pasta, or beans to construction paper. Kids go nutty for stickers and paint. Paper airplanes are also effective time wasters and other origami art.

- Skill Testing Games. Obstacle courses, ring toss, bean bag toss, tiddly-winks, bowling... Look around the house or the garage because there's always some ball you can bounce into some bucket. Create a scoring system and keep track of points if you're feeling competitive, or maybe just keep track of personal bests. Games can be made harder if it gets too easy, or made easier for the 6 year old who can't keep up.

As for the 9 year old arguing with you, ask her to repeat to you what you just said to her. For example, let's say you instruct the children to clean up the toys before lunch and the 9 year old protests. You would respond in an even tone with, "What did I just ask you to do?" If she doesn't answer you or doesn't remember, you give her the instructions again. If she protests again you say, "Stop. Use your listening ears. What did I ask you to do?" and you go around in this circle until she complies.

Another tactic I use in conjunction with the first tactic is the When/Then technique. When you do as you are told (clean up, wash up ect), then you can have lunch / watch tv / go to the brook ect

How many bags of chips should I get for about 30 teens? And 2 liters of soda?

Izzy

I'm having a Halloween party next month, and my mom needs me to come up with some kind of budget for the food. The party is going to have 30 teens max, and my dad is catering the pizza and we'll have plenty of candy out, too. Knowing that there's going to be that food already, how many bags of chips should I get, and what kinds? And how about 2 liters of soda? Thanks!!

Answer
This depends on the teens. Girls may be polite and drink the soda like its going out of style while the boys will devour pizzas and chips. For a teenage crowd, and I have experience in this, to be on the conservative side of things, I would go with 3-4 people per pizza (beware the pigs) and 4 people to the larger bags of chips (pick what you like -- if it's left over, you get to eat them). If you are thinking you may go overboard, you could go to a wholesale store and get the variety chip bag boxes of individual bags. That way you will have a lot of variety and the teens will only take what they need and whatever is left is yours for school lunches and munchies. As for soda, I would go with what others suggested and figure on 2-3 per bottle. On this one, limit variety. Get one regular and one diet type of soda. You are not going to please everybody. For instance coke and diet coke. Also, get some water bottles. You can get a case in the market sometimes for $3 on sale.

Schools coming soon ( 17 days to be exact D: ) And I need some lunch ideas! Last year, I really didn't eat a good lunch, and I NEVER ate breakfast! ( I know tisk tisk tisk ) I am not allergic to any foods, and I can have any kind of food I want at my school ( but try and make the nuts limited ) So if you know of any lunch and breakfast ideas that would be great!
My school has a microwave.... I should have said that
My school has a microwave.... I should have said that

Answer
Breakfast is one of the most important meals of the day so itâs a good idea to choose something that is relatively nutritious so that you start the day on a good note. Most mornings are rushed too, so quick and easy breakfasts save time in the morning. Consider making the items listed below from scratch and in large quantities. You can keep the extras in the cupboard, fridge, or freezer for quick breakfasts all week long.

omelets (include deli meats, cheeses, and fresh vegetables)
pancakes, waffles, or french toast (use fresh fruit as the topping instead of syrup as an alternative option)
muffins (made with fresh fruit)
whole grain english muffins or bagels (with peanut butter or cream cheese spread)
fruit and yogurt parfaits
cereal (avoid sugary cereals)
granola bars or breakfast bars (make from scratch using dried fruits like raisins and craisins)
sweet potato home fries (instead of traditional white potatoes)
sausage or dried beef gravy (serve over biscuits, toast, or home fries)
baked oatmeal (with fresh fruit or mixed nut topping)
trail mix (use dried fruits and assorted nuts for a lot of protein)
turkey bacon
chicken sausage

Sometimes it will be difficult to make something especially healthy for breakfast, so you will need to rely on convenience food items rather than skipping breakfast entirely. Some of the more unhealthy things on the market that you can eat are listed below. Just make sure to consume them in moderation.
donuts
toaster strudels
pop tarts
frozen pancakes, waffles, or french toast sticks
tasty cakes (such as Little Debbie brand)
fruit filled danishes
strudel bites
apple dumpling
cinnamon rolls/sticky buns
pie slice
microwavable bacon or sausage links/patties
frozen hash browns

Packing a lunch for school and/or work can be a challenge. Often times you donât have access to a microwave or refrigeration. Eating the same thing every day can get old after a short time as well. My suggestions for lunch are listed below. Consider taking an insulated lunch bag to keep some of these things cold until itâs time to eat. You could also freeze your beverage (water, juice, etc) and use it as an ice pack if you donât have a lunch box.

Wraps, salads, and sandwiches are good for the âentrée courseâ of your lunch. Use different deli meats and cheeses every week so you donât tire of the same flavors. Itâs good to make homemade dressings or switch up the condiments on these items as well. Use as many fresh ingredients as possible to increase the nutritional value as well. Another idea would be to cook chicken breasts, fish, and pork tenderloins in large amounts over the weekend and keep the cooked meat in the fridge or freezer as an addition to your sandwiches, wraps, or salads. Itâs a nice change to deli meat. My family also enjoys chicken, tuna, or ham salad sandwiches every so often. And you can never go wrong with peanut butter and jelly!

As the âside dishesâ for your lunch, I would suggest any of the items listed below.
fruit, yogurt, pudding, or jello cups
fresh vegetables with ranch dressing
granola bars
popcorn
trail mix
chips (take salsa or a cheese dip for tortilla chips)
pretzels
100 calorie snack packs (cookies, brownie bites, etc)
special K cracker chips
dry cereal
fresh fruit (like apples/bananas with peanut butter, orange slices, grapes, etc)
tasty cakes (Little Debbie brand)
bologna and cheese cubes
broccoli, macaroni, pasta, or potato salad
crackers (goldfish, animal crackers, cheese or peanut butter filled sandwich crackers)
dried fruit (raisins, craisins, banana/apricot/apple chips)
deviled or pickled eggs
cheese curls or cheese balls
fun sized candy bars
mixed nuts
gummy candy
marshmallows

I need some healthy and easy recipes for lunch?

Jordan

I want some healthy and easy recipes that I can make for lunch. With cheap ingredients and that I can eat on a regular basis. Also maybe some healthy snack ideas?(preferably cheap) thanks!

Answer
I like to make chicken salad for lunches. Itâs healthy, fast, and full of protein to keep you full for a long time. Just boil 4 skinless/boneless chicken breasts (around $7), then dice into small squares. Mix in a big bowl with 1 cup mayonnaise, ¼ cup mustard, 1 tsp lemon juice, 1 diced onion, 5 diced stalks of celery, salt & pepper (around $5). So, for a total of only 12 bucks, you have lunch for every day of the week.

I pre-portion the Chicken Salad into ziplock sandwich baggies and keep in the fridge, so they are ready to go for each day. Just use a small insulated lunch bag with a freezer pack, to keep the food fresh until lunch time. For a snack, I bring along a bag of baby carrots and ranch dressing. I work in an office, and this is a great lunch for Mon-Fri. Saves me bundles of money and is much healthier than eating fast food every day. If you want, you can take bread to put the salad on, but since I eat low-carb foods, I skip the bread.

What are some vegetarian foods I can pack for lunch?

I go to college, but live at home, so I have the wonderful opportunity to bring food from home instead of buying the stuff in the cafeteria (I've tried it; it's terrible). Problem is, I don't know what to bring. It will have to be something that can do without refrigeration, and it would be even better if I didn't have to get an insulated bag. So, room-temperature vegetarian food, please!

what do suggest I pack for lunch and dinner for my hiking trip?

phammy

My Science club is going on a hiking trip soon. I've never been hiking before so I am wondering what kind of food I should pack for lunch and dinner and I do not want to eat peanut butter and jelly sandwiches the whole time.

Thanks.

Answer
Check with other members from your club. They probably have great ideas about what you can pack and where you can get it from. You have not give alot of info about the accommodations so it is hard to say. If there is a campfire at the lunch or dinner site, you can freeze bottle of drinking water and place it in an insulated bag along with a fresh bag of salad. There are plenty of dressings that only require room Temperature prior to opening. (They are marketed for the lunch crowd). Hidden valley ranch makes really cute small travel cups of dressing that would be perfect. The frozen bottles of water would keep the lettuce cool.

MRE's from a military surplus store make for great meals and they usually have alot of variety. If you have an outdoors store in your area (LIKE DICKS SPORTING GOODS) they have freeze dried meals.
In walmart you can find starkist tuna kits. They have relish, mayo and crackers in a kit with a spoon and crackers. you can mix it together to make tuna and crackers for an easy and cheap lunch. If you choose this option be sure to bring a few zip lock baggies so that you can take your trash with you and it wont stink upyour bag.

Trail mix will make for a good snack (walmart sells this also or you can make your own) for unbetween meal energy.

Q. I get so sluggish and exhausted. I feel like I can't even type...Sometimes, I even put my head down. Can someone help one this?
- I sleep 7-8 hours a night.
- I am a Receptionist (data entry).

Answer
Oh--can I relate--first I have to disagree with the coffee and tea answer. Hurts more than it helps for most.

Your work environment has a lot to do with it----do you have natural light--as in a window?

If possible, take a short break right before the "sluggish hour" and go for a walk, preferably outside. Fresh air and motion stimulates blood flow, increases heart rate, heightens alertness.

I am a woman nearing middle age, that is if I live to be 100, and I have found some things that work for me.

Keep hydrated--I know this is almost trendy in the US these days, but it is so important. Doesn't have to be expensive bottled water. I freeze bottles of water and take a couple to work each day in a small cooler bag with my lunch. The ice melts through the day, I have cold, refreshing water all day, and it keeps my lunch in the bag cold. I add fressh lemon for a little extra flavor.

Eat small amounts frequently thru the day-- a good mix of protein, vegetables or fruit, and some carbs. Depending on your work situation, this may or may not be possible, but your employer may give you the okay for several short breaks over one long lunch hour if it adds to your productivity.

Do I have to say get the right amount of sleep? Too much is just as bad as not enough and can really add to that 2:00 pm drop off syndrome, experience speaking. Adjust your hours of sleep and find the right balance.

Finally (almost)--are you bored with or resenting your job?? Time for a change, that will wake things up!

Finally-(really)--check with your doctor. There are a number of physical problems that manifest themselves as fatigue.

Good luck!

How to show interest in a girl I like?

So there's this girl I like in work but i'm not sure if she likes me too. I think she does because shes always happy to see me. Is there any discreet ways I can show her i'm interested in her without being too direct?

Answer
Be friends first. Try to control the libido and see the
girl as a person, not another
conquest. Your first goal is to
get to know abouther, not just her look, as cool as that
may be.

SAY hi: go to her lunch table.
Make eye contact and smile. Eye contact is a perfect way to let a girl
know you like her without
saying so. Look her in the
eyes, don't shy away and
don't check her out below
the neck at this particular time. If she meets your eyes,
smiles back or blushes, then
you may have a chance. If she
frowns or gives you that
"what the heck?" look, back
off for a while. Remember though, she may get a lot of
attention from men, so that
look may be automatic if you
are a stranger or near
stranger. Don't give up hope
over one little frown, maybe she has something in her
shoe? Wait a while and try
again later. Don't forget to
tell jokes and act funny just
make her laugh. It's the
ultimate ice- breaker!

Start a conversation. Chat about something safe,
like school, or the weather,
and then ask her something
about herself. Critically, listen to her answer! Don't talk
about yourself too much.
Keep the focus on her.

Compliment her on something she is good at or
interested in, rather than
how she looks. She was born
with her appearance. Look
for some kind of skill like drawing, singing or a sport. That said, many women put a
great deal of effort into
looking good, so if she has a
new haircut, or a new bag,
it's OK to notice that too,
especially if she has good taste. Be genuine with your
compliments.
Keep showing her
attention. If this is a fleeting encounter and will be
your only chance to show her
your feelings, flirt a little more than you would
normally.

Be Patient. By giving her your undivided attention, she
will eventually get the hint
that you like her.

Look for indications of
reciprocal interest. Try to read her body language. Is she leaning into you? Did she
just touch you lightly on the
arm? Does she hold your
gaze? If so, then the odds
are she likes you too. Once
you have figured this out what you do next is up to
you. Options might include asking her on a formal date, swooping in for a gentle first kiss, or even the daring French kiss.

Is it safe to send meat in my son's lunch at school?

proud nerd

My son has an insulated lunch bag, but still has four hours between the time he goes to school and the time he eats lunch. Is it safe to give him ham or turkey sandwiches? He can't have peanut butter, since a child in his class is allergic to peanuts. What other types of sandwiches can I make for him?

Answer
I have the same problem with no peanut butter. So I freeze the sandwich container over night (empty) and put a small ice pack in the lunch bag for the day. It works for us and she says her fruit and juice stay cold as well.
Hope that helps...

Kid friendly recipes for school lunch?

Bunny

What are some kid friendly recipes that I could use for my children's lunch boxes? Example Macaroni/pasta salad. I am a picky eater but my children are not. So when it comes to things like macaroni salad I know it has all kinds of veggies which is what I want my kids to have, but have no idea how to make it or what goes in it cuz I don't eat that stuff myself. Although I don't eat some things I still encourage my kids to eat them. This is the first year that we are actually sending them to school with their own lunch. I don't want to send them with pb&j all year and could really use some ideas/ suggestions. I do not mind cooking if I need to. They are not allowed to use a microwave at school, because they are in elementary school. So it goes in the insulated lunch boxes/bags. Thanks in advance to all who help. It is all appreciated.

what do suggest I pack for lunch and dinner for my hiking trip?

insulated lunch bags walmart image

Trail mix will make for a good snack (walmart sells this also or you can make your own) for unbetween meal energy.

cold omlette for work lunch?

Becki

Would a thin omelette (like http://thisleanjourney.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/11/Omelette-Wrap.png ) be good for lunch? I was planning on treating it like a wrap, but we don't have a fridge or anything to keep it in, so would it be ok just in my lunchbox for 4 hours? Would it go off? Would it even taste ok? I was just going to put ham cheese and tomatos in it? what do you think?

Answer
Make the wrap and put it in the freezer, wrapped well in foil and then newspaper. It should thaw by the time you're ready to eat it and still be chilled.

I personally would leave the egg out, because I don't like cold eggs (unless it's egg salad).

If you don't have a fridge at work, invest in one of those small, insulated, soft lunch coolers or bags, and then you don't have to worry about keeping your food cold. Target and Walmart have them and they're not very expensive.

What are locker safe lunches to send to school?

Katz

My child is starting middle school and we were told to pack a lunch for at least the first couple days.

Answer
NO PICKLES!!!!! The locker will stink for a whole month and the lunch box. A peanut butter and jelly sandwich is the way to go(not too much jelly). Any prepackaged lunch stuff that you can get at a store nearby like: chips, fruit cups, jello, gummys. My mom just bought some new heavy nylon, velcroe closing lunch bags that have an ice pack built in the inner walls of the bag. You freeze it the night before you use it. It doesn't smash the sandwich because it opens wide and unfolds at the bottom for more space. Good Luck!!! :)

lunch bags for executives on ... Lunch Box Set (with bag)+ Executive Water Bottle (with Bag)(505+401
lunch bags for executives image

Hey Bud, l

I had a problem at work with my lunch disappearing out of the community refrigerator at work. Despite placing my name on my lunch bag and placing letters on the fridge asking the culprit to stop, my lunches kept disappearing. I eventually had enough and decided to take matters into my own hands. I laced my lunch with liquid laxative and stuck it in the fridge, only to have it disappear a few hours later. I was quite surprised to find out that it was my supervisor who was stuck on the toilet for the remainder of the day, thus identifying him as the thief. Fortunately, I didn't stick my name on the bag this time, but he has swore to the office staff that he'd find out who did it. Any suggestions?

Answer
Turn your problem into an advantage. Unless your supervisor is the top executive or the owner, you have a great advantage. Somehow get an unidentifiable note to your supervisor that indicates you know who has been taking others food out of the fridge and if it happens again you will let his/her boss know.

Since he swore to the office staff he would find out, he as already convicted himself. So if you need to take the matter further, your co-workers can attest to his eating a tainted sandwich - one tainted just to catch the thief.

It also makes a great trump card if he gets on you for some other petty thing.

[edit] Plot
Lester Burnham (Spacey) is a 42-year-old father and advertising executive who serves as the film's narrator. "I'm 42 years old; in less than a year, I'll be dead. Of course, I don't know that yet. And in a way, I'm dead already." Lester's family life is messy â his wife Carolyn (Bening) is an ambitious realtor who feels that she is unsuccessful at fulfilling her potential, and his 16-year-old daughter Jane (Birch) is unhappy and struggling with self-esteem issues. Lester himself is a self-described loser: boring, faceless and easy to forget. Lester is reinvigorated, however, when he meets Jane's friend and classmate Angela Hayes (Suvari) at a high school basketball game. Lester immediately develops an obvious infatuation with Angela, much to his daughter's embarrassment. Throughout the film, Lester has fantasies involving a sexually aggressive Angela and red rose petals. The Burnhams' new neighbors are Col. Frank Fitts, USMC (Cooper), his dissociated wife Barbara (Janney), and his teenage son Ricky (Bentley). When confronted with the gay couple living two doors down, Col. Fitts reacts with homophobic disgust.

Over the course of a few days, each of the Burnhams individually makes a life-changing choice. Carolyn meets real estate rival Buddy Kane for a business lunch and ends up beginning an affair with him, and later takes up gun lessons. Seconds away from being downsized, Lester defiantly blackmails his boss for $60,000, quits his job, and takes up low-pressure employment as a burger-flipper at a fast food chain. He continues to liberate himself by trading in his Toyota Camry for his dream car, a 1970 Pontiac Firebird, starts running and working out to "look good naked" and to have a body that will impress Angela, and starts smoking a genetically enhanced form of the marijuana he enjoyed in his youth. Jane grows increasingly disillusioned with and distant from Angela, allowing herself to develop a romantic relationship with Ricky. Ricky and Jane bond over what he considers to be the most beautiful camcorder footage he has ever filmed, that of a plastic grocery bag dancing in the wind; meanwhile, Ricky also quickly befriends Lester and secretly acts as his weed supplier.

Col. Fitts, concerned over the growing relationship between Lester and Ricky, roots through his son's possessions, finding footage of Lester working out in the nude (captured by chance while Ricky was filming Jane through her bedroom window)- slowly bringing him to the conclusion that his son is gay. Buddy and Carolyn are found out by Lester, who seems to be completely unfazed by his wife's infidelity. Carolyn, who is almost more devastated by Lester's indifference than by her being exposed as an adulteress, is further dismayed when Buddy reacts by breaking off the affair. As evening falls, Ricky returns home to find his father waiting for him with fists and vitriol, having mistaken his drug rendezvous with Lester for a sexual affair. Realising this as an opportunity for freedom, Ricky falsely agrees that he is gay and goads his father until Col. Fitts throws him out. Ricky rushes to Jane's house and asks her to flee with him to New York City - something she agrees to, much to the dismay of Angela, who quickly protests. Ricky shoots her down with her deepest fear: that she is boring and completely ordinary. Devastated, Angela storms out of the room, leaving Jane and Ricky to one another permanently.

An emotionally fragile Col. Fitts approaches Lester's garage/workout room in the pouring rain, and Lester is concerned and attempts to comfort him, but is taken by surprise when Fitts kisses him. Moments later, Lester finds a distraught Angela, and the two of them prove to be in the appropriate mental spaces to be on the verge of sexual intercourse. The seduction, while powerful, is derailed when Angela confesses that she is a virgin. Now viewing her only as an innocent child, Lester immediately withdraws, his affections shifting to that of a father-figure, and they bond over their shared frustrations with and concern for Jane. Lester asks "How's her life?" and is pleased when Angela says that Jane's in love. When Angela then asks how Lester is, he realizes, to his own surprise, that he feels great. A happy Lester sits at the table looking at a photograph of his family in happier times, as Angela is at the toilet, unaware of the gun being slowly led into the camera frame and

What can I bring to school for lunch?
I tried packing a sandwich for lunch once but it got soggy in my locker because its really hot at my school and the lunches at school are just gross so I don't want to eat those. (hot dogs, pizza, bagels, chips) I also tried putting one of those ice packs in my lunch bag but it melted..so what do you think I should bring?

Answer
first off you should get a lunch bag that stays cold! Go to a sports store for this.
Hear are some good lunch ideas.

-Chicken breast
-Salad with toppings like dressing, almonds, croutons, dried berries. ect.
-juice's, water,
-apples with peanut butter
-you can bring something microwavable if you have a microwave you can use at school im sure a teacher can let you use one in the lounge. so then you can bring soup, or anything else you like!

I would say bring anything really that you like to eat!

What do teachers want as Christmas gifts?

Renee

I thought of monogrammed lunch bags. Any ideas from Teachers? Trying to spend $15-$20 for each teacher

Answer
Teachers get a lot of stuff from various people during Christmas. I would go with a small box of Godiva chocolates or a Starbucks gift card. They do not want any more candles, soaps, lotions, etc. I mean, a cute ornament would be nice, nothing that says "teacher" but maybe a classy ornament for their tree, everyone has room for another ornament. I wouldn't get the monogrammed lunch bags, personally, but you could do a monogrammed tote for them.

My school is going on a Europe Trip in March. How can I get 4000$?

Q. We need to start paying now I have no money and I really really want to go. I have no money, I tried job hunting but no will hire me. I tried asking the bank for a loan but they said they don't give loans to minors. The trip is like 3300$ but I need to buy a camera and you can't be in Europe with no spending money. Any suggestions? No crime related ideas thank you!

Answer
We recently assisted a local student raise $4500 for his People-to-People study in Europe. Ours is a small, rural community in which everyone pitches in to help one another. His family is by no means wealthy, either. Some of the things he did to raise money include:
- Got local restaurants to donate meals for a "Dining Around Town" raffle.
- Got a local jewelry store to donate his and hers watches for another raffle.
- Set up a table at local fairs to sell raffle tickets and solicit donations.
- Bagged groceries for tips at local supermarkets
- Got the nicest restaurant in town to split its profits from all patrons who ate lunch or dinner on a particular day and said they were supporters of the student. (You need to have a very altruistic restaurant owner for this to work. Luckily she is a good, church-going lady, and the boy is very active in the church his family attends)
- Did lots of yard work for neighbors
- Spoke to the Chamber of Commerce about his study opportunity and what it would mean and what he would bring back in knowledge and experience to share with his classmates. Business leaders pitched in nearly $600 on the spot.
- Washed lots of cars. Got his classmates to pitch in and help. His parents bought pizzas for the car washers, but he kept the money toward his trip.

Also, speak to your grandparents and relatives. An opportunity to experience European culture is something no one should miss. Let them know what a great experience this will be for you. They might have resources to help you out.

Above all, show spirit and initiative. If people see you are out there working to raise money for your trip, they will be more likely to help than if you sat around like a beggar in the marketplace. Good luck! (By the way, you can get a decent digital camera on eBay or Amazon.com for around $100.)

I'm having the hardest time finding a bag that isn't hideous and "sporty" and that's also big enough to carry what I need. I have to find a bag that can hold my 17" laptop and cord, my teaching binder and book, my lunch (bento box) and a coffee thermos, some file folders, a novel-sized book, and then my keys, wallet, phone, etc. In the past I carried around a big heavy backpack, a purse, and a lunch bag, and I am really looking for something that can make me feel like I've got it much more together!

I'm willing to go up to about 250 for a really good bag (but if you've got much cheaper suggestions, I'm all ears!)

Important to me: Professional / sleek looking (maybe leather or with accents, but definitely no windbreaker material). It can be a backpack or messenger bag (I think I'd prefer the latter, because I wear a lot of dresses and the last backpack I had just loved to hike my skirts up) but should not be painful to lug around, because is it really any wonder that I get back pain? Padding and weight distribution go a long way!

Answer
I had problems finding a really sleek looking backpack that did not have a lot of hideous young patterns and made with the typical cordura backpack material for messenger bags. The sleek and professional looking messenger bags were mainly too small to be able haul all of your things. So, I suggest maybe a tote bag:

There are probably many things people may have not thought of needing until they arrived to live on the oil rigs, like clean sheets or something?? Anyone know what that item(s) might be?

Answer
Former roughie here.

Old Lady is right. SOCKS, SOCKS, SOCKS. Good heavy wool ones and lots of them. Make sure he goes out with at least one pair per day of his hitch. You might not always get to wash them and you are nuts if you wear them for more than one shift.

With socks there is also good BOOTS. You can make due with the cheaper rubber steel toes, but trust me, the expensive ones are totally worth it. I made due with insulated Baffins for the longest time. Had problems with blisters and traction on steel plating (extremely important) Bought a pair of heavy rubber boots commonly known as "inverts" (because they're necessary for invert drilling) Cost me $250 but they were totally worth it. Also if he's going out now, get the -100 degree boots ($200)as well. Maybe you won't wear em, but better safe than sorry. There will be days when you NEED them. (Give him a gift certificate for Marks or something and buy them in Calgary or Edmonton. You will get the right size and save big bucks)

CELL PHONE- Absolute necessity. Get one with analog and digital coverage

CASH- Come with a couple grand in your pocket or access to it. Lots of companies expect you to cover living expenses for the first couple weeks until you get your first subsistence pay.

CERTIFICATIONS- H2S Alive and Standard First Aid are absolute necessities to work in the patch.

FIREPROOF CLOTHES- You have to wear either all natural clothes of fireproof synthetic stuff, which can get pricey. He'll go through alot

BAGS of rubber GLOVES, glove insulators, "green king" gloves (NO LEATHER)- You would be amazed how many pairs you'll go through

Beyond that there is lots of other stuff that is good to carry with you but not as necessary. Extra blankets and sheets for example. Small cooler to keep food. Lunch kit. It depends on where you end up. Maybe you'll be in a motel and need to cook for yourself. Maybe you'll be in a good camp and not need anything. It's hard to say. A good winter jacket for camp and travelling is a good idea.

What you will not have to worry about with most employers in personal protective stuff. By law they are supposed to supply that sort of stuff. If they don't have it there, they will tell you what you need and give you funds to go get it. For example very often companies have color coded hard hats (Green is almost a standard color for new/inexperienced guys. Less often you see things like blue for management, red for safety etc)

Good luck. One last word of warning though. Watch the price of oil. How much work that is out there directly corresponds to that in more industries than you'd expect.

What are some creative things to do with rubber bands?

Pink

I need some things that you can do with rubber bands other than tie up your hair, make a ukulele, make a bracelet, make a dream catcher, or a giant rubber band ball. Some creative things please.

Answer
1. Keep Food Fresh â Simply wrap a rubber band around a bag of chips, salad, or baking flour to seal in the freshness.Rubber Band Lunch
2. Act as a Reminder â Wrap a rubber band around a specific page in your planner (and also around the front cover to prevent bending) or around your wrist as a reminder to get something done.
3. Rubber Padding â Wrap a couple rubber bands around a TV remote or ash tray to prevent it from sliding and scratching the tableâs surface.
4. Hold Various Objects Together â â¦like pencils or index cards. This one is obvious.
5. A Bookmark â Wrap a rubber band around the front cover and through the middle of the book to whatever page you finished on. Next time you pick up the book the first page that isnât rubber-banded will be the page you left off on.
6. A Hair Tie â Perhaps you could make a ponytail.Rubber Band Hair Tie
7. A Paper or Poster Scroll â Roll it up and put a rubber band around it. Itâs ready for storage.
8. A Safety Strap for Eye Glasses â Break a rubber band in half and tie each end to the part of the glasses frame that sits over your ears. You can secure the glasses to your face if you make the rubber band short enough.
9. Finger Exercises â Bunch all your fingers together and place them through the center of a rubber band. Spread your fingers out and let them contract. Or, wrap a rubber band from your index finger to your pinky and move your index finger away from the other fingers. Repeat this process for the other fingers.Rubber Band Finger Exercises
