what are the best healthy cookbooks specifically for lunch?

wendy!

i am looking for the best cookbooks for a healthy lunch.
no online recipes please.

Answer
I swear by the Brown Bag Lunch Cookbook by Miriam Jacobs. The recipes are adult friendly, and actually quite good. There are creative ideas in here which have inspired me to think of other lunch ideas.

For the kids, I go with The Top 100 Recipes for a Healthy Lunchbox: Easy and Exciting Ideas for Your Child's Lunches by Nicola Graimes. The recipes in this book are interesting and innovative, and most of the recipes are sure to be kid-pleasers.

Five kids, Any mommies with meal ideas?

Magie

Okay..Having 5 kids eat Breakfast, snack, Lunch, snack, Dinner and dessert through out the day is weighing on the wallet, and the food is gone within 3 days lol....Are there any money savvy, food conserving moms out there that can give me some good snack and lunch ideas? So far I've only thought of PB&J's for lunch....I need ideas! Please serious answers only! :) Thanks

Answer
Six kids here.

BREAKFAST:

*Waffles/pancakes--make your own, rather than buying pre-made frozen ones and freeze them and then the kids can heat them up in the toaster. You can have toppings like jam and yogurt that make it more nutritious.

*Make your own Egg McMuffins (egg sandwiches) and freeze them to be heated in the microwave. They are so easy. You cook the eggs in a muffin tin in the oven for 15 minutes at 350 and then add time as needed if they aren't cooked all the way through. Then you put them together with a slice of cheese and any meat and some English muffins, wrap them in plastic wrap, place in freezer bags and then I put a whole bunch in a big freezer bag. We warm them in the microwave for 2-1/2 minutes wrapped in a paper towel and they are delicious and easy. You can add veggies to the eggs before you cook them to make them more healthy too.

*Fruit smoothies--add a little ice, some fruit, and some milk and blend.

*Breakfast burritos: Scramble eggs with cheese, salt and pepper, add to warmed tortillas. You can add veggies to this too. You can make these ahead of time and freeze them as well.

*Breakfast casseroles: Google these for recipes, but most are pretty simple--scrambling some eggs, adding some shredded potatoes or hash browns from the freezer section, and adding some veggies and breakfast meat (sausage, bacon, ham) and then baking in a cake pan. You can also do these in the crock pot.

SNACKS: We have fresh fruit (sliced apples, peaches, strawberries, plums, nectarines, apricots, pineapple, kiwi, oranges, grapes, etc.) or veggies (sugar snap peas, edamame, carrots, cucumber, cauliflower, etc.) or sliced cheese for snacks. Yogurt is also a good one, but I only buy it when I can find it on sale or with coupons because it can get expensive.

You can also do fruit smoothies for a snack. Another favorite of ours is to make fruit smoothie and then freeze it in popsicle molds to make fruit popsicles to have later.

Another cheap snack is home air-popped popcorn. Of course, you have to have an air-popper for this. But once you do, the corn kernels are cheap and last a long time. You pop the corn, then put in a brown paper bag, add melted butter and salt or any other toppings that you like and shake so the popped corn gets coated. I have a friend who used to add jalopeno seasoning to his corn and it gave it a flavorful kick.

LUNCH
*Mini pizzas made on hamburger/hot dog buns. Put sauce, cheese, toppings on the open bun, put on a cookie sheet and bake at 400 for 6 minutes in the oven.

*chicken nuggets--these can be homemade and you can find a ton of recipes online that are easy enough and then freeze them, or you can buy them in the freezer section

*cheese or chicken quesadillas--I like to use pepperjack cheese for a nice flavor, but you can use any kind of cheese you like. You can precook chicken, bake in the oven at 350 for 30 minutes a bunch of chicken breasts, seasoned to your liking, and then shred the breasts fresh out of the oven in a Bosch mixer or Kitchen Aid and either freeze or refrigerate. Then you put the cheese and chicken on a tortilla, cover with another tortilla and cook over low heat on a griddle or frying pan for a few minutes (til the cheese melts) and flip it over. Cut it into eighths when it's done and serve with salsa and sour cream.

*you can do chicken salad sandwiches, tuna sandwiches, deli sandwiches. You can vary the bread or make wraps with tortillas. No need to limit sandwiches to PB&J.

I always price match when I shop and look through the grocery ads for deals. When I find a good one, like cheap chicken breasts, I buy in bulk and then premake some of the above things. I've taught my kids how to heat up the premade foods so they can get it themselves. We also limit snacking to one snack between breakfast and lunch and one snack between lunch and dinner. It helps them eat more for their bigger, more nutritious meals.

How long does an insulated bag work for?

~ <3 ~

I'm going to be at college for 12hrs, plus another 2hrs driving time.

If I were to keep some food in an insulated bag, APPROXIMATELY (to your best knowledge) how many hours max would it stay fresh for if:

-the food was reallly hot or frozen?
-it was just sorta cold?

Thanks.

Answer
I found this for you. Hope it helps!

Lunch Bags & Boxes
The first thing you will need is a container in which to pack the lunch. It doesn't need to cost a lot of money. For adults a small cooler makes a great lunch box. Fred uses a medium sized cooler. He is usually gone for 24 to 48 hours, so he needs alot of food to keep him going. For children and teenagers, you can usually find inexpensive lunch boxes and insulated lunch bags at yard sales and thrift stores.

Small children often prefer a plastic lunch box with cartoon characters on the side. I suggest you buy these as cheaply as possible. They only last for a year or two before the children drop them or the latch breaks. At $6 to $10 a piece, buying brand new boxes has never been a good investment for me. I have purchased them new when I desperately needed the thermoses that came with them. After the plastic lunch box broke, I purchased replacements from my local Goodwill. I continue to use the same thermos year after year.

If the art work on an older lunch box is shabby, you can easily replace it. Use rubber cement to glue down a new picture (cut to size) and then cover the picture with clear contact paper. I've done this, and it lasted almost 2 years, until the lunch box cracked and became unusable. Amy D. describes the process in detail in the first book of The Tightwad Gazette.

For older children insulated lunch bags work best. They don't have the juvenile connotations of plastic boxes with matching thermoses, so older kids usually don't object to carrying them. I like them because they don't break when they get drop-kicked across the livingroom by a budding football player. Since they have soft sides, it is easier to fit more food and odd-shaped containers in them too. They usually have zipper closing and shoulder straps for carrying them. I buy the largest ones I can find because I find them easier to fill. Many modern insulated bags have several extra zipper pockets and sections on the outside to carry little extras like napkins, spoons and salt or pepper packets. My boys like these but they aren't really necessary. Purchased brand-new, insulated lunch bags cost between $5 and $15. If you wait until back-to-school-sales you may find them cheaper. Over the summer they can often be found at yard sales. Insulated lunch bags usually do not come with their own thermos, so you will have to use some you already have or buy them separately.

Do kids carry lunch boxes any more??

lana_sands

It was one of those things I did as a kid. I had my trusty brown metal "How the West was Won" lunch box for 4 years. By 5th grade I did the brown /plastic bag thing. Not having any little kids in the family I was wondering. Or are mothers just too lazy to make a kid a Ham & Cheese sandwich in the morning?

Answer
Yes and no....kids carry lunches to school, but the method has changed. They have insulated lunch bags to help keep food fresher. They still have the popular characters of the day too.

No, in that schools are in a position to offer nutritious and delicious foods. I think it is great that kids have a choice!

what are the eco alternatives to zip lock bags?

DrNutritio

I still need to use this type of bag looking for an alternative that is earth friendly? Anyone know?

Answer
Tupperware. Or for packing sandwiches for lunch, just wrap them in waxed paper.

For the freezer, use freezer paper for anything that doesn't contain liquid, and Tupperware for things that do.

You can also use glass canning jars for most things.

There are some lunch meat brands that are packing their product in resealable containers. I use these all the time for things like leftovers. And I run them through the dishwasher to wash.

You can wash out the ziplock bags and use them more than once. It is a pain though.

Just a thought.

How can you keep a sack lunch cold?

Q. I usually bring lunch boxes to school but this year I am going to bring my lunch in a brown paper bag. How can I keep my lunch cold? Is freezing my water bottle bad?

Answer
No, that would work or one of those freezer blocks wrapped in a plastic bag(to stop the bag getting soggy.
Remember , if you go the water bottle route DON'T fill the bottle full as Water expands when frozen and may split the bottle

lunch bags????? help?

eeee

can somebody please help me find a nice lunch bag .something not too mechanical or complicated at an affordable cost :):)

or suggest any name brands?? yayy

Answer
Depends if you want to buy a lunch bag online or at the store. Or it also depends on where you live as well, and what type of lunch bag you want (male, female, kids?)

Online, you can get a girly lunch bag with your name monogrammed on it. Or you can simply buy one without your name on there.

I'm not sure if you live in the states (I'm assuming you live there...), or anywhere else, but Target has a few cute lunch boxes and one where you can decorate it yourself.

Uhh, I live in Canada and I usually get my lunch bags at a store called Bentley. I go over the top and buy girly-girl one's with fake diamonds, pink embroidery, and all those cute attachments and I'm 17...

How do you bring lunch in high school?

Matt L

I'm a freshman in ontario, canada. school starts tomorrow. i've only been attending a private school my whole life but i'm going to a public high school so i don't know what the differences are. for lunch, up until now, EVERYONE carried this lunch bag at my privaet school:
http://goshopping.thestar.com/shop/product--catId_1002903__locale_en__catCrumbIds_1002463-1002903__productId_8209656.html

which their parents packed.. now i'm going to a public high school so i have no idea how the other kids pack.

so MY QUESTION: how do kids pack their lunches in canadian PUBLIC high schools? like in a plastic bag, a brown paper bag, or just the insulated bags i showed you?? or do most kids just buy their lunches from the school cafeteria? how do kids eat on the first day of high school??
so would it be okay to bring a lunch bag like above or would people think i'm a little kid or something?

Answer
Well, at my school, most kids buy...but of the few that do pack (that I've noticed), they use plastic bags and just throw them away when done.

Question about my lunch?

Loverrrr

If I put a sandwich with just ham on it in a ziplock baggie in a brown paper sack in my
locker. Will it still be good by lunch time?

Answer
i wouldnt try it. insulated bags are small and cheap, and if you dont wanna buy an ice pack, put a small bottle of water in the freezer and BAM! cold water and an ice pack in the same container ;)

how to make brown bag lunches?

Q. I work in a construction type trade.
I can't take frozen food, although I can keep it cold enough to stay fresh till noon, I have no way to cook it. Hot food, will typically stay warm enough to be safe but who wants to eat soup when your working in 100* temps all day. Sandwiches are good, but I can only do that so much before the thought of another sandwich makes me cringe.... any ideas? also keep in mind I typically do not have running water to clean up, so something that requires "hands on" food prep is out of the question.
oh, and if it is not cheap... I may as well go out.....

Answer
Put your tea (with lemon & sugar if you want it) in one of those quart-size plastic jugs with a lid and freeze it. Use it in an insulated lunch bag to keep other things cold. If the quart of frozen tea isn't sufficient, use the reusable gel-packs you buy and keep in the freezer specifically for this purpose.

In the pocket of the lunch bag, pack folded paper towels and a travel pack of Wet Wipes. Pack knife-fork-spoon, either an "extra set" or plasticware. Pack travel size salt and pepper.

Things I have safely packed for lunches and toted in the insulated lunch bag with a cold pack, packed in either a plastic bag or a small plastic container:

Baby carrots and celery sticks
Crackers of various types
Cheese chunks/slices
Boiled eggs (if stuffed/deviled, put the eggs back face-to-face to minimize smears)
Salad greens, either the ready-to-eat pack from the produce case or home-packed, with separate container of salad dressing
Fried chicken pieces (if you like it cold as some people do)
Cold ham (or other meat slices) to eat alone, on crackers, or on salad
Tuna salad (with or without bread)
Chicken salad (with or without bread)
Chinese chicken salad (the kind with ramen noodles in it)
Pasta salad
Potato salad
Tomato-and-fresh-mozzarella salad
Cole slaw
Apple slices
Pineapple chunks
Grapes
Strawberries/blueberries
Graham crackers spread with cream cheese (or peanut butter)
and so on and so on and so on.

Is the job of an ironworker hard?

Q. Tommorow I start work as an ironworker...I'm so nervous..should I be nervous? Is the job as hard as people tell me? What can I do to keep me from being scared and nervous? Thank you

Answer
Ironworker is probably the most physically demanding construction job, and also one of the best to develop a good work attitude (not to mention muscles!) and pride in your work. It involves very heavy lifting, working in heights, overhead hazards and more. And, it is probably the easiest job to get hurt in, so the best I can do for you is give you some advice before you start:
- NEVER try to be a hero - it's the easiest way to get really hurt and be out of comission (and a job!), especially in the beginning while you develop more strength (and you will, trust me!). If there's something that's too heavy to lift, ask for someone to give you a hand. If they make fun of you (and they will, especially since you're a greenhorn), just roll with it or joke about it, after you're done thank your helper, and let your helper know that you owe him or her one (Yes, HER, one of the best ironworkers I ever met was a woman on a chemical plant construction job in Georgia!).
- You'll get teased and even harassed in the beginning. Just roll with it and do the best job you can and don't try to be too smart for your own good. One day it'll be your turn to be the one having a poke at a greenhorn.
- ALWAYS watch out around you. As I said, it's dangerous work with heavy things moving all around you, holes you can fall into, snow, ice and mud to slip on, things on the floor to trip on or catch your foot on, and many, many more hazards. And there's always a knuclehead out there that doesn't give a darn about the people around so you better always watch out for your own skin.
- Measure TWICE, cut (or drill) ONCE. Norm Abrams (of TV's 'This Old House' fame) was right about that for carpentry work, and it equally applies for ironwork and welding.
- Ironworkers have it worst as far as weather. After all, you're the first ones on the job before there's even a building, and your job is pretty much done just about the time they cover the building shell up and turn on the heat or the A/C!! So, do your best to wear clothing and protective gear and gloves appropriate for the weather. There's no easier way to bust your knuckles that trying to work tools with stone cold hands while you're shivering. If you'll have a locker or will bring a bag, always have an extra pair of socks, underwear and undershirt in a sealed plastic baggie. You'll never know when you'll need them.
- Stay well hydrated. Applies equally well for Summer and Winter. A good Summer trick is to put in your bag or lunch bag a frozen bottle of water. When it thaws out later in the middle of a hot day you might be the only one with an ice cold drink in your hands!
- Get a good night's rest every night before work especially during the first few weeks. If you go out with the 'gang' (and you probably will), just make sure you'll be rested AND ALERT the next morning. It's a lot easier to get hurt if you start out the day tired.
- ALWAYS wear the required safety equipment. If it is not the one you wear daily and are familiar with it, ALWAYS inspect it before using it. If it looks questionable, bring it to the foreman's attention. I doubt you'll get any gripe for bringing it up and it will let your supervisors and management in general know that you respect safety which is a key quality they will look for when promoting workers to supervisory positions.
- ALWAYS wear the required safety equipment. (just wanted to make sure you heard it again - this is the most important advice you'll ever get!).
- Best of luck!!!

I need some healthy and easy recipes for lunch?

Q. I want some healthy and easy recipes that I can make for lunch. With cheap ingredients and that I can eat on a regular basis. Also maybe some healthy snack ideas?(preferably cheap) thanks!

Answer
I like to make chicken salad for lunches. Itâs healthy, fast, and full of protein to keep you full for a long time. Just boil 4 skinless/boneless chicken breasts (around $7), then dice into small squares. Mix in a big bowl with 1 cup mayonnaise, ¼ cup mustard, 1 tsp lemon juice, 1 diced onion, 5 diced stalks of celery, salt & pepper (around $5). So, for a total of only 12 bucks, you have lunch for every day of the week.

I pre-portion the Chicken Salad into ziplock sandwich baggies and keep in the fridge, so they are ready to go for each day. Just use a small insulated lunch bag with a freezer pack, to keep the food fresh until lunch time. For a snack, I bring along a bag of baby carrots and ranch dressing. I work in an office, and this is a great lunch for Mon-Fri. Saves me bundles of money and is much healthier than eating fast food every day. If you want, you can take bread to put the salad on, but since I eat low-carb foods, I skip the bread.

What are some good take-lunch ideas that don't require refrigeration or microwaving?

DrowEthel

I need ideas for lunches I can take to work with me but they can't be any that require refrigeration or microwaving because there isn't a fridge (and I don't have an insulated lunchbox) or microwave at work.

Answer
I have a few thoughts for you. First, there is this great lunch system that makes packing lunches super easy and you can win one free on my site (simply comment on food items already there, or add your own item - it doesn't take long at all). It is called easylunchboxes.com - you could win a container set and an insulated bag. If you don't want to enter, or don't win, I'd suggest buying an insulated bag and a couple little ice packs. Then, for packing lunches ... visit http://www.lunchtaker.com for a lot of ideas. We have a blog section that gives suggestions for things as well. Everything on the site is on the easy side, nutrition is included for all items you can be aware of how you are eating etc. Also, especially as it gets colder out, consider buying a thermos so you can pop leftover soups and stews and such in your lunch. We have a blog post about pre-warming thermos products to make them hold heat better that I'd suggest before you use one.
Good luck with lunch! :) Amy

Lunch Cooler and containers?

mojo

I'm trying to get back in shape. I need to start taking my meals with me to work, I'm looking for some suggestions for a cooler I can use that will keep my food fresh all day. I'll need enough room for about 3 meals and 2 shakes. But, I don't want to look like a goober taking a huge ice chest to work. What are some good container solutions?

Answer
I have at home a Vodka Cruiser soft carry bag esky. It can fit 2 six packs of vodka cruiser bottles in it. They come in different colours (the esky's) and are insulated. You freeze the pocket inside the lid and zip on when you are ready to use. There is a handy strap that can go over your arm like a hand bag. I picked mine up from a novelty gift store and have seen them in quite a few of those stores.
Hope this at least gives you an idea!

How to keep my lunch fresh during the day?

Q. So I like to bring healthy lunches from home because the choices at my school are just...yeah...But most of the time my the lunches I try to bring like wraps and salads, end up squished or bad and gross looking by the time I go to eat them. The only thing that seems to hold up for my is Special K and PB&J and I'm really getting sick of those. So do you have any ideas on how to keep my lunches from spoiling?

P.S. Does anyone know of a thermos that actually works?

Answer
go to any department store in the kitchen gadget area and look for thermos containers.
You can find wide mouth ones that work for any hot or cold foods.
you can also get insulated bags to carry your lunch in.
Construction workers have been carrying lunch for many many years using these same things.
With a cold food thermos, store it in the freezer with the lid off.
In the morning, put your cold pasta or fruit salad in there and it will be icy cold yet at lunch time.
IN one of these you can take any of the following;
tuna or chicken salad for sandwiches
any pasta salad
any fruit salad
beverage
In a Thermos designed for how foods, you simply pour boiling water into the thermos to heat it while you are heating the food. then dump the water, put the hot food in and close. It will stay hot all day.
You can take
soups
stews
hot dishes
sliced meats and gravy
spaghetti and meatballs
what ever interesting left overs you had from last nights supper.

Want to go big grocery shopping soon not sure what i should get...?

Q. I would like to get a number of things for meals from the grocery store , my fiance and I are starting to hate that we have to repeat meals like spagettie, hamburger helper, hot dogs and grilled cheese those are all great but get old FAST , so a few things to get too last , use more then once and some recipes would be awesome

Answer
What do you like? Other then hamburger helper, spaghetti and hot dogs?

Your list should consist of plenty of fruits and vegetables. You can buy fresh cucumbers, canned corn & peas (or frozen), fresh baby carrots, celery, etc. Whichever vegetables you prefer. You should also buy a choice of fruits. We always have apples, bananas, and strawberries.

You should consider purchasing some Ramen noodles since they're so cheap and would be really helpful on night where neither your fiance or yourself would like to cook.

Canned food should be on the list. I mean, Tuna, Spam, and Canned Chicken. With the tuna, you can make tuna sandwiches, tuna salad, or make Tuna Helper (which would be a change instead of Hamburger helper). With spam, you can fry it and serve with eggs for breakfast, or you can have it on toast with ketchup for lunch. It goes well either way! And, with canned chicken, you can make chicken salad, or fry the chicken with some fried rice (I like to purchase Vittaroz yellow rice for only 99 cents which you can cook in a pot, all you need is water, and cook the canned chicken in a skillet seasoned with one packet sazon seasoning by Goya and when the rice is done, i add the chicken and it's like a perfect hispanic-style meal) or chicken sandwiches.

Also, what about steak? Most men do love steak and I can speak for all women that love steak when I say it's delicious! You should buy some top sirloin (you can season it with a steak marinade and some steak seasoning-i like McCormick, and then don't forget the A1 sauce) that you can fry in a skillet and along side of the steak you can have baked potatoes (which are inexpensive + you can make them in the microwave). And a veggie with that? Steam some fresh broccoli, heat up some canned corn, steam some fresh carrots, or heat up some baked beans, I mean whatever you like!

Ground Beef! There's more that you can do with ground beef other then helper and spaghetti! All you need to do is purchase a Taco Kit and it's cake from there! Just don't forget to buy some sour cream, lettuce, tomato, and shredded sharp cheddar cheese for the tacos! You can also do ground beef with beef gravy and elbow macaroni. Or, you can make sloppy joes. All you need is a can of Manwhich sloppy joe sauce.. they're quite delicious, and not really as sloppy as they sound!

Simple boxed meals would be boxed mashed potatoes, Pasta Sides (by Lipton) or Pasta-Roni (both brands are a dollar!)/Rice Sides or Rice-A-Roni, Macaroni & Cheese (and I prefer macaroni & shells).

I like Pasta.. so I buy different types like Rotini, Fettucine, Ziti, Elbows, Shells, etc and I buy Knorr Pasta Sauces (one packet is only a dollar) and they have so many kind! I love to make the pasta and sometimes I add cooked chicken or veggies like some corn or peas!

Soups! Buy Campbells Hearty soups. I love Sirloin Burger! My mom, on the other hand, prefers Italian Wedding soup.

Salad! You can purchase Dole salad in a bag.. just buy a dressing to go on top and other toppings (like shredded cheese & eggs, so you can hard boil them! and croutons), and you can even add chicken or ham chunks.

Minute Steak. We make our own cheese-steaks with minute steak. You can also cook it and have steak & gravy, with mashed potatoes.

Do you guys like Pork Chops? I love them. I cook them (in a skillet) and serve them with sweet baked beans and sweet potato fries (yeah, I buy the bag. Sometimes I make my own, but I like to buy the frozen bag because it's so much easier).

Also, there are tons of kits. I like the Shrimp Scampi kit!

Oh, and ... I like to buy Sam's Choice Fireside Gourmet Black Angus Burgers. It comes with 6 in a box and they can be microwaved. They are so delicious. I put them on a hamburger bun with ketchup, mayo, mustard, lettuce, onion, and a jewish pickle.

Also, you can spicen up some of your already used to meals.. like grilled cheese.. you can grill that sandwich with a slice of ham, tomato, or turkey breast. With the hotdogs, you can dice them, fry them, and serve with hashbrowns and ketchup. It's quite good.

I also like to have eggs handy because I make my own breakfast sandwhichs. I cook an egg with cheese and bacon bits (or chopped sausage-if it's already cooked and in the fridge) and put it on an onion bagel. It's sooo good.

What about B-L-T's? I love to cook some Oscar Mayer bacon till it is nice and crisp and serve on toasted wheat bread with mayo, lettuce, and tomato. You can also do bacon sandwhiches with ketchup on toast, or along side some eggs!

I make Pasta Salad frequently because the weather is nicer now. I use Rotini noodles, boil them till cooked, then drain and place them in a large mixing bowl. I add a can of stewed tomatoes, chopped onion, chopped scallions, and then a whole bottle of Zesty Italian dressing. Then I add McCormick salad seasoning and place in fridge...allow to cool and serve with burgers, hotdogs, and all that fun BBQ food.

You can make simple chicken parm. Just cook some boneless, skinless chicken breast, and then add some breading and sauce and cheese on top, and place in the oven until the sauce and cheese are cooked onto the breaded chicken and serve with a plate of fettucine noodles and prego pasta sauce.

I like chicken. So I buy chicken wings, drumsticks, chicken breast, etc. Sometimes I serve with spanish rice (arroz amarillo con gandules) or mashed potatoes and corn, it ultimately depends on my mood.

Ah, the list goes on.. but hope that I've helped!!

Pregnant women, do you ever have days where you seriously overeat....?

Lucky

.
I am generally a very careful eater but yesterday I gorged myself!! I ate fast food (which was gross) and then later I ate almost an entire bag of potato chips. Today I feel so bad about myself, physically and emotionally. My unborn child deserves better.

Has anyone else had a terrible eating day, and how do you make up for it?

Answer
I did the same thing yesterday. I had a panini for lunch, then my boss brought me a milkshake as an afternoon pick me up and then for dinner my husband brought home pizza and I had 4 slices!! I felt so bad when I work up this morning.

Today I'm making up for it by eating healthy foods that are not so calorie loaded and drinking EXTRA water to help re-hydrate my body from all the grease yesterday and maybe help flush out my system.

Today I had a ham & cheese breakfast sandwich and then I had a 100 calorie snack pack and pretty soon I will be going to lunch and will eat something light and healthy - like maybe a big bowl of hearty soup or a grilled chicken salad, etc.
For dinner I will make up some chicken with carrots and toss it over a pasta. Today so far I have already had a liter of water and will drink 1 more liter before the end of the day.

Then tomorrow I will wake up and feel balanced again.

That's how I make up for it.

Need help deciding what to bring for lunch to work.?

T-Man

Im short on options and also devices. I start work soon and I need help deciding what to eat for lunch. It has to last from the time i make it and the time i eat it. It needs to last roughly 4-5 Hours. I do not have a refrigerator and I only have a microwave available. The food will be kept in a locker for about 5 hours @ room temperature, slightly warmer though. My choices will be a thawed Banquet "TV Dinner", Cup of Noodle (Ramen), Fried Egg Sandwich, Ham Sandwich, and rice with asian style sausages. If you have other good ideas, it will be helpful. I don't want to go out and buy a bag of chips. If all those 5 options do not work, my last resort is to spend 5 dollars everyday on a 5 dollar subway.
Don't tell me to order pizza and heat up the pizza. Thats way to expensive to do and it takes up too much room in the fridge.
I'll be working at a Auto Shop...I wouldn't have room to bring a ice pack/cooler. It needs to be realllyyyy simple =X

Answer
My partner has a problem with outside food due to a very sensitive stomach so I prepare all his meals everyday in a tiffin box.

A good idea is to buy a 2/3 tier lunchbox or a compartmentalized lunch box with separate little boxes in the main lunch box so you can put different 'courses' through or separate certain ingredients which might make the rest of the food soggy (i.e salads, tomatoes in sandwiches, etc).

Example of a good insulated 2/3 tier lunch box:
http://cgi.ebay.com/Zojirushi-Classic-Bento-Vacuum-Insulated-Lunch-Jar-NIB_W0QQitemZ110463178372QQcmdZViewItemQQptZLH_DefaultDomain_0?hash=item19b81e5684

If you can get a good brand/type which is insulated so it keeps your food warm or cold, preventing any bacterial build up since you're talking about 4 - 5 hours.
If you prefer non insulated ones make sure they are microwaveable as not all of them are microwaveable, so double check before buying.

If you're going for a non-insulated, microwavable lunch box, its good to get one of the types which has a cold/ice/water bottle pack over the top to keep your food hygienically chilled, that way you prevent any bacterial build up over the hours.
You can then separate the water bottle/ice pack from the main food contents and microwave it to have a cool drink and a hot lunch.

Some good ideas:

- Buy a pack of frozen mixed veggies to use in stir-fries, pastas, instant noodles.
- Buy a packet of loose baby spinach or rocket to throw in sandwiches or other cook ups.
- Buy BBQ chicken at a discount and shred it, then freeze it in portions so you can use them easily in your food with meat.
- Buy basmati rice as they are long grain and when cooked the grains do not stick or become sticky, They are very good to keep for hours in a lunch box and heat up well without losing its freshness. All you need to do to 'refresh' the rice is to sprinkle a little cold water over the top and microwave for a min or two as its as good as freshly cooked.

Some Food ideas:

- Lemon mayo & baby spinach chicken/ham sandwiches:
Lemon mayo can be made by grating lemon rind and a small squeeze of lemon into normal mayo. Layer on bread, add baby spinach, tomato slices, bbq chicken shreds/ham and add salt and pepper. Flatten and slice diagonally.

- Cheesy rocket, avocado, red onion and chicken burritos:
Grated cheddar/or you can use sliced cheese, mashed avocado, sliced red onions, lettuce and chicken wrapped in a burrito. Very tasty and can omit any ingredients as per taste.

- Egg fried rice (Great with day old rice or leftover rice)
Beat egg with chilli powder, salt, pepper, pinch of 5 spice/cumin. Fry into omelette and break apart into pieces. Chop onions.
Fry onions till golden brown or slight browned, 3 tbsp water, 1/2 chicken stock cube, 1 tbsp soy sauce until it becomes a thickened sauce. Throw in frozen veggies, chopped bacon/chicken, egg pieces and stir fry for 5 min+.
Throw in 1 cup rice, stir fry on high heat until everything is well mixed.

- Mee Goreng
Cook noodles as normal, can be any flavour but of course if you use noodles such as Indo-Mee it will taste much better. Fry onions, add mixed veggies, pinch of tumeric (ok if none), 1 tbsp tomato paste, 1 - 2 tbsp water, stir fry well till veggies cooked.
Toss in noodles and mix well.

- Chinese Stir-fry of any ingredients + side of rice + side of soup
- Japanese bento style dish of Okonomiyaki chicken (chicken and egg on rice) using your bbq chicken, with a side of miso soup and a side of fruit like watermelon.
- Dips: Mexican Guacamole with dips, Greek dips with pita bread, Mid-Eastern dips such as eggplant dip, yoghurt and cucumber dip with pita bread.

You can have all these with sides of cut fruit, or perhaps some leftover muffin/dessert you had which couldn't finish or saved a portion of, a small salad for a complete, healthy meal.

Go check out some food sites for inspiration it will really help as well.

Many of them include pictures too.
Have fun experimenting! You'll save lots of money too.

We used to spend about $20 per person a day for lunch including coffees and snacks during coffee breaks, not including weekends.
After we started making our own lunches we actually became more creative and aware of the food we were putting into our bodies and craving good, wholesome foods instead of fast food and takeaway junk.
Savings = (($20 + $20)x 5) = $200 a week)x 4 = $800 a month saved.
Annual savings = $800 x 12 = $9600

Saved up enough for a few flat screen tvs and overseas trips. :)

What are these bags called?

Q. They're bags and purses that are like solid colored with brown leather straps. The most common color I always see people with is navy blue but I've seen other colored ones. I can't think of what they're called and it's bugging me! Does anyone know what I'm
talking about? Sorry i can't think of a lot ofinfo .Thanks

Answer
5 Handbag Styles:

Oversize tote

With room for everything from your laptop to your lipstick, an oversize tote is a fantastic bag for work. These style handbags feature a structured shape, large interior compartment and open top that make it easy to carry everything you need and access it quickly. While you wouldn't want to carry a large tote to meetings or a business lunch, it's easy to throw in a small clutch to grab and take with you.

Satchel

A satchel is a hand-held, structured handbag. While not as big as other handbags, a satchel is ideal if you don't need to carry a laptop, documents or files to and from work with you. It's the perfect size for all your personal items, and the structured design holds up well to daily use.

Hobo

Much like an oversize tote, a hobo bag has plenty of space, but without the structured shape. Hobo bags usually have a zipper or magnetic snap, making sure the contents of your handbag don't accidentally spill on your way to work. The telltale crescent shape of a hobo bag gives it a slouchy look that, while fashionable, may not be the best for carrying documents. The slouchy design does, however, hide the contents of your bag well, so go ahead and stock it full.

Cross-body/messenger bag

If you're carrying a laptop, files, books and other heavy items to and from work, you'll want your bag to be both sturdy and comfortable. A cross-body bag distributes the weight across your body, making it easier to carry around. Most cross-body and messenger bags have adjustable straps so you can customize one to your needs.

Briefcase style

The ultimate handbag for work is a briefcase-style bag. Meshing classic office style with the modern handbag, briefcase handbags have the basic structure of a briefcase without all the bulk. These feminine business bags have interiors built for carrying documents, files and laptops, as well as everything from lotions to lipstick.

London ladies - how many bags do you commute with on the tube?

lane

What's your solution to the problem of having to deal with gym kit, paperwork, makeup etc?

Especially when running shoes seem to have gargantuan soles.

I run around with three bags (gym bag, rucksack, plus handbag). Have been looking for a tote to deal with paperwork, which might accommodate personal stuff too, but the proportions always seem wrong in the ones I can find... (straps too long/short; pockets too deep/not in the right place...)

Answer
I carry two big bags. My handbag is a big satchel type and it holds everything from make-up to books and paperwork. Then I have a large tote that can hold gym clothes and shoes and my lunch. It's a hassle and it's been hard finding the perfect bags but I finally have a system that works. I also keep a small handbag at work that I can use when I go out to lunch and don't want to carry the big bag I use on the train. I've seen ladies with up to four bags though.

Vera Bradley Bag For School? Easy Ten Points?

Q. HellO! im looking at vera bradley tote bags for this school year. Im going to be a freshman in highschool, and i was wondering what type of bag do you think is best for carrying all my binders and books and such around ( obviously not all at once, lol (: ) so, i was looking at the vera bradley "vera" bag, do you think this is large enough? ive only bought one thing from vera bradley, and its just a tiny tiny purse for only like your phone haha. any color suggestions would be great too! thankyou!

Answer
I just got the vera for school and it is huge it will carry alot! I love it though, it is definately a great bag for school!! If you are not going to carry many textbooks the tote might be good for you, but I personally like to have extra room for things like a waterbottle and lunch if I need it so I would go with the vera!!
I actually recieved the tote as a gift for my graduation to use for school next year but when people started telling me it was too small I took it back to the vera bradley store and the ladies working there said most people get the vera or the pleated tote, but I personally liked the vera. They said the tote is good if you know that you will only have like one textbook at a time, but the vera can hold like 3 plus other books, so I would definately go with the vera! :)

Hope that helped :)

How long does an insulated bag work for?

Insulated lunch bags usually do not come with their own thermos, so you will have to use some you already have or buy them separately.

lunch ideas for college?

Q. at college i get so bored, i bring the sam old lunches: sandwiches, crisps, a drink, and a chocolate bar. Anyone got any ideas of stuff i could bring to eat at college?

Answer
I would carefully consider your containers and get some insulated pieces. They will help you expand your food choices to keep hot and cold foods safe and yummy. Get double the amount you would carry so that you can have one set in use, and keep one set at home getting cleaned and chilled. Make sure everything is easy to clean and get a baby bottle brush and some white vinegar to help you keep everything fresh. To keep things clean run a sink of hot soapy water, add 2 cups of white vinegar and let your items soak. Then scrub them clean, rinse, and let them air dry.

You can start with 4-6 reusable drink bottles. 2-3 drinks packed per day will keep you away from the vending machines and coffee shops, saving money and allow you to choose healthier options. Add to that 2 insulated soup thermos, and some reusable disposable plastic containers with lids, some zipper bags, and 2 flexible, reusable ice packs...and 2 insulated lunch totes that fit half your gear in each. You can also get a stash of handi-wipes. These are a washable/reusable very sturdy paper towels, meant for household cleaning, but they work great for this, pack damp in a zipper bag to wipe your face. They can be discarded after a few uses. And tuck in a small bottle of hand sanitizer, and some washable plastic silverware.

With better containers you can make use of leftovers, take hot soup or pasta, etc, even a slice of meatloaf or a hunk of roast and mashed potatoes.

As for typical lunch food choices, you can pack fresh veggies...if you like to dip, slice your peppers, scallions, celery, carrots, in sticks and stick them straight up in a container (cut your food to fit that container) that has dip or hummus in the bottom...pull each piece out to find it pre dipped.

If you prefer a salad you eat with a fork, pack some chunked up salad veggies, some chilled pasta, some bottled salad dressing (or herbs and olive oil). Then when you sit down to eat, add a packet of tuna, chicken, a string cheese, or pepperoni, and toss it all together...packing your salad in an oversized container will allow you to add and stir easily.

You could swap out the pasta in the above recipe for chilled barley, rice, lentils, potatoes...or swap out the dressing for chilled marinara sauce.

Instead of chips/crisps you can try pita chips, crackers. They also make veggie poofs that are similar to cheetos. I wonder if you are from UK do you have these or know what I mean. You can also pack plain tortilla chips (instead of the spray painted flavored kind) and carry your own fresh bean dip or salsa. These are healthier and you get better flavor and variety.

For different sandwich options, switch our your bread for bagel, pita, tortilla, flatbread, or skip the bread altogether and pack all your sandwich fillings as a salad.

For drink options, you can buy juice box type containers of lots of things: milk, yoo-hoo chocolate drink, or buy drinkable yogurt or smoothies. You can also use your reusable containers to prepare yourself an iced tea or coffee, a lemonade, or powdered drink.

For dessert...fresh fruits! Grapes, apples, oranges, bananas, pear, peach can all be packed whole...or you can cut and bowl up some berries, melon, kiwi, papaya, mango, pineapple, mandarin oranges.

Other dessert...you can use purchased snack cakes, homemade cookies, make cheesecake cups, make caramel popcorn, make marshmallow treats with cereal, make a chocolate ganache and stuff to dip in it.

You can also freeze certain things. You can freeze pudding cups, yogurt cups, jello cups, and applesauce cups. Pack them frozen, they are cold and refreshing when you sit down to eat. They will help keep everything else cold. You can freeze drink bottles if they aren't all the way full.

How long does an insulated bag work for?

Thanks.

Insulated lunch bags usually do not come with their own thermos, so you will have to use some you already have or buy them separately.

would this be a good-sized bag for high school?

theaB.

alrighty so i'm starting high school in a few months. this past year i've carried a tote bag as a backpack and although it was much better than a backpack, i found it hard to manage. i had to pack my lunch this past year and most days the tote wasn't big enough for carrying my lunch and my books. now that i'm going to be a freshman, though, i can carry smaller lunches (at my school we were required to bring snacks as well, all adding up to a large lunch bag) or maybe not even lunch at all, considering my high school has a cafeteria. i'll also have less subjects per term, so i've been looking at different styles of tote bags recently to see which would be the better "upgrade" from the one i had this year. abercrombie kids has just come out with their fall collection and a few new tote bags, and one caught my eye - http://www.abercrombiekids.ca/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/ProductDisplay?storeId=11307&catalogId=10851&productId=528819&langId=-1&categoryId=12148&parentCategoryId=12103&colorSequence=01

i was wondering if this would make a good choice - has anyone seen this bag in person and can tell me how big it is, or can anyone list the pros and cons of messenger bags? i feel like i could distribute the weight more easily across my body with the long strap, but i'm still not sure. yes i know it's expensive and yes i know it's abercrombie, frowned upon by some 'non-conformists' but what matters to me is that i like the bag, i just want to know if it's conventional or not. i would get it in navy, white gets too dirty too easily.

Answer
Ill be a sophmore. and i think tit's a good idea, but depending on your school the shoulder thing could be an inconvience, i just use an oversised bag and it works great. but ig you like the tote bag then go with that. i think i changed bags several times my fresheman year. your just going to have to try it out and if you decide you dont like it try a different kind.
