Need help deciding what to bring for lunch to work.?

T-Man

Im short on options and also devices. I start work soon and I need help deciding what to eat for lunch. It has to last from the time i make it and the time i eat it. It needs to last roughly 4-5 Hours. I do not have a refrigerator and I only have a microwave available. The food will be kept in a locker for about 5 hours @ room temperature, slightly warmer though. My choices will be a thawed Banquet "TV Dinner", Cup of Noodle (Ramen), Fried Egg Sandwich, Ham Sandwich, and rice with asian style sausages. If you have other good ideas, it will be helpful. I don't want to go out and buy a bag of chips. If all those 5 options do not work, my last resort is to spend 5 dollars everyday on a 5 dollar subway.
Don't tell me to order pizza and heat up the pizza. Thats way to expensive to do and it takes up too much room in the fridge.
I'll be working at a Auto Shop...I wouldn't have room to bring a ice pack/cooler. It needs to be realllyyyy simple =X

Answer
My partner has a problem with outside food due to a very sensitive stomach so I prepare all his meals everyday in a tiffin box.

A good idea is to buy a 2/3 tier lunchbox or a compartmentalized lunch box with separate little boxes in the main lunch box so you can put different 'courses' through or separate certain ingredients which might make the rest of the food soggy (i.e salads, tomatoes in sandwiches, etc).

Example of a good insulated 2/3 tier lunch box:
http://cgi.ebay.com/Zojirushi-Classic-Bento-Vacuum-Insulated-Lunch-Jar-NIB_W0QQitemZ110463178372QQcmdZViewItemQQptZLH_DefaultDomain_0?hash=item19b81e5684

If you can get a good brand/type which is insulated so it keeps your food warm or cold, preventing any bacterial build up since you're talking about 4 - 5 hours.
If you prefer non insulated ones make sure they are microwaveable as not all of them are microwaveable, so double check before buying.

If you're going for a non-insulated, microwavable lunch box, its good to get one of the types which has a cold/ice/water bottle pack over the top to keep your food hygienically chilled, that way you prevent any bacterial build up over the hours.
You can then separate the water bottle/ice pack from the main food contents and microwave it to have a cool drink and a hot lunch.

Some good ideas:

- Buy a pack of frozen mixed veggies to use in stir-fries, pastas, instant noodles.
- Buy a packet of loose baby spinach or rocket to throw in sandwiches or other cook ups.
- Buy BBQ chicken at a discount and shred it, then freeze it in portions so you can use them easily in your food with meat.
- Buy basmati rice as they are long grain and when cooked the grains do not stick or become sticky, They are very good to keep for hours in a lunch box and heat up well without losing its freshness. All you need to do to 'refresh' the rice is to sprinkle a little cold water over the top and microwave for a min or two as its as good as freshly cooked.

Some Food ideas:

- Lemon mayo & baby spinach chicken/ham sandwiches:
Lemon mayo can be made by grating lemon rind and a small squeeze of lemon into normal mayo. Layer on bread, add baby spinach, tomato slices, bbq chicken shreds/ham and add salt and pepper. Flatten and slice diagonally.

- Cheesy rocket, avocado, red onion and chicken burritos:
Grated cheddar/or you can use sliced cheese, mashed avocado, sliced red onions, lettuce and chicken wrapped in a burrito. Very tasty and can omit any ingredients as per taste.

- Egg fried rice (Great with day old rice or leftover rice)
Beat egg with chilli powder, salt, pepper, pinch of 5 spice/cumin. Fry into omelette and break apart into pieces. Chop onions.
Fry onions till golden brown or slight browned, 3 tbsp water, 1/2 chicken stock cube, 1 tbsp soy sauce until it becomes a thickened sauce. Throw in frozen veggies, chopped bacon/chicken, egg pieces and stir fry for 5 min+.
Throw in 1 cup rice, stir fry on high heat until everything is well mixed.

- Mee Goreng
Cook noodles as normal, can be any flavour but of course if you use noodles such as Indo-Mee it will taste much better. Fry onions, add mixed veggies, pinch of tumeric (ok if none), 1 tbsp tomato paste, 1 - 2 tbsp water, stir fry well till veggies cooked.
Toss in noodles and mix well.

- Chinese Stir-fry of any ingredients + side of rice + side of soup
- Japanese bento style dish of Okonomiyaki chicken (chicken and egg on rice) using your bbq chicken, with a side of miso soup and a side of fruit like watermelon.
- Dips: Mexican Guacamole with dips, Greek dips with pita bread, Mid-Eastern dips such as eggplant dip, yoghurt and cucumber dip with pita bread.

You can have all these with sides of cut fruit, or perhaps some leftover muffin/dessert you had which couldn't finish or saved a portion of, a small salad for a complete, healthy meal.

Go check out some food sites for inspiration it will really help as well.

Many of them include pictures too.
Have fun experimenting! You'll save lots of money too.

We used to spend about $20 per person a day for lunch including coffees and snacks during coffee breaks, not including weekends.
After we started making our own lunches we actually became more creative and aware of the food we were putting into our bodies and craving good, wholesome foods instead of fast food and takeaway junk.
Savings = (($20 + $20)x 5) = $200 a week)x 4 = $800 a month saved.
Annual savings = $800 x 12 = $9600

Saved up enough for a few flat screen tvs and overseas trips. :)

gift ideas please?

nlovelovin

It is going to be my boyfriends 18th birthday next month. i dont want to give him some cliche' gift. please give me ideas. or personal stories
I thought of a hot air baloon ride but its too expansive.

Answer
I'm a person who loves to give practical gifts...and lots of 'em. What does he like? What does he need?

My boyfriend's birthday is actually coming up in 4 days. He is into weight lifting and running, likes funny stuff, and needs a watch. So, I got him a watch, a gift card to Foot Locker for running shoes, an insulated lunch box (he currently just uses a plastic bag) that I filled with healthy snack bars, energy shots, and sleeveless t-shirts (he likes to run and lift in them). He and I watched a Beavis and Butthead DVD his friend had, but we only saw the one and don't have it anymore, so I got him all three seasons of it on DVD. He likes Michigan State and drinking (we're of age, don't worry), so I got him a Michigan State beer glass that freezes when you put it in the freezer. And since every man is really a little boy at heart, I got him those cheese and pretzel snack packs, pixie stix, and some silly straws to drink some alcoholic drinks with.

For the party, I'm going to get him his favorite DQ blizzard in cake form, but I'm going to do the illustration on it based on a joke he made while we happened to see Ninja Turtles on TV while flipping through channels. I'm also going to make his favorite dish, and make my signature drink!

That's a lot of stuff, but even some kind of small gift package you can make by throwing a few of his favorite things into a box will work. When we first started dating, he got me a Christmas stocking with a card and filled it with protein bars (I'm into weight lifting, too).

Lunch ideas for mothers day out?

mommy2ange

My 21 month old is the starting mothers day out program at our church 2 half days per week. She is there during lunchtime so I will need to pack her a lunch. The program is pretty strict on what the kids can and can't bring. The rules are:
1. The lunch must be packed in a 3 section divided dish. No lunch boxes or lunch bags or thermoses. (so that means no ice packs to keep food cold)
2. The food must not require refrigeration or heating
3. The food must be finger foods that the child can eat independently
4. No grapes even if they are sliced and peeled
5. peanut butter is allowed since no one in her class is allergic
6. No junk food (cake, candy, cookies, etc.)

Other than PBJ what on earth am I supposed to send her? Obviously meat, eggs, and pasta salads made with mayo are out. She will not eat raw veggies or apples, but other than that she is not picky. Please give me some healthy ideas!

Answer
well that's tricky. i had to deal with packing lunches like that too. Maybe you should try granola some kids like that. i know you said she doesn't like raw apples but what about apple sauce? probably not but you dont need to keep that cold. try lots of dry foods with grains so they are healthy for example triscuits and other crackers like the butterfly ones. its hard because most kid food need both cooling and heating. you possibly get away with gogert if you freeze it so it says cold by its self while thawing depending on how long its out. hope i helped a tad and good luck!

Answer
Ew. Sorry, there's no way I would willingly get in the car and drive there just to eat lunch. (o_O)

I'd brown bag it, or rather Wonder Woman it, since I still have an old tin WW lunch box. ^_^

::rofl:: @ "Pizza (Rectangle)"!! I have no idea why that strikes me as so hilarious, but it does. I think it's the unspoken realization of how nasty the pizza is, stated only by the fact that it's a rectangle. ::lol::

Whats The Best Way To Keep My Food & Drink Secure At Work?

Ashley B

So here's the deal....I came into work this morning to find that my coffee and 10 packets of my crisps were nicked as well as other things i bring in.

Ive only got a small desk but I need something to keep everything I have in secure.

PLEASE HELP!

Answer
Get yourself a lunch bag that is insulated, microwave containers and a thermos so that you can bring either hot or cold foods/drinks as you please, and only bring what you are going to eat and drink for that day. There are dozens and dozens of varieties of bags ao you should be able to find one that suits you, and that way you won't be spending out on food for everyone else to eat. also, get yourself 'singles' packets of coffee, whitener and sweetener and keep them all in a plastic ziplock in your purse so that when you want coffee you only need the hot water. You could also put a little sign up on the front of your desk telling your co-workers that the grocery store is now closed.

How long does an insulated bag work for?

~ <3 ~

I'm going to be at college for 12hrs, plus another 2hrs driving time.

If I were to keep some food in an insulated bag, APPROXIMATELY (to your best knowledge) how many hours max would it stay fresh for if:

-the food was reallly hot or frozen?
-it was just sorta cold?

Thanks.

Answer
I found this for you. Hope it helps!

Lunch Bags & Boxes
The first thing you will need is a container in which to pack the lunch. It doesn't need to cost a lot of money. For adults a small cooler makes a great lunch box. Fred uses a medium sized cooler. He is usually gone for 24 to 48 hours, so he needs alot of food to keep him going. For children and teenagers, you can usually find inexpensive lunch boxes and insulated lunch bags at yard sales and thrift stores.

Small children often prefer a plastic lunch box with cartoon characters on the side. I suggest you buy these as cheaply as possible. They only last for a year or two before the children drop them or the latch breaks. At $6 to $10 a piece, buying brand new boxes has never been a good investment for me. I have purchased them new when I desperately needed the thermoses that came with them. After the plastic lunch box broke, I purchased replacements from my local Goodwill. I continue to use the same thermos year after year.

If the art work on an older lunch box is shabby, you can easily replace it. Use rubber cement to glue down a new picture (cut to size) and then cover the picture with clear contact paper. I've done this, and it lasted almost 2 years, until the lunch box cracked and became unusable. Amy D. describes the process in detail in the first book of The Tightwad Gazette.

For older children insulated lunch bags work best. They don't have the juvenile connotations of plastic boxes with matching thermoses, so older kids usually don't object to carrying them. I like them because they don't break when they get drop-kicked across the livingroom by a budding football player. Since they have soft sides, it is easier to fit more food and odd-shaped containers in them too. They usually have zipper closing and shoulder straps for carrying them. I buy the largest ones I can find because I find them easier to fill. Many modern insulated bags have several extra zipper pockets and sections on the outside to carry little extras like napkins, spoons and salt or pepper packets. My boys like these but they aren't really necessary. Purchased brand-new, insulated lunch bags cost between $5 and $15. If you wait until back-to-school-sales you may find them cheaper. Over the summer they can often be found at yard sales. Insulated lunch bags usually do not come with their own thermos, so you will have to use some you already have or buy them separately.

Where can I find a stylish solid black lunch bag?

I saw some lunch bags at Target today but they are from igloo and look too cheap. They are not solid colors and have the igloo logo written plain and clear in the front. Also the strap is basically just sewed unto the bag, showing a clear seperation of both. I saw a guy with a nice solid black one the other day where the the bag tapers off into the straps at each end...(don't know how to explain this affect)

Answer
If you bring any lunch bag you automatically look like you had it packed by your mommy. Asking this question is like asking "where can I get a cool fanny pack?"

Fashionable lunch box?

Keep on Tr

Does anyone have any ideas on where I can find a fashionable lunch box? We used to have a kitchen with refrigerator at work but recently that room was converted to an office. Now, unless I want to pay to eat lunch out everyday, I need to start packing a lunch box for work. Any ideas on a fashionable lunch box, or some sort of other option? I need something that can remain cool, and I hate those neon green plastic-y lunch bags.

Answer
There are lots of stylish japanese obento lunch boxes. this is an example:

and for something more traditional yet equally stylish:

There are also quite a few for sale on ebay and most come with thermal bags to put the box in:

Are there any alternatives to having a screw top bottle.?

WWE Foreve

I recently went to my school and they said that screw top bottles are not allowed. Which most of thermos and bottles have screw tops. Does anyone have any ideas of what I should use instead of screw top bottles. I really like to keep foods hot and drinks cold. I would like it if someone could find bottles or thermoses without screw tops. I would really appreciate that!
Thanks!

Answer
That limits the options quite a bit. Some models I can suggest are:

For FOOD:

Option 1: Zojirushi type thermos bento lunch jars.

http://www.zappos.com/zojirushi-classic-bento-vacuum-lunch-jar-ultra-black?channel=126&si7757425=&mr:referralID=NA&mr:trackingCode=138A9AB8-71EE-DF11-8F9A-001B2163195C

The top 2 inner containers have plastic lids but the bottom one has a screw lid. The screw lid is the smallest container so you may be able to do without.

-- edit: I just realised the middle, large one is also a screw top (only a quarter turn). But you can still look through their range to find a non-screw top combination. --end edit

It does keep food warm/hot but you need to prep them first (putting very hot water in, then removing them before putting your foods that you want to keep hot).

The outer container is double-walled. All these items come in an insulated bag with eating implements (which vary depending on the model you buy). There are different configurations, colors and sizes that you can choose from.

I have two of these (similar to those in the above website but with gold-colored bags) and they do keep food reasonably warm/hot. Zojirushi often change the color scheme and bag designs.

Other versions (targeted at girls/women):
http://www.casa.com/p/zojirushi-mini-bento-stainless-lunch-jar-white-273582

Option 2: Heated thermos (Fuloon thermos lunch jar)

This has a power supply to warm your food at work/school (if you have access to power). I do not have this, so cannot give you an evaluation. It does look very useful though.

http://www.amazon.co.uk/Fuloon-Stainless-Thermal-Layers-Design/dp/B007PN2Z9E/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1342339770&sr=8-1

For WATER/DRINKS (non-fizzy):

If you only want them cold, you can get Tupperware tumblers called Handoliers or Thirstbreak Tumblers with plastic lids like this:

http://www.amazon.com/s/ref=nb_sb_noss?url=search-alias%3Dgarden&field-keywords=handolier

http://www.amazon.com/Set-Tupperware-Tumblers-Seals-Colors/dp/B004FDDVZE/ref=sr_1_23?s=home-garden&ie=UTF8&qid=1342341109&sr=1-23&keywords=tumblers++tupperware

You really need insulation through the use of an insulation bag: keeps the cold and condensation droplets in.

You can also add reuseable ice to your tumbler; these do not dilute your drink and is ... reuseable.

Other accessories: ice pucks.

Recommend an electric razor?

Miranda

I am a woman and I would like to purchase an electric razor that gives me a close shave. I would like it to be easy to hold ( i have small hands). It's also important that it can shave longer hair with ease.
What razor would you recommend?
Also, how often do you have to replace parts? Doesn't your razor get dull after many uses?

Answer
I have tried a few different electric razors and my favorite is the Panasonic ES2207P Close Curves Rechargeable Wet/Dry Ladies Shaver. I only paid about $20 online and I prefer this over using the razors. This electric shaver is really easy to use, I can use it in the shower or right after, I can wet it and clean it well, it contours nicely to my body, and gives me a comfortable clean shave. Best of all is the price! For the quality of this razor, $20 is really nothing (what I would spend on a couple of lunches). This is my go-to for those lazy days when I'm in a rush or donât feel like epilating.

http://www.amazon.com/Panasonic-ES2207P-Curves-rechargeable-Ladies/dp/B0018A32XS/?ie=UTF8&tag=a814jd0717-20&linkCode=ur2&camp=1789&creative=9325

If you have never tried epilating, I would highly recommend it. I was hesitant at first but if you want to thin the hair (I had very coarse armpit and leg hair and now it's thin like back in the day when I began shaving) and if you want to look hairless for longer (especially the underarm area), then you really need to get an epilator. I epilate EVERYWHERE (it only hurts the first couple of times and then it feels kind of good) and I love how long I stay hairless cause Iâm really lazy lol

I started with the Emoji Soft Caress Cordless epilator and fell in love with it. It comes with a small kit - brush, loofah, travel bag, and charger. I use a cheap toothbrush to clean it since the one I bought is not the wet/dry one but I like this one because it's small and conturs perfectly everywhere. Once in a while I soak a qtip in rubbing alcohol to sanitize it. Best of all, my bikini area stays clear (no ugly bumps) while I go on vacation, you just need to exfoliate to make sure you don't get ingrowns... Best hair removal investment I've made, hands down.

http://www.amazon.com/Emjoi-Soft-Caress-Cordless-Remover/dp/B001EAYZEW/?ie=UTF8&tag=a814jd0717-20&linkCode=ur2&camp=1789&creative=9325

Anyway, check out both, the electric razor and epilator, since they are both great options.

Middle School lunch??

jrgsmadiso

in middle school, i dont know what i should do about lunch. i dont know if i should take a luchbox, it might be a hassle, a paper sack, or just buy it. tell me what you would do please.

Answer
I always hated carrying anything outa the lunch room with me, especially since once i got to high school i didn't always go to my locker right after lunch. If I brought my lunch i used a paper bag, in both middle and h.s people still brought lunch boxes too. If I liked what was for lunch, I bought. My school had pizza, salads, wraps, and subs everyday, so i did end up buying a lot. Some schools are way overpriced with lunches though. I would say buy lunch on days you like something they have/want to buy, bring if you don't and the lunch box thing will depend on if you go to your locker right b4 and after lunch , or if ur willing to carry it around. In my school most guys bought , i guess they didnt think it was cool to bring a lunch, and the girls were pretty well split b/w bringing and buying. Good luck in middle school, its way better than gradeschool!

What looks more professional - A (womens) satchel or tote bag?

Lina

Im debating whether I should go for

a black satchel bag: http://www.friendsforleather.co.uk/media/catalog/product/cache/1/image/1000x1000/9df78eab33525d08d6e5fb8d27136e95/8/5/85_black.jpg
or a black tote bag: http://www.cheappradaoutletonline.com/images/abc-classic-prada-black-tote-bags.jpg
(talking only about the style, not the brand)

Its for everyday wear. I prefer to dress professional (business casual like slacks, ballet flats, button down shirt and blazer. Im 24 yrs old student but I jyst prefer to dress this way to campus and everyday wear) and wonder which one would be most formal?

Answer
At my school, we have to follow a business casual dress code! I think they both look nice, but I would choose the black tote. You could fit more things, such as a scarf, flats, lunch, books, pens, tablet, etc.--all while looking polished, stylish, and professional. I bring a tote bag and a lot of girls in my class do, too. (The popular bag of choice has been the Longchamp tote, but I don't really see anything special about it!) Either bag will look professional.

Kid friendly sandwich lunches?

Paper Wing

What are some simple lunchbox sandwich lunches I can do for kids besides pb&j, grilled cheese, and ham&cheese that does require a lot of time in the morning? (or I can set up the night before :) )

Thank you!

Answer
Cut some cheese so it resembles a stick of butter and cut slices. Bag them in ziploc and do one in crackers. Then cut slived ham with a biscuit cutter and bag it too. Put the 3 bags in a paper bag and put it in the frig for in the morning. Paper lunch bags can be bought as a bunch in plastic in stores.

Good outdoor kids games?

Chrissy

During the summer we get the kids together in the neighborhood and "teach" them the games we played as kids. You can imagine my surprise when none of them had even heard of RED ROVER! So I need a list of outdoor games, so far I've got:
potato sack races
3 legged races
egg toss
egg race
simon says
Red light, yellow light, green light go.

Any other suggestions would be greatly appreciated!

These easy outdoor games are competitive, so they are just right when you have favors and prizes to award. They work at family picnics, birthday parties, and other outdoor group events. The best part is you can set them up at a cost of next to nothing!

1. Balloon Stomp
Supplies Needed: Balloons, string
Let the kids blow up their own balloons and tie one to their ankle with string. At the 'Go' signal, everyone runs around trying to stomp on and bust each others balloons. The last person with an intact balloon wins.

2. Jump Rope Relay
Supplies Needed: two jump ropes
Form two teams and set the boundaries of the race. At the 'Go' signal, the first two players race to the goal and back, jumping rope. The next player goes, and so on, until the winning team is declared.

3. Hot Potato
Supplies Needed: boom box; bean bag or at your outdoor picnic, use a real potato!
Players stand in a circle, and a parent or teen starts the music. Players pass the potato around the circle until the music stops. Whoever is holding the potato when the music stops is out. Play continues until one winner is declared.

4. Hula Hoop Contest
Supplies Needed: Hula hoop for each child
Great for a small group of children. Play music to make it more fun. At the 'Go' signal, players begin 'hula hooping' as long as they can. If the hula hoop drops or players touch it with their hands, they're out!

5. Outdoor Scavenger Hunt
Supplies Needed: printed list of nature items for the hunt; a location where nature items such as rocks, bugs, leaves, etc. can be gathered
Give players or teams the printed list of nature items to find. Some suggestions are rock, leaf, bug, pine cone, twig, something red, yellow, orange, or other color. The first player or team to report back with all of their items wins the prize.

6. Water Balloon Toss
Supplies Needed: balloons filled with water
Divide group into teams of two players and give each team a water balloon. Line the teams up an equal distance apart. Players toss the balloon to their partner; and, then, everyone steps back one step. Keep tossing the water balloon and taking a step back, until one team is left with an intact water balloon.

7. Freeze Dance
Supplies Needed: boom box
Play some wild music and let all the kids dance. When you stop the music, everyone freezes. Any movement, and you're out. Award the prize to the last dancer standing, or to the best dancer.

8. Bingo
Supplies Needed: Bingo set and lots of prizes
Cool down at the picnic table with Bingo. Adults and kids love to play, so you can use it during lulls before or after lunch, or when it just gets too hot to run around.

good diaper bag for multiple kids?

Jo

I am pregnant with number three and due in a couple of weeks. I am in need of a diaper bag thats large enough to carry things for 3 kids under 5 yrs of age. Durable, stylish and as I said large.
I am looking to spend NO MORE than 75 dollars on it.
If you have ANY suggestions please let me know! Thanks!

Answer
When I had two in diapers I didn't get a diaper bag at all. I got a Satchel bag the kind ppl carry computers in. It was rectangular and fit the diaper and bottle carrying bag easily it also had several pockets for all my mommy needs. It had an adjustable strap so i could wear it on my shoulder so i could hold the car seat in one hand and my toddlers hand. It was cheaper then any large diaper bag I could find about 25 bucks at target and more adult/ stylish. I used it as my purse and baby bag so when I wasn't with the kids I didn't look like I was carrying around a child's bag. It also was very easy to wash. Also i used a generic insulated lunch sack for bottles that was about $4.00 rather then the very over priced bottle carries. Good luck and congrats.

What to use instead of lunch box?

Jac

I am new to being vegan and need some help. What should i use instead of a lunch box or paper bag? I really want something reuseable but not a lunch box. Its not that i am embarrased to carry a lunchbox i just dont like how they look. At my school we are seated side by side so there is no room for a giant tray thing.Oh and please dont leave answers telling me about your hello kitty lunch box, thanks.

Answer
I'd recommend getting a neoprene lunchbox/bag. I put a link to a basic style, but you can find these almost anywhere now. They are well insulated, so they keep your food cold or warm, they're easy to carry, and they stretch, so you can hold quite a bit in there. And a lot of them even look like purses, so they're super stylish, and they come in MANY styles. The link I left below is a basic guide to the fabric & price. ENJOY :D

Answer
How about The Ugly Turkey (a short play)

SETUP

This play can be shortened or lengthened to suit the needs and skill levels of the children participating. Props can be simple puppets made from lunch bags or more complex marionettes. Use a large cardboard box for the backdrop. Paint, or draw with crayons, rolling hills, trees, a farm house and fence.

SCRIPT

Narrator: There were once five turkeys, all born on the same day, but one turkey was not quite like the others.

Turkey #1: "Isn't it a beautiful morning? It is GREAT to be a Turkey today!"

Turkey #2: (Strutting around) "I am so proud to be a Turkey, don't you think we are beautiful?"

Turkey #3: "I think we are the most handsome creatures on earth!"

Turkey #4: "The four of us are definitely gorgeous to behold, but what happened to you (speaking to the Ugly Turkey)? You do not look like the rest of us, you are not as beautiful as we are."

The Ugly Turkey: "It is true I do not look like you, but won't you be my friend anyway? Are looks all that is important? I am a good friend, a good listener, and I would help any of you if you were in need."

Turkey #1: "Honestly, I don't think I want to be friends with someone who is so different from myself."

Turkey #2: "Yeah, you aren't cool like the rest of us."

Turkey #3: "We don't want to play with you."

Turkey #4: "Go away."

The Ugly Turkey: "I am sad that you will not be my friend. I will go away, surely there is someone who will like me for who I am and not what I look like."

Narrator: So The Ugly Turkey turned and walked away. He wandered over the hill and through the trees and the four Turkeys thought nothing of it. As time passed the four Turkeys grew bigger and fatter! They grew and grew until they were so round they could hardly walk. They were not quite so cute as they were when they were little. When the farmers grandchildren came to visit they would stop to look at the horses, the cows, the puppies and kittens. They would giggle as the ducks waddled by and squeal with delight as the sheep scampered over the hills, but when they saw the Turkeys they just kept walking, some even looked a bit scared. Then one day a strange animal showed up on the farm.

Turkey #1: "Who's that strange bird over there on the hill, does anyone know?"

Turkey #2: "He's beautiful isn't he? Look at his tail feathers, they're rich in color and intricately patterned."

Turkey #3: "Did you see the plume atop his head, like a crown of glory? He stands tall and perfectly trim."

Turkey #4: "Do you think he will want to be our friend, we are not near so grand as he is?"

Turkey #2: "Let's go introduce ourselves and see if he will join us."

Narrator: As the four Turkeys approached the beautiful bird on the hill they noticed that the bird looked familiar.

Turkey #1: "Hello. We were wondering if you would like to join us? You are so beautiful we would be honored to have you for a friend."

The Ugly Turkey: "Do I not look familiar to you? Once I tried to be your friend but you all rejected me saying I was ugly and different."

Turkey #3: "I remember. That was so long ago. You are definitely not ugly now! You are the most magnificent bird on this farm."

Turkey #4: (With head hung low) "If you do not want to be our friend we understand, we are not nearly so grand as we thought we once were."

(The four Turkeys turn to walk away)

Turkey #5: "We do not want to embarrass you, we will go away."

The Ugly Turkey: "Please don't go. Have you not learned anything while I was away? It is not what you look like on the outside that matters but what you are on the inside that is important. I would be happy to be your friend."

Narrator: So the four Turkeys and the Peacock took a stroll over the hill and through the trees. They were often all seen together strolling about. When the farmers grandchildren would visit they would often stop by the five birds, talking excitedly. The four Turkeys knew that that the children were looking at the beautiful Peacock, but it didn't matter. It didn't matter because they were all friends and they were all equal.

(All participants say, "THE END" in unison and take a bow)

Has your vet ever misdiagnosed your horse?

Q. A few days ago I asked this...
http://answers.yahoo.com/question/index;_ylt=AiZUphofI61Zk_7rgIPqbuHsy6IX;_ylv=3?qid=20111018091642AAku9f6

Just want to say first off, my vet and my farrier are good friends and often work together on lameness cases.

Alright, so yesterday my vet called me and asked me to bring my mare back in for a second set of x-rays. My farrier had called her and told her what he thought, just for back up she wanted a second set of x-rays. (At no cost to me.)

Turns out, the second set of x-rays showed NO evidence of navicular syndrome. She thinks there was either a glitch in the original or the scans got switched with another horse.
So it turns out, though my farrier really had no credentials to diagnose a shoulder muscle strain (which my vet agreed with) he was right all along. And the original stumbling issue was due to her needing chiropractic work.
After 3 days of stall rest and 1 gram of bute twice a day for the first two days... my mare is sound and good as new.

So, my LQ is, have you ever received a misdiagnosis from your vet?
Oh I'm not bashing on my vet at all and I thank her and my farrier for being willing to work together to figure it out. I'm just asking whether it has happened to others.
@Barefoot: Eight? Jebus... what was the final diagnosis? Sounds like what I personally went through with my own health. Took 6 different MDs and specialists to figure out what these lesions were I used to get on my hands. Turns out... I'm fvcking allergic to gluten. Yeah, it took 6 doctors to figure out I have a very common allergy.
@Gallop, the chiropractic work did not relieve the shoulder pain. It stopped my mare's stumbling issue that caused her to fall in the first place. The shoulder pain was caused by the fall, where my mare stuck her leg out to catch herself, and her leg slid out from under her and she nose dived.

She was on three days rest, two days bute. Last day was bute free.

I understand and completely appreciate what you are saying. But my vet has now confided in me that there is NO navicular issue whatsoever, and she confirmed that the lameness was due to a muscle strain from the fall, and that the fall was due to "out of whack" vertebrae near the withers.

Answer
YES!

I will explain first that I live in a rural area and do not have many vets near me. Often we are stuck with student vets. I am not always able to get hold of the practice owner, he is the only "real" horse vet around.

Although we have a new young female vet that actually rides horses and competes in jumping/dressage. So although she admits to looking things up and not knowing everything, she is more horse inclined and willing to work with me.

Story - I found a pony mare (she had a 2 month old foal at foot) looking "off" and possible a puncture mark on her muzzle area.

I called the vet immediately as I suspected snake bite (in Australia our snakes are deadly to horses) it was early January and hot (our summer).

I told them I thought it was snake bite, but I was not sure if I needed Brown or Tiger snake anti venom as I had not seen the snake. The "all purpose" anti venom is very expensive (worth more than the horse value) but I asked them to bring it any way.

On arrival the vet examined the mare and told me she thought it was calcium deficiency because the mare had a foal at foot. I told her flat out I thought she was wrong.

She was insistent that she was right. I am not a vet so I asked her what the treatment was and how long it would take to work. She explained it would just be a intravenous line and we would have signs of improvement in 30 minutes.

I said "ok do that, but if it has not worked I want the anti venom given". To which she agreed.

She put the line in the mares neck and administered the bag. However she lost the cap off the end of the line and when the bag was removed the mare was spewing blood everywhere. The vet panicked and pulled the line out of the mares vein completely.

We sat and waited and the poor mare became more staggery. The foal was trying to suckle and I had to remove it from the yard to prevent it accessing poison milk (distressing to both).

The vet went and phoned other vets (of course this was a Saturday afternoon and she was the only one around). I was by this time demanding that she give the mare the anti venom.

She finally agreed her treatment was not working and went to find the mares vein..... she could not get a line in, the mares veins were collapsing! She tried the head, under her belly, the leg you name it.

Now I had a poor mare staggering, kids crying, visitors from the city helping us hold this poor mare up while the vet continued to try and work on her. The city people took their children into our house, the sun was now setting (she arrived at 1pm) and a storm was rolling in.

By this time I was furious! She kept making more phone calls. By this time the mare was reaching no return and the vet could not even put her down for me, as she could not get a vein!!!

I told her to get off the property and a few other things ;-( As the storm rolled in my husband and I managed to somehow get her to stagger into the stables. I gave her high doses of home remedies, which is what I should have done in the first place and I managed to get her through the night. By morning she ate a small amount and had a small drink, I felt she might make it.

By lunch time she had deteriorated again and I had to get my husband to shoot her. I was absolutely furious this vet had not only misdiagnosed my horse, but failed to listen to her client.

I know they are not gods, but common sense seems to lack sometimes.

Glad your horse is going to be ok. My new young vet worked in well with my farrier on a foundered pony I had last year, made my life much better! I use chiro and physio, they certainly have a place in horse care and my care..lol ;-)

Oh and the foal was fine, I pair her up with my TB gelding and he cared for her beautifully. I literally had to "wean" her off him when she was a yearling..lol I still have her and have now broken her in for my girls to ride, she is 5yo ;-)

Does anyone know any witty sayings to put on a woman's purse?

amazoncrus

We are having a funraiser for women. I made a cigar box purse with our "mascot" for a silent auction. The theme is "Have lunch with an Old Bag". The mascot is a character called Dottie. She is whimsical and is holding 3 handbags. Now I need a saying to put on it.

Answer
Woman will always be dependent until she holds a purse of her own.
Quote by: Elizabeth Cady Stanton (1815-1902)

Every woman should have a purse of her own

And if a woman's purse is a reflection of her personality, as is often argued, then why do so many women have the same purse?

Why do I suddenly feel lightheaded when I don't eat..?

Stephanie

If I don't eat in school I will collapse or I will feel extremely lightheaded. This never happened to me. I used to go hours without eating. I once fell right on my face in the nurse. Everything fell out of my bag. I just remember my eyes rolling back. Lol. This morning I almost passed out in the lunchroom. I had to hold on to a chair. I tilted over in Chemistry last month because I skipped lunch. Even when I eat I still feel lightheaded but it's not as bad. When I'm in school the floor is always swaying. I sometimes just wanna cry. Everyone is having fun while I'm trying to stay in my chair. What's going on? I'm also sleepy during the day. I just wanna sleep. I just yawn in class and try to stay awake. I have sleep apnea and I'm anemic.
