my house is clean but there is so much clutter. i have two kids with toys all over and my counters are constantly filling up with crap i dont know what to do with i put it in a pile to go through then it just sits there. i have tried buying big tubs for stuff but my garage is out of control as well. i need some advice for getting organized and keeping clutter out of the house. any advice would be grately appriciated.

Answer
Fly Lady.net

Fly Lady claims you cannot organize clutter, you can only get rid of it.
Do your kids take naps or go to school? If so, and you can be home when they are not, start then. Pick a spot other than the garage,
get a trash bag, 3 boxes and a laundry basket. If you have a timer, that's great. Set it for 15 minutes.

Now put all clothes in the laundry basket and all obvious trash
in the trash can. Look around the room. Pick a spot and work
clockwise around the room from that spot. Put anything you don't want anymore in the trash bag, put things you want to keep in one box,
things you don't want but are good for someone else in the second box, and any papers you don't want to deal with right now in the third box. When the timer goes off, take the trash out, take the laundry to where ever you put dirty clothes, and take break to grab a cup of coffee. Re set the timer, and go at it again. Continue until the room is done.

What to do with papers? If they belong to your kids and you want to save them, get a box, label one fo reach kid and put the age of the child on the box or the year. File works, too, if you have a filing cabinet. If they are yours, get a basket with a lid and put them in there. If they are bills, put them in your special bill paying spot.
( if you don't have one, figure out where it will be as you need one!)
Deal with papers when you have time.

When my kids were little we picked up toys before lunch, before dinner and before bed time. Made the job so much easier at bed time!

When my 2 oldest were in school and the lil one wasn't even in preK, I took her to a sitter one day a week so I could clean my house. The sitter was cheaper than a cleaning service.

Hope that helps; good luck!

What should I get my mom and dad for Christmas?

Q. My mom and dad have always gotten me really nice Christmas present so now I want to get them something really nice! I was thinking of getting my mom something from a coach outlet website that has really good deals so do you know of one that has good deals? And its hard to get something for my dad because he has like no hobbies!

Answer
How about any of these to think about. You don't have to any get of them as a gift, but it might give you ideas or something comes to mind. By the way all the lady and guy stuff are mix in there.

how to lose some weight and eat healthy at work..?

i work 16 hour shifts 3 days a week (im a nurse).i need to lose at least 20 lbs.obviously, when i get home from work those 3 days all i can do is shower and sleep and repeat.i also need suggestions on what I can take to work with me as i often dont get to leave during the shift.so sometimes i end up ordering food for delivery..any suggestions?
im probably not wanting a "pill" or a "drink" i buy off the net :)

Answer
Healthy, portable meals: that's the trick. You can learn about healthy
eating, and this is a life-long process, but it's more difficult to put all
that knowledge to work for you when your work is so rigorous. People
with 2 jobs have the same problem, and most of them don't have a
dietitian as a spouse. And I have listened to some dietitians whose
advice I disagree with.

Try this: Prepare a large batch of really good stew or soup or veggies
one day. (This works for single people, too). Have some of it right
away while it is still warm and yummy. Now get some of those little
fridge boxes with lids, and put away as many portions as you want
into your freezer, and leave a couple in the fridge to take for lunch or
have at tomorrow's supper.

You can't find out all the ingredients in restaurant-prepared food; usually
they can't figure it out, either. There's margarine/ trans-fat/ partially hydro-
genated oil; MSG; textured veg. protein; corn syrup; white vinegar. Then
there are a few other ingredients you might choose to eliminate from your
diet, either because they give you gas (nobody ELSE has this trouble,
you may think) or perhaps you have learned some new trick.

Get an insulated lunch bag/box, and buy a couple of those blue ice
blocks. They come in several sizes, so get a size that will fit in your
lunch box along with 1 or 2 food containers.

Cut some veggies into your favorite size, like you see at parties.
Cukes, celery, romaine lettuce; then there are those grape tomatoes
in bulk at Costco. You can store them separately in quart-size zip-
up plastic bags in the fridge. They don't take up too much space
that way. For your lunch box, divide out enough to eat for lunch
and one of your short work breaks. You can mix the veggies in
a sandwich baggie.

Cut up some fruit: apple slices, pear, banana, grapes, berries,
and then there are dried fruits you can get in bulk form: raisins,
apricots, prunes, cherries. Frozen fruits are fun, too.

Stop drinking sodas. Why? The carbonic acid leaches minerals
from your teeth and bones. Corn syrup is getting a really bad
rap. Sugar has no minerals; it actually pulls minerals out of
your body; then it causes your body to store fat; then you may
have the issue of Type 2 Diabetes. A friend of mine was losing
his eyesight. The MD challenged him to just make one change:
eliminate sodas with sugar. He switched to diet sodas. No
more problem. But I recommend you read up on Aspartame
and Splenda sweeteners. If you quit ALL sodas, you will be
way ahead on your Health Plan.

Avoid chlorinated and fluoridated tap water for drinking. Bring
your own bottled water. If you have filtered water at work
or the 5 gallon water dispenser, use that. A lot. Make your own
tea at home; look up recipes for something special, like chai tea
online. Sweeten it with Stevia extract (sweet leaf). We get that
at Trader Joe's, Whole Foods, Sprouts, Sunflower markets; it's a
powder in a bulk bottle or paper envelope portions. Taste it first:
one type has a metallic after-taste, so don't waste your money
on that.

Check out Dr. Oz' website for inspiration and the result of lots
of research made practical. Expand your awareness about health.
You asked for it, now do it, and then start to enjoy it.

(whew!) Paul

Meals that won't spoil....?

frisbinato

I am starting grad school and will be at school all day. I will have access to a locker and would like to store nice big lunches in there. I do not have a weight problem but do like to eat healthy. Are there any suggestions on things I could pack that will not spoil while they are in the locker? Thanks!

Answer
Most sandwiches will last. What I used to do was put the sandwiches and or salads...such as chicken ceaser salad, chicken salad, tuna etc... In an insulated type bag. Make your lunch and put it in the fridge IN the insulated bag. I had picked up small containers to put my mayo, salad dressings or other condiments in. When I had the extra money I just purchased a box of the individual mayo packets and dressing packets. You can get them at Sam's club, Bj's wholesale, Costco and similar stores.
You can also pack cheese cube with little cherry tomatoes, crackers, hummus,
You can grill veggies and mushrooms and make a veggie wrap. You can put the veggies in a separate container and put the tortilla's in foil or a large baggie and just roll them up with some cheese too, when you are ready to eat.
Also, Quinoa salad is great...there are many recipes online that you can try...healthy and won't spoil easily. I have made this one....chopped grilled veggies (zucchini, carrot, onion, parsnip, bella mushrooms...you can use whatever you like). Add that to the cooked quinoa as well as some olive oil and chopped garlic. You can also add tomato and basil...all depends on the combo that you like. It's good cold or room temp.
Tomato, basil and mozzarella salad with chopped garlic (optional) Just mix up cut up tomato with a few leaves of cut up fresh basil and sliced mozzarella (fresh is best), mix with a little salt, pepper, balsamic vinegar and a little olive oil. Put in a container and eat with some bread...as a sandwich or just eat it with some foccacia.

What's the best way/product to keep a lunch hot for 4-5 hours?

insulated lunch bag thermos on ... -Flowers-Thermos-Insulated-Soft-Lunch-Box-Cooler-Tote-Bag-Purse-S
insulated lunch bag thermos image

periwinkle

I use cold packs to keep lunches cold, but what if I wanted to keep something hot? Is there anything on the market for that?

Answer
Thermos's are the safest thing. If you can't do that then just don't take it hot. IF you are keeping something hot for four to five hours and it isn't in a thermos...you are risking serious food poisoning.

Use a micro or eat something cold...don't risk your health. It should remain at 140 to be safe...anything under that after two hours is dangerous.

Keep cold foods cold and hot foods hot. Bacteria grow rapidly in temperatures between 40° F and 140° F.

Help keep cold foods under 40° F by using an insulated lunch bag or box. Store lunch bags in a cool area and out of direct sunlight. If possible, refrigerate the lunch bags.

If refrigeration is not possible, place a frozen gel pack on top of perishable foods. Or, pack ice in a tightly sealed plastic bag. You may need to use two bags to prevent leaking.

Frozen boxes of juice, applesauce, yogurt, or milk also keep foods cold, and they thaw gradually to become part of the childâs lunch. Sandwiches made the night before can be frozen individually in clean, tightly sealed plastic bags. Whole grain breads are best for freezing as white bread gets soggy.

Cold foods are often taken on field trips and picnics. To package bulk foods, fill an ice chest or thermal container with ice or gel packs, or use frozen cartons of juice or milk (placed in clean, sealed plastic bags to prevent leaking) to cover the food.

All foods placed into the chest must be cold before being packed. Prepare and refrigerate or freeze the food before packing. For example, cheese sandwiches can be prepared the evening before and frozen. At lunchtime, the sandwiches will be chilled, but not frozen.

Hot foods such as soup, stew, chili should be kept over 140° F. These foods should be heated thoroughly before packing. Next, fill a wide-mouth thermos bottle with hot water for several minutes. Pour out the water and fill immediately with the hot food. Tighten well.

Properly heated and packaged food should remain higher than 140° F for about four-six hours. To prevent burns, childcare providers and teachers should help young children open the thermos at mealtime.

How can you keep food hot for a long time?

My fiance drives a bookmobile for a living. He was taking lunch from home, storing it in the on-board mini refrigerator, and warming it in the on-board microwave. Now, the library has gotten a smaller bus, and there is no space for a microwave. Do any products do a good job of keeping food hot for 3-5 hours, or does the poor guy just have to eat sandwiches for the rest of his life?

Answer
There are many insulated bags for lunch that may do the job. Also you may find some that plug into the lighter/accessory outlet and warm up food. Also there are thermoses for soup.

Here's something that looks promising.

I'm sure if you google or bing or something you can find more alternatives.

any actual brands would be great too! thanks

Answer
Apple -- just continue your brainstorming let your Imagination go

How about artichoke hearts mushrooms there is a cocktail mix also
search the canned food isle

But why not focus on your sandwich - - you can use many different breads - several kind of greens or sprouts - and sliced cheeses or cheese spreads to titillate your taste buds - I fear you may have excluded the many sausage meats that the deli has
Have you also thought of soups - stews and other casseroles spaghetti raviolis lasagna that you can take in a wide mouth thermos hot or cold like jello- potato - macaroni - potato salads
and remember they make insulated back packs for just this purpose - - along with plastic ice bags
My brain is tired - - I wish you only the best

Any good gift ideas for someone going to work on the oil rigs? Something they might need on arrival?

cm

There are probably many things people may have not thought of needing until they arrived to live on the oil rigs, like clean sheets or something?? Anyone know what that item(s) might be?

Answer
Former roughie here.

Old Lady is right. SOCKS, SOCKS, SOCKS. Good heavy wool ones and lots of them. Make sure he goes out with at least one pair per day of his hitch. You might not always get to wash them and you are nuts if you wear them for more than one shift.

With socks there is also good BOOTS. You can make due with the cheaper rubber steel toes, but trust me, the expensive ones are totally worth it. I made due with insulated Baffins for the longest time. Had problems with blisters and traction on steel plating (extremely important) Bought a pair of heavy rubber boots commonly known as "inverts" (because they're necessary for invert drilling) Cost me $250 but they were totally worth it. Also if he's going out now, get the -100 degree boots ($200)as well. Maybe you won't wear em, but better safe than sorry. There will be days when you NEED them. (Give him a gift certificate for Marks or something and buy them in Calgary or Edmonton. You will get the right size and save big bucks)

CELL PHONE- Absolute necessity. Get one with analog and digital coverage

CASH- Come with a couple grand in your pocket or access to it. Lots of companies expect you to cover living expenses for the first couple weeks until you get your first subsistence pay.

CERTIFICATIONS- H2S Alive and Standard First Aid are absolute necessities to work in the patch.

FIREPROOF CLOTHES- You have to wear either all natural clothes of fireproof synthetic stuff, which can get pricey. He'll go through alot

BAGS of rubber GLOVES, glove insulators, "green king" gloves (NO LEATHER)- You would be amazed how many pairs you'll go through

Beyond that there is lots of other stuff that is good to carry with you but not as necessary. Extra blankets and sheets for example. Small cooler to keep food. Lunch kit. It depends on where you end up. Maybe you'll be in a motel and need to cook for yourself. Maybe you'll be in a good camp and not need anything. It's hard to say. A good winter jacket for camp and travelling is a good idea.

What you will not have to worry about with most employers in personal protective stuff. By law they are supposed to supply that sort of stuff. If they don't have it there, they will tell you what you need and give you funds to go get it. For example very often companies have color coded hard hats (Green is almost a standard color for new/inexperienced guys. Less often you see things like blue for management, red for safety etc)

Good luck. One last word of warning though. Watch the price of oil. How much work that is out there directly corresponds to that in more industries than you'd expect.

Fast Food That Will Keep for 7 hours without Refrigeration?

insulated lunch cooler bag for men on Lunch Bags For Men - Buy Lunch Bag,Lunch Bags For Men,Insulated Lunch ...
insulated lunch cooler bag for men image

Dark

I need to get some fast food early in the morning (5am) and put it in a bag until about noon, for lunch. Nothing hot will work, since it'll become soggy, and unfortunately, Subway isn't open that early. Any ideas?
If all else fails, I guess I'll have to bring a homemade sandwich.

Answer
The only restaurants that I know are open at 5am are diners, Dunkin Donuts, and any 24-hour Wendys or McDs that might exist where you are. But you really don't have to be stuck with their stuff, and none of it will still be nice and tasty by the time you eat it. So instead, make stuff at home and bring it.

You can buy insulated lunch bags for cheap - often less than $5 - and put a small ice pack (also cheap) at the bottom, in effect allowing you to bring anything you'd like for lunch. Here's an example of a manly insulated lunch bag, and of an ice pack, so you know what I mean:

http://www.amazon.com/Insulated-Lunch-Cooler-Bag-Black/dp/B000IBH0BS/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1361394365&sr=8-1&keywords=man%27s+insulated+lunch+bag
http://www.amazon.com/Thermos-Ice-Mat-9-Cube/dp/B001TWI81G/ref=sr_1_4?s=home-garden&ie=UTF8&qid=1361394404&sr=1-4&keywords=lunch+bag+ice+pack

Insulated lunch boxes come bigger and smaller than that, as well as more narrow, so if you need to find one to stick inside something you're carrying, you should be able to do so. You can buy stuff like this at Target, the supermarket, Walmart, etc.

If you want to bring something hot, you can also do that. You can buy an insulated Thermos, and put it in your bag. That way you can have soup, Mac & Cheese, leftovers from dinner, etc.
http://www.amazon.com/Thermos-Foogo-Proof-Stainless-Steel/dp/B0025Y6742/ref=sr_1_5?s=home-garden&ie=UTF8&qid=1361394468&sr=1-5&keywords=insulated+thermos

In this way, you can pack stuff from home, and save money like that - but you can also eat hot or cold foods, your choice, no risk of spoilage.

How do you make a cold pack? (10 POINTS FOR BEST ANSWER)?

Tracy

My boyfriend has a business job that is going to have him outdoors next week. He wants to wear a cold pack of some sort hidden in his suit so that he's not sweating in his suit. What kind would work best and could we make one?

Answer
Found this:
http://www.crunchgear.com/2009/06/16/the-new-ice-suit-keeps-sweating-men-cool-in-the-summer-heat/

You could try to make your own by getting some thin ice packs for a lunch box, wrap them in paper towel, and place them in a ziplock bag.

The paper towel will help to insulate the ice packs (making them last longer) and condense on the bag less. You don't want it to be too cold or his shirt will get wet... paper towels can prevent this (on the inside of the bag).

Try to keep it as thin as possible and have him slip them in the inside pockets of his jacket.

OR, what I do... is just wear a workout shirt like Under Armor that wicks sweat away keeping it from dripping onto his dress shirt. No ice needed and it keeps the sweat down...

ANOTHER trick is to carry a bottle of ice water. If he drinks the water he will lower his core temperature telling his body to sweat less.

Good luck to your boyfriend and you! Hope I helped!

Well my friends would always call my lunch the "dessert". I would always take it as a joke, because I wasn't really concerned about my weight or anything like that. My mom packs my lunch, so she isn't much of a cook so she just throws in a bag of chips, a few strawberries, and a nutty bar. It's kinda our usual thing lol but recently I decided to try jelly and it's AMAZING so I eat peanut butter and jelly sandwiches all the time now haha. But my friends still think my lunch is unhealthy. All of my friends' parents pack their kids lunch with fancy, cooked lunches and a small piece of chocolate as their dessert. And also I am a dancer, NOT A RUNNER, so whenever we run in PE they always act concerned about what I'm eating. It's so annoying. I am more of a sprinter, not a long distance runner. I also have a 6 pack! But nooo, abs don't matter, if you can't run a mile in 5 minutes your unhealthy!! Also I remember the last time I ran the mile my friends were talking during lunch and they were all like "Ugh I got 6 minutes on the mile, I am SOO out of shape!" And then after 10 minutes of them complaining later they asked me "What did you get on the mile?" And I replied "10 minutes and (forgot time lol) seconds" and they were all like "Oh.." and looked at each other all weird. I dance 12 hours a week but according to my friends I am out of shape?! I am sick of it and I want them to stop calling my lunch unhealthy. What are some good yet easy yet tasty foods? Haha my mom is lazy about packing lunches and also I want my lunch to taste GOOD, unlike most of my friends' lunches. Thanks!

Answer
Actually, you and your Mom are not that far off the mark. With a few changes, you can make your lunch pleasing, and healthier. But, make no mistake, peanut butter really is not the best substitute for say, an egg, or a couple ounces of baked chicken. But it is good, and filling, and somewhat healthy. diabetics get to have it, so can you. Watch the amount you put on the sandwich, 2 tablespoons is the serving size.

Swap out the white bread on your sandwich to whole wheat bread. And switch the jelly to honey. Yum, honey is packed with good nutrition, and a classmate showed me her PB and H sandwich back in 2nd grade. Love them.
Toss in a banana or an apple, your strawberries are fine if they do not have sugar on them.

Switch out the chips to pretzels, or veggie chips. Or, bring some baked chips and salsa. Salsa has almost ) calories. And it is good for you.

Wraps are great, use your imagination, or copy flavors from the fast food restaurants.

things that are good for you, and taste great, are easy to pack, and are healthy are:
a box of raisins
a package of almonds, or trail mix, or dried peanuts
a fruit cup [just pour fruit cocktail into a tupperware, rather than buy that expensive one at the store
some healthy cookies, like oatmeal raisin
Cheese, like laughing cow, and some healthy crackers. Or a cube of cheddar
carrot sticks
-celery sticks stuffed with peanut butter, or Kraft jar cheese, found in the grocery aisle by the Velveeta. My Dad liked the pimento, rivers liked the Old english. Stick some raisins on the peanut butter, call it "ants on a log."
A boiled egg, or a deviled egg, made with diet mayo. You can't taste that it is diet because of the spices.

Do what Rivers does, and take leftovers from supper to school. a plastic container with a sturdy lid, or a wide mouth thermos would work. Pack things like crackers and bread in plastic, too, so they do not get crunched. So easy, go eat your dinner, let the leftovers cool, and go back and scoop them up into your container and put them in the refrigerator.
cook extra, and have enough for Mom, too for her to take to work. It is no less trouble to cook 4 pork chops, than it is to cook 2.

good luck!

Where can I find a plastic divided container for kids' lunch?

April M

My kids LOVE Lunchables but I would like to save some money and make them myself. Do you know where I can find a container that is divided like the lunchables dishes? It needs to be small enough to fit in a kid's lunchbox but with 3 or 4 different compartments.

Answer
You can find containers anywhere but I used to do the same thing and I had a favorite container! This is called a sandwich keeper but has 3 sections! I used the sandwich part for the crackers...then used the side with two sections as the part for cheese and meat. There is a divider that snaps down to keep the sections from "mixing" and then the entire thing folds in half so it is only slightly larger than a slice of bread. Fits easily into a lunch bag. Here is the link for the one I bought:

OK, at lunch in school, my friend called some dude a douchebag. Our very clean minded, very new to dirty slang friend asked her, with her head cocked like a cat, "What's that?" My friend started freaking out, not knowing how to explain this. Long story short, she just told our guy friend to explain, but he didn't know either. I have a sore throat, so i couldn't explain XD someone explain for my friend?

Answer
A douche is something that people DO actually use. They're just not a common thing anymore.

A douche is a bottle with a small nozzle on the end - the nozzle is inserted into the vagina, the bottle is squeezed and the liquid goes into the vagina to help clean it. Not a whole lot of women use them, if you're hygienic they aren't too necessary.

Very smart of your friend to ask. People love throwing around insults while having no idea what they actually mean.

What does it take to open your own small business?

dollye k

I want to open a resale shop specifically geared towards pregnant women and young children. I would sell gently used maternity clothes, baby clothes, and baby gear. Are there any tips, books, or websites that are especially helpful?

Answer
I'd suggest talking to other small businesses in the area you are thinking of locating. You can probably find some easily who would be willing to take a lunch with you. Ask them about the process they went through to get ready for business, what foot traffic in the area is like, what their biggest surprises were their first few years. Pick their brains a little you never know what good info you can get from people that are in your impact area, plus this allows you to start networking , meaning if they know you they may send business your way.

Look at your expenses and make sure you have everything covered. What is your estimated income for the store? What will you be able to do if you're running under plan? How can you ensure a steady supply of product? Look at the store next time you go grocery shopping and ask yourself how they get things stocked, inventoried, rang, bagged etc and have answers for how that will look in your store.

Fast Food That Will Keep for 7 hours without Refrigeration?

What really happened at the Columbine shooting?

Q. I am not a resident of the us but have read about this incident in many books and heard many songs about it and am curious about the incident as to what really happened there.

Answer
What Really Happened At Columbine?

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Teacher Dave Sanders was among those who were killed. (CBS)

(CBS) In recent months, America has witnessed a wave of shootings at its high schools. Each new eruption of violence brings comparisons to another murderous rampage - at Columbine High School in Jefferson County, Colorado.

It's been two years since Columbine, and today, many people - especially some parents of the murdered children - still believe the worst school massacre in American history might have been averted if the Sheriff's Department and school authorities had done their jobs.

60 Minutes II has been investigating the shootings at Columbine for the past six months, and has found new and surprising information about what happened there. Some of that information was in the Sheriff's files - undisclosed - until CBS News went to court to have it released. And some of it comes from two former security officials at the school district who say that eight months before the shootings, they developed a plan that they say might have prevent the killings, a plan that they say the school all but ignored.

On April 20, 1999, 18-year-old Eric Harris was in the garage of his home, filling duffel bags with bombs and rigging weapons in his trenchcoat. A few miles away, 17-year-old Dylan Klebold was preparing his own weapons. Then they drove to Columbine High School.

The Affidavit
60 Minutes II obtained the affidavit pertaining to the Web site after families of the victims and CBS News complained that some documents were missing from the 11,000 pages Jefferson County District Judge Brooke Jackson ordered released last year.

Warning: document contains graphic language.

It was a warm spring day, and a lot of students there were eating lunch outside. Danny Rohrbaugh, a freshman, was outside with some friends. It was 11:19. For the next few minutes, the students in the cafeteria heard gunfire. As a school security camera recorded them, some of those students looked out to see Danny lying dead on the sidewalk. He'd been shot three times. The attack on Columbine had begun.

At 11:23, as students hid under tables, a cafeteria worker was already on the phone with a 911 operator.

Just outside the cafeteria, Harris and Klebold killed two students and wounded six more. Then they turned away from their victims and headed for the school's wst entrance. As the gunmen headed into the school, business teacher and coach Dave Sanders rushed through the cafeteria, telling the remaining students to stay down, then headed upstairs to help others. As he turned a corner, he was shot.

âHe just had a great heart for kids,â says Rich Long, his friend and fellow teacher. Bleeding heavily, Sanders staggered into a science room.

Art teacher Patty Nielson was on hall duty just inside the west doors when she saw Eric Harris. She ran inside and called 911. The dispatcher told her that help was on the way.

Police were at the school right away. Within five minutes of the first shots fired, the sheriff's deputy assigned to work at the school was in the west parking lot. He exchanged gunfire with Harris who retreated into the school. That deputy was soon joined by six other policemen who took positions around the building. None of them entered the school, where Harris and Klebold were heading toward the library, shooting in the halls and throwing bombs into the cafeteria below. They walked into the library and began shooting students.

Among those killed there was Sophomore Kelly Fleming. Her parents, Don and DeeDee, say that the police should have entered the school earlier.

âThere was no one in that school that had a gun other than the two killers,â says DeeDee. âAnd no one pursued them. No one tried to engage them.â

âFor almost 20 minutes she waited. Twenty minutes, that's a long time for someone to have the opportunity to come in and make a difference.â

The Jefferson County Sheriff's Office declined to speak with us, but in a letter, Sheriff John Stone described the Columbine attack as a "unique set of circumstances, the magnitude of which no one had dealt with before." He also cited some of the obstacles that kept his men from entering the building right away - including bombs, booby traps, and a lack of information about how many gunmen were in the school.

Other parents are also angry. âThey're listening to kids getting shot and murdered inside the library over a 911 call and their job is to protect people,â says Bruce Beck, the stepfather of Lauren Townsend, another student who was killed in the library.

In his letter, Sheriff Stone said that by taking positions around the building and waiting for SWAT teams to arrive, his officers were doing what they were trained to do. He said his officers "responded quickly, returned fire, deployed appropriately and safely extracted hundreds of trapped and terrified students and teachers." He also asked us to talk to Larry Glick, who directs a national organization that trains SWAT teams.

âThey believed that they really had six to eight armed individuals inside there,â says Glick of the police outside the school. âAnd if you're in those shoes of those officers, they felt that it was more reasonable to wait until additional personnel responded to move in.â
Harris and Klebold then left the library and walked downstairs to the school commons. They were in no hurry. Harris stopped for a drink of water. Klebold wandered through the cafeteria, then lobbed a pipe bomb toward the window. It started a fire that could be seen by police officers outside the school.

When student Evan Todd came out of the school, he told police that there were wounded students in the school. He even told them how he had come out of the school. But no policeman went in that door, the shortest route to the library and to the science room, where Dave Sanders lay wounded. When Todd came out that door, there were at least 20 police officers surrounding the school. But by the time the first SWAT team was assembled and geared up to enter the building, it was 12:06 - 47 minutes after the shooting had begun. That SWAT team entered on the side of the building farthest from Dave Sanders, and from the library, where some survivors lay hidden among the dead.

By the time Klebold and Harris committed suicide at 12:08, at least 75 police officers were surrounding Columbine High School. The first SWAT team had been in the building only two minutes. It would be nearly three hours before they would know the gunmen were dead. As the day wore on, hundreds of police and rescue workers responded to the Jefferson County Sheriff's Department's call for help at Columbine High. Throughout the day, nearly a thousand police officers and rescue personnel from 47 agencies arrived at the scene. Many of those officers spent the entire day with nothing to do, waiting for an assignment from commanders on the scene.

While the crowd of reporters and worried parents grew outside the school, students and teachers in Science Room Three struggled to get help for teacher Dave Sanders, who had been bleeding profusely since he was shot at 11:26.

Melanie Poleshook, a sophomore, was in the room with him. âThere seemed like there was a lot of officers walking around outside with nothing to do,â she says. âAnd I don't know why they couldn't have sent maybe a few more people directly to come to our room.â

Just before noon, Mike Rotole put a sign in the window. It said, "One bleeding to death." The Jefferson County Sheriff's command post was well aware of Dave Sanders' condition and where he was. Since 11:42, a teacher in the room with Sanders had been on the phone with operators at Sheriff's headquarters. And once Mike Rotole put the sign in the classroom window, radio calls started coming from officers urging the command post to rescue him.

At 1:10 PM - nearly two hours after the first shots were fired - a SWAT team finally entered the west side of the school building, where injured victims were waiting for help. Immediately they faced a maze of flooded rooms, fire alarms, and smoke. But worse than that, according to members of that SWAT team who asked not to be named, the command post never told them there were injured victims in te library or the science rooms.

At the same time, police dispatchers were telling the teachers and students with Dave Sanders that help was on the way.

âThey'd say "Oh we'll be here in like 20 minutes,ââ says Mike Rotole, a student who was in the room with Sanders. âSo we'd, you know, get ready and lay there. And then no one would come.â Rotole says this went on for three hours. Sanders was conscious almost the entire time.

As Dave Sanders lay bleeding, SWAT officers directly below him were evacuating classrooms full of children stranded on the first floor. Then they had to escort those children out of the cafeteria, past the dead bodies of their classmates, and on to safety.
Larry Glick, an expert on SWAT tactics, says it was required procedure at that time for SWAT officers to clear each room before moving on to the next.

For two and a half hours, the first SWAT team cleared classrooms on the side of the school farthest from where most of the shooting had taken place. A second team evacuated students and staff from the rooms around the cafeteria. When the Sheriff's command post finally told that SWAT team to look for Dave Sanders - they didn't know where to go.

SWAT officers finally reached Dave Sanders in Science Room Three at 2:42 - more than three hours after he'd been shot. They evacuated the kids right away, but held Sanders there to wait for a paramedic. That paramedic didn't arrive for another 42 minutes.

âWe said âWell can we carry him out, you know, let us carry him out,ââ Rotole says. âAnd they said âNo, we need to get you out safely. And there's paramedics on the way right now.ââ

But by the time a paramedic finally got to Dave Sanders, at 3:24, he was already dead. Sanders was the last of 15 people to die at Columbine that day. Twenty-three wounded were taken to hospitals. Six had brain or spinal injuries. Several nearly bled to death. Doctors at six hospitals worked on wounded children all through the night, and saved every one of them.

How do I have a great weekend with my 21 month old son?

john

I am keeping my 21 month old son for the weekend. I am pretty excited about it, but don't really know what to do with him. The weather is going to be horrible. What kinds of things might he like to do? I don't want to ask his mom because I want to seem like I know what I'm doing. Help please!

Answer
If you decide to go somewhere, here are a few options:

1. Indoor playground; your son will love interacting with you and other kids. There may be slides, tunnels, bounce houses, etc. Google what is in your area

2. If you dare, Chuck E Cheese or another child friendly restaurant. It can be very chaotic, but every kid should go there at least once. They do have toddler rides like tunnels and a mini merry-go-round

3. What about the mall? Some malls have activities like train rides, carousels, the little rides in the center of the mall. It's nice just to get out of the house and walk around sometimes.

4. Fast food restaurant with playground; I know, fast food isn' the best option. However, many have healthy options now. For example, substitute the french fries for apple slices. Their playgrounds are a lot of fun and I haven't met a kid that doesn't like it there.

5. A Children's Museum or Aquarium. You really can't go wrong with either. Be sure to take pictures.

6. A pet store. Once again, doesn't cost you anything. However, kids love to go in and look at the fish, dogs, and other animals. We take our daughter there and she stares at the animals forever!

Stay at home options:

1. Bubbles keep my child and my dogs busy for a long time

2. Fingerpaints. Yes, a bit messy. Just make sure you use an apron or trash bag (turned upside down with holes cut out for head and arms) and make a couple pictures. Frame them and keep one for you and give one to his mom to show her you know what you're doing!

3. Puzzles; my daughter is just shy of 2 years old and loves playing with her puzzles. You can get them for about $3 or less at Wal-Mart and Target. It's educational and fun

4. Watch a movie together. Almost anything Disney is good. Don't be surprised if your child doesn't make it through it, but it's a nice activity around naptime. The Incridibles and Lion King is a favorite in my house.

5. Let your son explore in the kitchen. My daughter loves to get out all the pots and pans when I'm cooking and bang on them. Cheap and fun. A little noisy, but it doesn't last all day. I keep her entertained by letting her help me make lunch and she enjoys it

6. Mega blocks or legos. Build together and use your imaginations.

7. Wrestle. It's okay to rough house, just don't let it get out of hand. He will enjoy wrestling with you and you will wear him out. Kids at that age have so much energy!

I don't like cafeteria food, so what are some good homemade recipies for lunch you put put in a paper bag and bring to school? I'm kinda tired of the old turkey sandwitch and box juice thing,so what else can I eat?
-adding that I don't eat red meat or pork.^_^

Answer
-veggie "pinwheels"

take 1 large tortilla. spread cream cheese (or hummus works good too) on it and add cucumbers, ham, and cheese (my daughters like provolone). roll tortilla up and slice into little 1" circles.

-ritz crackers and chicken/tuna salad

-chinese noodle salad

1 pack of ramen noodles (uncooked and no seasoning)
coleslaw (the prepackaged kind)
diced turkey or chicken (optional)
sesame or sunflower seeds
soy sauce
sugar (optional)
olive oil (about 1-2 tbsp)

mix together desired amount of coleslaw, olive oil, soy sauce and meat. once well coated crush up ramen noodles and add to mixture along with the seeds and some sugar if you'd like a sweet kick. I ate this alot for lunch when I was in nursing school-it was good!!

-cottage cheese and fruit

-peanut butter and banana sandwich (or peanut butter and apple sandwich)

-make "tea" sandwiches.

ham,cheese,cream cheese spread, and cranberries

salads:

-asian salad (like applebee's oriental chicken salad-my fav)

romaine lettuce
red cabbage
green cabbage
carrots (julienned)
chopped green onion
sliced almonds
chow mein noodles
chicken diced

toss all together and add this dressing:

3tbsp honey
1.5 tbsp rice wine vinegar
1/4c mayo
1 tsp dijon mustard
1/8 tsp sesame oil (can use canola or olive too)

for drinks-avoid soda at all costs-it's not good for you. my girls like to take bottled water with those crystal light mix-ins. or water w/fresh lemon slices (and a little grated ginger for zip) is great too.

hope this helps-if you want more ideas-just send me an email (i have 3 picky girls who I refuse to pay for hot lunches too b/c I can't monitor how much they eat that way.plus 2 of them have food allergies)

How to keep a soda cold?

Bronson

I'm planning on bringing a pop can to school tomorrow for lunch. I leave at 7 and eat at around 11:00. I want to bring a can of pop and keep it somewhat cold until lunch.

Are there any ways to do this without an insulated lunchbox or icy-hot bag? I know I have one and I could find one if I tried, but that's last resort, please.

Answer
Never Freeze a cola. The carbonated water will become carbolic acid. this by itself doesn't hurt and isn't poisonous, but it will react with the sweetener and become bitter beyond belief!

Three things:

1) if U can get some ice from somewhere (school kitchen, nurse) just bring a cup too.

2) if not the can, Ice packed in a ziplock bag wrapped in a towel, has the best chance.

3) find your Thermal bag.

lunch ideas for college?

Char Webb

at college i get so bored, i bring the sam old lunches: sandwiches, crisps, a drink, and a chocolate bar. Anyone got any ideas of stuff i could bring to eat at college?

Answer
I would carefully consider your containers and get some insulated pieces. They will help you expand your food choices to keep hot and cold foods safe and yummy. Get double the amount you would carry so that you can have one set in use, and keep one set at home getting cleaned and chilled. Make sure everything is easy to clean and get a baby bottle brush and some white vinegar to help you keep everything fresh. To keep things clean run a sink of hot soapy water, add 2 cups of white vinegar and let your items soak. Then scrub them clean, rinse, and let them air dry.

You can start with 4-6 reusable drink bottles. 2-3 drinks packed per day will keep you away from the vending machines and coffee shops, saving money and allow you to choose healthier options. Add to that 2 insulated soup thermos, and some reusable disposable plastic containers with lids, some zipper bags, and 2 flexible, reusable ice packs...and 2 insulated lunch totes that fit half your gear in each. You can also get a stash of handi-wipes. These are a washable/reusable very sturdy paper towels, meant for household cleaning, but they work great for this, pack damp in a zipper bag to wipe your face. They can be discarded after a few uses. And tuck in a small bottle of hand sanitizer, and some washable plastic silverware.

With better containers you can make use of leftovers, take hot soup or pasta, etc, even a slice of meatloaf or a hunk of roast and mashed potatoes.

As for typical lunch food choices, you can pack fresh veggies...if you like to dip, slice your peppers, scallions, celery, carrots, in sticks and stick them straight up in a container (cut your food to fit that container) that has dip or hummus in the bottom...pull each piece out to find it pre dipped.

If you prefer a salad you eat with a fork, pack some chunked up salad veggies, some chilled pasta, some bottled salad dressing (or herbs and olive oil). Then when you sit down to eat, add a packet of tuna, chicken, a string cheese, or pepperoni, and toss it all together...packing your salad in an oversized container will allow you to add and stir easily.

You could swap out the pasta in the above recipe for chilled barley, rice, lentils, potatoes...or swap out the dressing for chilled marinara sauce.

Instead of chips/crisps you can try pita chips, crackers. They also make veggie poofs that are similar to cheetos. I wonder if you are from UK do you have these or know what I mean. You can also pack plain tortilla chips (instead of the spray painted flavored kind) and carry your own fresh bean dip or salsa. These are healthier and you get better flavor and variety.

For different sandwich options, switch our your bread for bagel, pita, tortilla, flatbread, or skip the bread altogether and pack all your sandwich fillings as a salad.

For drink options, you can buy juice box type containers of lots of things: milk, yoo-hoo chocolate drink, or buy drinkable yogurt or smoothies. You can also use your reusable containers to prepare yourself an iced tea or coffee, a lemonade, or powdered drink.

For dessert...fresh fruits! Grapes, apples, oranges, bananas, pear, peach can all be packed whole...or you can cut and bowl up some berries, melon, kiwi, papaya, mango, pineapple, mandarin oranges.

Other dessert...you can use purchased snack cakes, homemade cookies, make cheesecake cups, make caramel popcorn, make marshmallow treats with cereal, make a chocolate ganache and stuff to dip in it.

You can also freeze certain things. You can freeze pudding cups, yogurt cups, jello cups, and applesauce cups. Pack them frozen, they are cold and refreshing when you sit down to eat. They will help keep everything else cold. You can freeze drink bottles if they aren't all the way full.

How do you make Happy Meal Treats to take to school?

kids lunch bags with drink holder on Cut The Rope Lunch Bag And Drink Bottle | eBay

gensler97

I have heard of moms sending these to school before. They are individually bagged for each kid, with a treat that resembles a hamburger, fries ( I think it is those string chips ), a drink, and a little toy.

Answer
Are you looking for a little treat that is shaped like a hamburger and fries? Or are you looking for fun lunch treats in general?

Here is a snack combo treat that resembles a burger and fries. The "burger" is a cookie and the fries are like a peanut butter fudge. They are from quickcooking.com There are pictures at the website.

Cookie Burger
http://recipes.tasteofhome.com/eRMS/recp.aspx?recid=7956
INGREDIENTS
1 package (17-1/2 ounces) sugar cookie mix
2 drops yellow food coloring, optional
1-1/2 cups peanut butter chips, chopped
TOPPING:
3/4 cup flaked coconut
5 to 6 drops green food coloring
FILLING:
1/2 cup butter, softened
2-2/3 cups confectioners' sugar
1/2 cup baking cocoa
1/4 cup milk
1 teaspoon vanilla extract

DIRECTIONS
Prepare cookie dough according to package directions; add yellow food coloring if desired. Stir in peanut butter chips. Shape into 1-1/4-in. balls; place 2 in. apart on ungreased baking sheets. Flatten slightly with a glass. Bake at 375° for 9-10 minutes or until lightly browned. Remove to wire racks to cool.
Place coconut in a plastic bag; sprinkle 5 to 6 drops green food coloring into bag and shake until color is evenly distributed.
In a small mixing bowl, cream butter until smooth. Add the confectioners' sugar, cocoa, milk and vanilla; beat until smooth. Frost the bottoms of 22 cookies; sprinkle with coconut. Top with remaining cookies and gently squeeze together. Yield: 22 sandwich cookies.
"You may substitute your favorite sugar cookie recipe for the cookie mix; just add the yellow food coloring if desired and the peanut butter chips"

Peanutty Fries
http://recipes.tasteofhome.com/eRMS/recp.aspx?recid=7957
INGREDIENTS
1 package (10 ounces) peanut butter chips
1 cup sweetened condensed milk
Paper muffin cup liners (2-1/2-inch diameter)
Red icing, optional

In a microwave, melt peanut butter chips with milk; stir until smooth. Pour into a foil-lined and greased 9-in. baking pan. Cool completely at room temperature. Lift out of the pan and invert onto a cutting board.
Remove foil; cut into 3-in. x 1/4-in. strips. Fold muffin cup liners in half, pressing out creases; fold in half again. Fold point under; use as holder for fries. Use icing for ketchup if desired. Yield: about 3-1/2 dozen.

Not just what YOU carry, but what anyone would carry in their purse/tote/backpack... List EVERYTHING you can come up with (but still makes sense) and please number them, because whoever lists the most gets best answer.

I put this in the Adolescent section because I want answers from high school kids.

What should I wear to this PhD open day and interview?

fashion lunch bags for women on handbag fashion new handbags women 2013 PU bag woman lada lunch ...
fashion lunch bags for women image

M M

It's an open day involving some introductory talks, an "informal" lunch with current students and staff, a tour of the labs and then a "formal interview".

The range of different things going on is giving me difficulties in choosing what to wear...

It's in the genetics section of a hospital.

Answer
Depending on your gender, of course....but I'd say regardless - formal wear.
You can be 'mildly informal' and wear plain black trousers and a blouse/shirt/sweater, rather than wearing a two-piece suit. Don't wear a tie if you feel that this is too formal, but make sure the shirt or blouse looks neat. If you do want to wear a tie, you should go with solid colours rather than an elaborate design. Have either a blouse or a well-pressed shirt, and if you want, a blazer or suit jacket. If it's cold, wear a neutral-coloured sweater. White shirts look clean, but may make you look like a waiter! Try a pinstripe or coloured shirt instead. Black is also flattering, but beware if you have animals, as you'll be picking off light coloured hairs forever.
Polished shoes or boots are okay - but make them plain. No trainers. Black socks, preferably long ones, are useful if you have a tendency to cross your legs when seated.
The overall idea is that you're presenting a neat and tidy packaged personality, so avoid carrying excess bags (handbags, etc) - use one case or messenger bag for the day. If you have to carry a purse, make it a small and unobtrusive one.
Take a coat if needed for over your blazer or jacket, but not something that's 'high fashion'. If you choose to wear earrings, go for the 'less is more' approach. If you have piercings, you may opt to take them out or replace larger pieces for less obtrusive studs. Large necklaces might also be difficult in lab situations, so avoid anything too dangly. Hair is also a strong point - for lab work you'll need to tie up or tie back long hair, so make sure that if this is the case you can carry some spare hair bobbles or clips with you on the day.
Try not to use strong perfumes or deodorants - it's something I've found people forget about and then tend to overdo because they worry they'll sweat. The result is one very over-perfumed student! In a lab or close environment this isn't quite as pleasant. Use a neutral antiperspirant and mild deodorant if you feel this might affect you.

For women -
Makeup is also a concern, sometimes - if you want to use the basics, it will be better to go for a 'neutral' look, but don't undermine your self-confidence by making yourself feel plain.

For men -
Designer stubble is not really preferable, so either shave clean or maintain your facial hair as you need to.

Which food or meals are typical of the Netherlands?

psychoxand

Main courses, desserts, entrees... whatever. Knock yourselves out, as long as its dutch.

And you can throw in some places of interest within the Netherlands while you're at it.
Thanks.

Answer
Food
As shown in Van Gogh's Aardappeleters (The Potato Eaters), the main ingredient in old-fashioned Dutch cooking is potatoes. These are often boiled and are usually accompanied by meat and boiled vegetables. The Dutch traditionally don't use very many spices and are very fond of pouring gravy onto everything. The food sounds bland but over the years I have had some incredible meals in Holland. One of my all time favourite restaurants is actually Dutch.
Aside from all the potatoes the consumption of dairy products is extremely high, which, according to some scientists, accounts for the high average height of Dutch men and women - personally, I blame their liberal views on drugs. Some of my favourite Cloggy cuisine includes:

Vla: This was my staple food when I lived in the Netherlands. I ate it for breakfast, lunch and dinner. It's a thick sweet milk pudding which is similar to English custard. It's available in numerous flavours - though the best is undoubtedly butterscotch. For true heaven add a box of Dutch style chocolate sprinkles to the vla.

Hagelslag: Found in small boxes on every Dutch breakfast table, these chocolate sprinkles are wonderful when sprinkled on bread or added to val. The white chocolate ones are especially lovely. Dutch people find it rather strange that other countries don't have these.

Drop: Nothing is more Dutch than drop and I am reliably informed that I am the only non-Dutch person to ever like it. Dutch people consume this sticky liquorice sweet in industrial quantities - it verges on an addiction. Two Dutch people meeting anywhere away from their beloved flat land will always ask, 'Do you have any drop.'

According to my girlfriend the times when one might enjoy drop are:

When you are depressed and need cheering up
When you are happy and want to celebrate
When you are hungry
When you have just eaten and need some help with digesting the meal
Just before bed
Before, during and after sex
Most people find the taste rather difficult to stomach and I have often heard it described as tasting like old socks.
Frikandel: A wonderful Dutch snack comprised off all the bits of horse the butcher hasn't been able to sell rolled into a long sausage, deep fried and served piping hot. The best ones are sold from greasy spoon style fast food stalls at railway stations.

Fries: The Dutch love their French Fries and it's somewhat of a national obsession to stand on street corners wolfing down a steaming bag of fries covered in saté sauce, or more traditionally, mayonnaise. As Vincent from Pulp Fiction reminds us:

Vincent: But you know what they put on French fries in Holland instead of ketchup?
Jules: What?
Vincent: Mayonnaise. I seen 'em do it. And I don't mean a little bit on the side of the plate, they fuckin' drown 'em in it.

Even more extreme is a patatje oorlog - literally meaning "French fries war" - indicating French fries with mayonnaise, ketchup and saté-sauce sprinkled with raw onions. The best fries can be found from stalls around Dam square and cost about US$0.50 for a large bag. Eating fries is one of the best things about Holland for me (perversely, my Dutch girlfriend refuses to let me eat fried food at home as it's unhealthy).

Haring: Another common sight on the streets of Amsterdam is people sliding raw herrings down their throats. This is something of an acquired taste and one which I am still working on. The first catch of the season is called Hollandse nieuwe ('Dutch new') and is considered a special treat.

Pea Soup: Another famous Dutch delight. Traditional recipes are passed from mother to daughter and guarded almost as closely as the Dutch guard their money. Dutch pea soup is a meal in itself and is full of fresh winter vegetables and chunks of bacon and sausage. You should be able to stand a spoon upright in a good pea soup.

Dutch Cheese
Holland is justifiably famous for its cheese, even if it does generally export only the lower quality cheeses - which I am sure the Dutch find terribly amusing. I always used to think of Dutch cheese as bland until I visited a cheese shop in Amsterdam and tried some of the local cheeses. Most have strong, complex flavours and are best enjoyed with a bottle of wine of two.
