I am President of the Board of Directors for my local volunteer fire department. Every year we have a recognition holiday dinner, and the Board gives something "useful" to the firefighters as a Christmas gift. In the past we've done t-shirts, long sleeve t-shirts, Leatherman multi-tools, hoodies, sweatshirts, polos, jackets, etc. What would be a unique, useful gift to give the firefighters that costs between $18 and $25 each?

Answer
I'm a hospital volunteer, and some of the really useful things we've received as gifts are:

A flashlight that has a regular beam on the top end, a red flashing light along one side, and a strong magnet on the bottom end

A small travel clock/calendar/calculator that you press the corner of the cover and it slowly opens and swings around behind to become the stand for the piece

One of those flat, round, battery-powered lights you push the curved plastic white lens to turn on and off ... it sits on a table or hangs on a wall - very useful by the bed at night, or in the bathroom when you need light but don't want to turn on a bright overhead light!!

A lidded thermal cup that fits in the car's cupholder

Passes for two to a local theatre

An Entertainment coupon book

A nifty combo sewing/first aid kit

A compact umbrella that opens up full size. Great for keeping under the front car seat in case of unexpected rain.

A fleece throw that rolls up and has a handle - logo on the flap that holds it when it's rolled up.

A calendar for the upcoming year ... made with photos of us in action ... or you could have them submit photos, artwork, etc. for use on the calendar (If you wanted the calendar to be a surprise, you could have them submit such items for a "contest.") I think they had them made at the local Office Max or Office Depot.

One of those emergency tools to keep in the car ... you can use it to break glass or cut seatbelts in case of an accident ... can be attached to the dashboard or door panel for quick access.

An insulated lunch bag with a drawstring pouch on the side for water bottle/beverage container

Everything that we've received has either had the organization's logo, etc. printed on it, or else a specially-printed sticker with logo, date, and something like "In appreciation for your time and service", etc.

Below are a couple of websites that have this kind of stuff. I know you can find something that will be just perfect!

24. A Pencil Eraser â Fold a rubber band in half a few times and use it to erase pencil markings. It works surprisingly well.Rubber Band Easter Egg
25. Keep those Files IN the Manila Folder â Manila folders are a great tool for filing papers until you accidently drop a one. Since a manila folder is nothing more than a sleeve, the files will spill out everywhere. A rubber band can fix that problem in jiffy.

tweety gir

theres about 2000 or more kids in my new high school and i have the last lunch so not only does the food suck when i get there but im usually way back in the line because my previous class is so far away from the cafeteria and i dont have time to eat anything. i was thinking i could take my own lunch but i need some variety. the only thing i can really think of is a home made sub sandwich and i cant think of anything else to go with it(i dont really want chips), any other ideas for lunches? also does anyone know of a good type/brand of lunch box or something that can keep hot food hot and cold food cold?
oh, and can we be mature about this?

Answer
Sandwiches are the easiest, and there are about a million different varieties to make. Cold pasta is also really good for lunch. You can also take salads or soups, depending on the weather. Invest in a good thermos, they are soo handy for soup, hot chocolate, hot water, etc. Take a lot of veggies, they are good for you and its better to snack on them than chips or snack foods. Try dried fruits and trail mix. Load up on fresh fruits too. I use an insulated bag that keeps everything the proper temperature.

How should I cut back on grocery bills?

children's pack lunch bags image

Lauren

My husband and I have six kids. It has been sort of sudden because we had three (which wasn't bad) and then we had triplets almost three years ago. As our kids grow our grocery bill is kind of dominating our income and it can be very stressful. I don't always want to feed them cheap food and it's not a major strain but I was wondering if anyone had tips for cutting back on groceries. I use coupons every so often but I wouldn't consider myself a "die-hard" coupon shopper (I often feel that people who go crazy with coupons end up buying products they wouldn't have otherwise purchased) and I price shop as well. So, in short, what do you do to save money when grocery shopping? Thanks :)

Answer
I use a few coupons for things I would normally buy anyway, and I buy when things are on sale. But you are correct that most coupons these days are for highly processed, high profit items that are best left on the shelf at the grocery store, in my opinion.

You don't say whether or not you work outside of the home, but I assume that with six kids you don't. I saved money when my kids were young by packing lunches for both my kids and my husband every day they ate out of the house. We almost never ate out or brought home takeout. If we did buy something like pizza to bring home, we would get one pizza and supplement it with salad made at home.

I make most baked goods, such as muffins, cookies, cupcakes and pies from scratch at home. They are much cheaper to bake than to buy, and the ingredients are much better and healthier. We get most of our fruits and vegetables at orchards and farm stores or raise them ourselves in our yard. Just this week, my husband picked sour cherries at a pick-your-own orchard for me to can at home for use this winter(I made him a cherry pie, too, for his efforts) and he picked fresh blueberries for me to freeze and make blueberry jam. I taught my children how to bake and cook food, and also gave each of them a small vegetable garden(four to six feet square is big enough for a child's garden). This taught them to appreciate vegetables, which they eat with enthusiasm.

There is a cheaper and better substitute for almost every expensive food at the grocery store. We eat popcorn popped in a big pot on the stove instead of bagged pre-popped or microwave popcorn. You can learn to make pizza at home, with a biscuit type crust rolled out and topped with olive oil, spaghetti sauce, cheese and vegetables like chopped onions and peppers.

We eat cooked oatmeal or eggs for breakfast, instead of cold cereal, instant hot cereal or things like Pop Tarts or breakfast bars. I buy plain yogurt in the largest containers and add fresh fruit, with maybe a spoonful of homemade jam. We make homemade pancakes and waffles on weekends, topped with things like homemade applesauce and cottage cheese, or fresh fruit with a bit of real homemade whipped cream, for a treat.

Never, ever buy sodas or sweetened drinks for your children, since they are not healthy and a needless expense. You can make your own iced tea with tea bags(I like Red Rose the best) and boiling water. Sweeten with a little simple syrup(half and half sugar and water, boiled and cooled) and add some bottled lemon juice, if you like. Store after it is fully cooled in gallon orange juice jugs in the refrigerator. If you wait until it is cool before you refrigerate it, it will not turn cloudy.

When kids don't get snacks and treats all of the time, they appreciate what they do get more. You can give your children turns to pick out something they really want but don't often get.

Eggs are cheap and nutritious, so is peanut butter. Make good use of your food budget and buy the best quality food you can afford, such as whole grain bread instead of the cheapest white bread. Eat less meat and don't buy lunch meat. Tuna salad, egg salad, grilled cheese and peanut butter sandwiches are perfectly fine. Crackers are high in sodium and often sugar. Feed your little kids plain Cheerios, small cubes of cheese and sliced bananas instead.

Make meat loaf and learn how to cut up a whole chicken. Make soup, lots of different kinds. Put fruit in sweet things and vegetables in almost everything else, like omelets and casseroles. Kids who grow up eating lots of vegetables are much less picky and easier to feed. Don't make special meals for picky eaters. I have never known a child who voluntarily starved to death, although I have known lots of anxious mothers were were certain they might. I am ashamed to say that with my first child, I was one of them.

You will need a supportive husband, too. Remember that cheap food is not "bad" food. Lots of times processed or junk foods are the most expensive and the worst for you. Whole, natural foods are the best for your health and for your pocketbook.

He is determined to be a professional ballplayer (yes, I know the stat's of that happening) what can I do to help him nutritionally?

Current Lunch:

Turkey/Roast Beef/ or Peanut Butter Jelly Sandwich on wheat bread
Grapes or Apples (clementines when in season)
Chips or crackers
Cookies
cheese sticks

Obviously, I would love to cut out the chips and perhaps cookies could be replaced with something healhier.... would love suggestions!

Thanks!

Answer
Here is fure tips for eat a quick and healthy lunch for school boy, please see:
Stock up on lunch possibilities when you shop for groceries. Think simple -- a loaf of whole wheat bread and a jar of peanut butter; a package of corn tortillas, a can of black beans, and some fresh tomatoes; frozen veggie burgers, whole grain hamburger buns, and a jar of roasted sweet peppers. Throw together a few of your favorite ingredients, and see what happens!
On days when you buy a sandwich, go to a place that'll make one to order. Ask for turkey or roast beef, extra tomatoes and onions, and only a smidge of mayonnaise. Better yet, opt for mustard. Don't get tuna if it's mixed with lots of mayo. By skipping that eggy, oily spread, you'll cut back the fat and cholesterol significantly.
Prepare lunch items the night before right after dinner. This saves on clean-up time. Store food properly. In the morning pack foods in the lunch box.
Don't forget food safety. If refrigeration is not available, use insulated lunch boxes or bags with frozen ice or gel packs.

What do you like to bring on a road trip with children?

kids lunch bags target image

T3Vs

We are taking a long road trip (about 15 hours drive) with a 4 year old and 1 and a half year old.

Answer
Bring plenty of not messy snacks. So crackers might be good even though they are crumby, but applesauce would be bad because you can't just vacuum up a sauce stain. Fruit is also good. You may also want some meal type things such as lunch meat and bread, because the kids may need to eat a meal 6 times a day and you only want to stop for meals 2 or 3 times a day.

Bring a portable DVD player if one is not attached to your car. Bring a few DVDs from home that you know they love. Also bring a few new ones that you think they will like.

Bring 2 coloring books and 2 packs of crayons. If you make them share, there WILL be fights and thats just not something you want to happen on the road.

Bring each child a blanket and a small pillow for the car as they will fall asleep. One of those neck pillows would be best for the little guy, so his head doesn't flop to the side.

Bring each child a bag of toys from home. Put these toys away a week or two before you leave for the trip, so they will seem new to them in the car. Be sure not to hide their favorite toy though, or you will have melt downs. Chances are if it's their favorite, they will still like it in the car. Buy a few new toys for each child, wrap them up and keep them up by you and hand them out in intervals as melt downs begin.

Remember to save some tricks for the way home too.

For snacks, things like goldfish, teddy grahams, and cheerios can be fun for little ones to eat so they will take longer to eat them. Also things that they can dip like those little crackers with cheese are fun for little guys. They aren't very good for you, but what is one day going to hurt? My kids are very healthy eaters, but while traveling I allow unhealthy snacks and fast food. If you go to a fast food place like McDonald's, get them each a happy meal. This way, they each get a toy. Plus it makes them feel grown up to get their own meal.

Stop at parks along the way every once in a while so the kids can run around. Make sure to have a few things on hand that they can play with outside such as bubbles, a ball, and a frisbee. This would also be a good time to have a picnic. You can pick up things to eat at a grocery store and make a little picnic.

If you have run out of tricks and your kids won't stop crying and complaining, stop at the nearest Walmart or Target, run in while your husband stays with the kids in the car, and grab a toy for each of them. It's cheap and those stores are everywhere. If you see a snack or drink they would like while in there, grab that as well.

Be sure to have plenty of drinks on hand such as 100% juice boxes, small bottles of water, small bottles of milk, and other things.

Remember to bring a cooler for all of your drinks and food. You can either fill it up with ice at the hotels and buy ice at gas stations or buy a plug-in cooler.

I could go on and on, but that pretty much covers your bases. Have fun and good luck!

How do I have a great weekend with my 21 month old son?

john

I am keeping my 21 month old son for the weekend. I am pretty excited about it, but don't really know what to do with him. The weather is going to be horrible. What kinds of things might he like to do? I don't want to ask his mom because I want to seem like I know what I'm doing. Help please!

Answer
If you decide to go somewhere, here are a few options:

1. Indoor playground; your son will love interacting with you and other kids. There may be slides, tunnels, bounce houses, etc. Google what is in your area

2. If you dare, Chuck E Cheese or another child friendly restaurant. It can be very chaotic, but every kid should go there at least once. They do have toddler rides like tunnels and a mini merry-go-round

3. What about the mall? Some malls have activities like train rides, carousels, the little rides in the center of the mall. It's nice just to get out of the house and walk around sometimes.

4. Fast food restaurant with playground; I know, fast food isn' the best option. However, many have healthy options now. For example, substitute the french fries for apple slices. Their playgrounds are a lot of fun and I haven't met a kid that doesn't like it there.

5. A Children's Museum or Aquarium. You really can't go wrong with either. Be sure to take pictures.

6. A pet store. Once again, doesn't cost you anything. However, kids love to go in and look at the fish, dogs, and other animals. We take our daughter there and she stares at the animals forever!

Stay at home options:

1. Bubbles keep my child and my dogs busy for a long time

2. Fingerpaints. Yes, a bit messy. Just make sure you use an apron or trash bag (turned upside down with holes cut out for head and arms) and make a couple pictures. Frame them and keep one for you and give one to his mom to show her you know what you're doing!

3. Puzzles; my daughter is just shy of 2 years old and loves playing with her puzzles. You can get them for about $3 or less at Wal-Mart and Target. It's educational and fun

4. Watch a movie together. Almost anything Disney is good. Don't be surprised if your child doesn't make it through it, but it's a nice activity around naptime. The Incridibles and Lion King is a favorite in my house.

5. Let your son explore in the kitchen. My daughter loves to get out all the pots and pans when I'm cooking and bang on them. Cheap and fun. A little noisy, but it doesn't last all day. I keep her entertained by letting her help me make lunch and she enjoys it

6. Mega blocks or legos. Build together and use your imaginations.

7. Wrestle. It's okay to rough house, just don't let it get out of hand. He will enjoy wrestling with you and you will wear him out. Kids at that age have so much energy!

Where can I buy a small, inexpensive messenger-style bag?

insulated lunch bags walmart on Walmart: Insulated Lunchbag Includes Coupons!
insulated lunch bags walmart image
Q. It need not have several pockets, zippers, and hoopla. Just the bag (big enough to hold a waterbottle, a camera, and my phone), and an adjustable strap. (It's for hiking.) And inexpensive would be nice.

I would rather get suggestions on where to get one, so I don't end up shopping around and finding stuff to buy at every store I visit.

Advice would be appreciated. Thanks!

Answer
J - what about something like an insulated nylon lunch bag?
The padding would protect your camera & phone, and keep the bottle and water on the outside, away from the electronic stuff. Most of them come with adjustable straps.
Another possible solution would be to find a plain black nylon purse. I found one at Kmart, made by American Tourister, which I use for my camera, along with a few odds and ends. Don't worry, it doesn't look girly or anything like that.
Third choice might be to look in the camping, sporting goods, or luggage section of a store. I've seen hip-packs that have buckle straps that could be worn over the shoulder.
Best, and least expensive, place to check out would be your local discount store like Kmart, WalMart or similar mart-mart stores. If there is an Army/Navy surplus store near you, they may have the type of bag you want.

In which section @ Walmart can I find an insulated cooler bag?

I'm looking for a rather large one, though.

I am looking a back pac or back pack that is not to big that a person can keep paper work and cell phone and lunch I would like it to have compartments so sandwiches and lunch doesn't get squished.
Anyone know of any back packs or bags that actually have compartments ??

Answer
L.L. Bean sells a wide variety of back packs. I love the one I have, well designed and good quality material and manufacturing. Wonderful pockets for cell phone, pens, business cards, folders and papers, etc.

The webpage below is one of their lunch bags (insulated too!).

Lands End also sells good luggage and packs.

What bag do you use to tote baby stuff to/from daycare?

XXeviloliv

Does anyone have any recommendations for a good bag to tote my son's stuff to/from daycare? I'm currently using a reusable shopping bag, but it's falling apart.

Generally, I need to be able to fit 4 sippy cups, plus a couple small bowls of food, and a yogurt, plus from time to time a blanket/sheet, package of diapers, and spare outfits.

I'm looking for something possibly insulated, and measuring about 14 by 10 by 5 or so. I want it to be pretty simple, I don't needs lots of different compartments, etc. Anyone have any recommendations?

Answer
Why are you having to carry so much to daycare?
My daughters daycare provides food, bedding (cot and sheet) I only have to bring her blanket on Mondays, they use the same one all week, I take it home, wash it and send it back again on Monday..
Also, my daughter uses one sippy cup a day, they wash them at nap time and we bring diapers as needed, the teachers inform us when they are getting low and a spare outfit stays in all the kids cubbies for accidents...

Anyhow, just get a backpack that comes with an insulated lunch pale...

I used to make a menu, then figure out exactly what I needed for the ingredients, then made a list, and then went to the grocery. I don't need to do that anymore, likely the recipe is in my head, so all I do these days is write down meat loaf, and I know what to buy and have on hand for it.
I include snacks, and especially at this time of the year, I make sure emergency foods are on the list, or already here in the house. And everything I want and need goes onto that list. And yes, I budget a couple bucks extra to take care of forgetfulness. I will bet you all that I get home next week without the Comet cleanser that I need.
We got freezing ice last eve, and we are not going anywhere today, trust me. I have adequate food in the house, I have meat loaf and mashed potatoes leftover for lunch.

And I budget for one treat that was not on the list, in case I find a bargain or a sale that I did not know about. A treat does not have to be something sugar laden, it could be a pound of hamburger and some house brand taco chips for a layered mexican casserole I make.

One way is to not put your groceries on a credit or debit card, to use only cash. and when the cash runs out, no more Ding dongs or chocolate covered donuts. You know how much to take out of the bank after you make your list.
Another way is to take time to look at the ads from all the stores, and buy what is on sale. Buy only items that are on sale, and plan your menu right from the sale ads.

When something you use a lot is on sale, buy more than one. Especially canned goods, since they keep for a long time.

Shop at the discount stores as much as possible, some things stay cheaper than at the regular stores. But watch! Rivers gets a huge sack of generic O cereal for > $3, even the discount grocery could not touch that price. And before Xmas I got cream cheese for $,88, and sour cream and onion dip for that price, too.
And Walmart had hot dogs for $.88 last time I was there.

Some tips. Eliminate soda pop from the menu. Empty calories. Eliminate juice form the menu. Whole fruits are healthier, and full of fiber, and juice does not fill us up as well as whole fruit does.

Forget the high priced snacks and treats . The name brand donuts are how much on sale? Yikes, go get some out of the store's donuts out of the case for way cheaper. And even cheaper? Skip the donuts, and go home and make french toast from your getting stale loaf of bread.
You paid what for a cake from the bakery? Go get some brownie mix on sale, and make a batch of brownies. Even if you frost them, still way cheaper than a bought cake. Save treats like that for BDs and holidays.

Cut chickens up yourself. It is not hard to do, and it saves big bucks when the butcher does not cut it up. Cook from scratch whenever possible, and do not ever buy any kind of pasta in the frozen food aisle, you can make a barrel full of spagetti for what one pkg of frozen pasta costs.

And when temptation strikes, when those Zingers just look so good, I keep walking. And I save my treat for last, and go make a special trip to get it, since it is often ice cream.

Go to a recipe site like allrecipes, and go through the recipes. Look for one you might like, that looks cheap to make.

And use loss leader items like bananas a lot, make banana quick bread, save some to make french toast with, cut nannars up on cereal, or serve nannars and sugar and milk as part of breakfast. . Stores keep prices on certain items cheap so you will come back. Things like generic bread, or those big bags of cereal like Rivers found[this is my fifth one, and it takes weeks for me to eat the whole bag]. Think up uses, look for recipes to utilize the cheap prices.
$.33 bread? Make garlic bread, french toast, toast some hot sandwiches, Mom made stewed tomatoes with torn bread in them. Now is the time to make meat balls with milk bread in them for the freezer, or make bread pudding or stuffing. ,

Is it ok to leave leave turkey sandwich out for 5 hours?

*Rose*

Packing lunch. Turkey sandwich with cheese on bread with no condiments & sealed in zip lock bag. Packaged in a paper bag, packed at 8:30, eaten at 12:30. Is the meat ok enough to eat?

Answer
Yes of course ..if your turkey is not several days old and had been kept refrigerated it will be fine and you certainly can add condiments if if you like, pickles too! Mothers and housewives have been fixing brown bag lunches for children and husbands for many, many years also farm wives fix lunches for their husbands to take to the fields so they do not have to travel back home again. that is how is was when I went to school and also when my kids where in grammar school there was no hot lunch program until they went to high school if they did not like what was on the school menu they took a bagged lunch I also packed lunches for my husband and my son every day to take to work for many years No one ever got sick and we are all very healthy but my kids did get sick a couple of times from the high school hot lunches The key is to make sure all your food is not stale or old .and well wrapped .. Edit~ don't forget contruction workers, carpenters, coal miners, brick and concrete masons and millions of others who work in the outdoor elements and take a steel lunch box and thermos to work everyday

Kid friendly recipes for school lunch?

What are some kid friendly recipes that I could use for my children's lunch boxes? Example Macaroni/pasta salad. I am a picky eater but my children are not. So when it comes to things like macaroni salad I know it has all kinds of veggies which is what I want my kids to have, but have no idea how to make it or what goes in it cuz I don't eat that stuff myself. Although I don't eat some things I still encourage my kids to eat them. This is the first year that we are actually sending them to school with their own lunch. I don't want to send them with pb&j all year and could really use some ideas/ suggestions. I do not mind cooking if I need to. They are not allowed to use a microwave at school, because they are in elementary school. So it goes in the insulated lunch boxes/bags. Thanks in advance to all who help. It is all appreciated.

What are different ideas for packing lunches for my daughter?

Kylee Brui

My daughter just started kindergarten, and has started bring lunches to school. I never brought lunches to school, so I don't have any knowledge on different ideas.
I don't want to send her with just sandwiches, chips, carrots, ect everyday.. Any tips/ideas for different food that will stay good in her lunch bag until they eat? Thanks!

Answer
My kids take a variety of things. Sandwiches (but no peanut butter or any type of nut spread), a fun snack like cookies or chips, and a healthy snack like raisins or carrot sticks. I've also found that you can freeze yogurt or Go-gurt tubes, and pack them frozen. By lunch time, they are melted or semi-melted and still cold for the kids to eat. My daughters also like the mini cups of applesauce, single serve cups of pudding or even bags of dry cereal. A trick I use to keep things cold is to freeze the juice box and pack it frozen. Like the yogurt, it defrosts in the bag, but keeps the rest of the lunch cold. By lunch time, it's perfect to drink. I pack in an insulated, reusable lunch bag.

For sandwiches, the kids like jelly, lunch meats with cheese, grilled cheese served cold, the typical normal foods.

Is $34,060 enough money in a year to raise a family of five people?

lunch bags for kids sale on Quick Lunch Ideas for Kids | A Purpose Driven Home
lunch bags for kids sale image

Nicole

I'm the only spouse working and I have a husband and three kids. Is this enough money a year?

Answer
Depends on the cost of living where you are, and how well you budget. That's an awfully large family for so little income. You will have to strip your spending to the bone. Eliminate all but survival-essentials from your spending. Avoid any debt like Bubonic Plague. Do not use credit cards to eliminate fees & interest.

Cook wholesome, nutritious, cheap meals from scratch - no snacks or prepared foods, maybe one treat a month (popcorn for home-movie night some Saturday). Reduce power consumption, unplug appliances when not in use (not just turn off), turn down the thermostat in winter/up in summer, cook one-dish meals with lid on to reduce temp & cooking time, etc. Brown bag lunch to work. No fast food, coffees, and "little" splurges - they add up too fast to too much. No new clothes - if a critical need, then thrift shop for it.

Clean out the attic, basement, garage - have a garage sale to bring in some extra cash and SAVE it. It is crucial to your survival now that you put 10% of each paycheck into savings immediately. You will have dire need of reserves, so save up! Then pay bills in priority order. What's left is for food, gas to work, etc.

Why isn't hubby working? Hospitalized & totally incapacitated? Or laid off & looking? Unless he is totally incapacitated, he has to do something to start bringing in some income, even if he has gone back to school full-time to train for a better job.

Inflation is galloping away. Do not believe those doctored "official" statistics. You've seen the price of bread rising. That's just the beginnings of the big-time inflation that's gearing up even as you read this. Come spring, you must grow some of your own food. For now, start a windowsill garden of herbs, etc. You must be extremely frugal, and you must save money, and you must get more income. Sounds dire, but things are far worse than you imagine. We are beginning the 2nd wave down of the Greater Depression.

How has the recession affected your family?

Ruth G

So far we have stopped going out to eat, which we used to do often. My husband rides his bike to work, we now shop at garage sales for clothes for the kids, we started planting a vegetable garden in our backyard, and I am now going to start making my own baby food instead of buying it.....those are just some of the ways the recession has affected my family.

Answer
We are feeling a bit of pinch these days as well, here a some things we have done:

stop eating out

stop extra spending

find things that are free for entertainment

searched garage sales, and consignment stores to supplement the new school clothes (50% new 50% used)

for school supplies this year we salvages some of the unused things from last year and washed up old back packs and pencil bags and lunch bags

we have started making our own laundry soap and fabric softener, which is saving us over $400 per year, we are also making our own cleaning supplies, and the benifits is it's all safe and natural and soooooo much cheaper and very easy to do

we have stopped food waste, it all gets eaten, or it's put in the freezer to use at a later date or it's turned into another meal

we are dabbling with a home garden, will do much more next year as this was my first time and wasn't sure I could do it

we have started canning

basically cutting corners where we can, and saving as much as we can

It depends how much you have to invest. One lady opened a roadside sandwich shop selling bagged lunches to construction workers. She was on a highway that had many passing on the way to work and too lazy to make a sandwich so would pay her top dollar for a brown bag lunch every single day.

How do trees contribute to sustainable energy?

A J

How does trees/Timber affect all the natural resources listed below.

The natural resources such as gold, chromium, antimony, coal, iron ore, manganese, nickel, phosphates, tin, uranium, gem diamonds, platinum, copper, vanadium, salt, and natural gas.

Answer
This whole answer is a bit spastic, but bear with me a bit...

First, you need to classify that random list of seemingly unrelated resources into groups, and then determine what all members of a given group have in common in addition to what all the groups have in common, and then determine how trees impact what they have in common.

My thoughts involve the following:

Erosion (all on that list are harvested/mined from the ground, which is of no use if it washes into the ocean, with natural gas being the exception)

Energy (energy is required to harvest/mine all of these things, which is provided by trees in several forms from the machinery that does the harvesting to the paper bag that the construction worker carries his lunch in. Also, all matter is energy. Physics for the win.)

Utilitarian replacement (can wood or products obtained from wood or other resources protected or conserved by the presence of wood be used to replace either the resources themselves or to create a new mechanism that renders those existing resources no longer useful for that specific task?)

Economics (does trade in wood and/or wood products impact trade in any of the listed resources?)

Best gift to buy my best friend who got her 1st teaching job?

quality insulated lunch bag on new cooler bag insulated women lunch bags travel picnic bag solid ...
quality insulated lunch bag image

V

My best friend is set to begin teaching high school Social Studies. This is her 1st teaching job and I want to buy her a congratulatory gift. I was thinking an engraved leather gradebook but I can't find one and a Google search suggests that most grades are kept online now. Any suggestions on gifts or where I can get a leather gradebook would be greatly appreciated!

Answer
Forget the leather gradebook, nice as it sounds. I would venture to say that the majority of schools today all use computerized gradebooks and lesson plan format, not paper.

Does she have her own classroom all day, or does she float to available rooms? What about a nice leather trimmed desk set, or at least the desk blotter for the top of her desk? I always had a cheap one supplied by the school and always wanted a nice one.

For many years, my school always had wonderful teacher lunches with at least five choices. The two years it really went downhill so many of us packed a lot more. What about a quality lunch kit with a nice, insulated bag and reusable containers? That could be a hit!

I had a quality cloth tote bag in a briefcase style (not college backpack). It had a big center storage and some small zip pockets. My sister-in-law had my name embroidered on it and it had some school motif embroideries, too. Used it for years and loved it. Had a strong carry strap as well as handles.

If you visit her at home, does she need anything for her home office? She may need a new bookcase for teacher manuals or home reference books. She will need some storage for home office supplies, a lot more than she would have had in college. Storage tubs? A home file?

How does yogurts bacteria contribute to makeing yogurt?

Danielle

Answer
According to Wiki Answers, "While fermenting, the bacteria produce enzymes which change lactose acid into lactic acid." It also mentions that the growth of bacteria causes the yogurt to thicken. When the yogurt cools, the action stops because bacteria require heat.
http://wiki.answers.com/Q/Describe_the_role_of_bacteria_in_yogurt_making

Btw, I've made yogurt using a small wide mouth thermos. First the milk is heated to a boil, allowed to cool down a little, then a spoonful of good quality plain yogurt from a health food store is added as a starter. It should be as fresh as possible. Then it's poured into the thermos, wrapped in a dish towel, & placed in a nylon insulated lunch bag. In the morning, with the bacteria & a little, there's the yogurt all ready to take for lunch. I like to add cardamom and an Indian spice mixture called garam masala for extra good taste. (Sorry, but I can't remember the exact temperature it's supposed to be before removing from heat & adding the starter.)
Later...Wiki How says 110 degrees F, 43 degrees C.
Keep yogurt at least 90 degrees.

i currently keep my insulin in a mini cooler. it would perfectly fit one can of pop or one can of beer. it has a hard white shell & a cloth outer shell that zips on top. its almost like a lunch box. maybe three inches deep, three inches wide & six inches long. there is no brand name on it & i have been searching the internet trying to find a similar product. mine has torn & i would really like to purchase another to hold the insulin & keep it cool, as well as keep my syringes & meter together. if anyone could help me find one or let me know a company to look into, please let me know. i did not find any on the coleman or igloo sites. thank you!

Pack It insulated lunch bags? Would you buy one?

Christian

There was a commercial just on for this thing called PackIt. It's a lunch cooler that you actually keep in the freezer and then pack your lunch in it. It stays refrigerator cold for up to 10 hours. My son needs a new lunch box for school and it's BOGO free for $19.99 + s/h. It equals out to about $10 per bag which is the same price you would pay for a half decent one at the store. There's no ice packs needed so I'm saving money there too.

I know stuff always sounds better on TV but this actually sounds like a good deal. Opinions?
My son is going into 3rd grade next month. There is no fridge to keep lunches in, they stay in the closet with their coats until lunch time.
I've found really good reviews so far.

Answer
You should do some research online, no doubt someone has bought it and reviewed it.
If I was packing my kids lunch everyday, I would ask the school first if they actually had a fridge. That would be so much more helpful. But if not, go ahead and get it. But ONLY after you've seen reviews about how 'great' it might be. ^_^

Where can i buy all these things in PATTAYA AND BANGKOK ?

cheap lunch bags for women image

Nitika

I want to buy bags , Accessories , clothes .... Where can i get all these hings in Bangkok and pattaya ..Cheap and good places in bangkok and pattaya shop for these ..

Answer
I would shop in Bangkok than Pattaya. There are more stores in Bangkok and more competition ergo probable lower price.

You are looking for women stuff. Like many westernized cultures, most shopping area are focused on sellling to women. Cheap, well since the malls cannot survive on tourists alone.

Cheap shopping
For lots of clothing in one mall: Platinum Mall, 8 floors of clothes, one whole floor for jeans, there are accessories, not sure about bags or purses. I am a guy and only went for the jeans.
http://www.bangkok.com/shopping-mall/platinum.htm

Bags and Accessories
You can find these at most night markets, what happens around dusk you see people starting to start setting up stalls around or near malls. Maybe not in Siam Square but, there are night markets in Huay Khwang, there is a semi permanent market next to Central Lad Prao. Silom/Patong has a night market now. Suan Luan I hear is gone. Alot of vendors set up along Sukhumvit at night near the corner of Asok Road and Sukhumvit. On Sukhumvit from Soi 1 to probably Soi 12 Alot of tourists shop at these places along with the local Thai

Of course there is Chatuchak market on weekends. You will end up spending a day in the sun.

Check out the prices in the Central Malls, you might find something you like.

MBK Center or Mah Boon Khron Center, I find this mall like an indoor Chatuchak. They have indoor stalls, that are now semipermanent on ground floor towards the hotel. Tokyu dept store, which always seems to be having a sale. 4th and 5th floors are electronics 6th and 7th more stalls with shops, lots of odds and ends, tshirts, luggage, toys, silks, etc. Good place for souvenirs.
http://www.bangkok.com/shopping-mall/mbk.htm

Since many malls are open late, shop to your hearts content. On the other side many malls do not open till 11 am. LOL

My suggested shopping planing plan:
Day 1: Start at MBK Center check out the prices at Tokyu Dept Store for comparison on the high side. Have lunch or snack either at the food court or there are restaurants scattered throughout the mall. Go to second floor, exit to the skyway across to the stairwell go to first floor go out catch a taxi to Platinum mall. it might cost 60-100 baht depends on traffic.
Night 1: Go to Silom Patpong, take the skytrain to the Saladaeng station or the subway to Silom Station. Walk along the skytrain line towards the river.
Day 2: Maybe go to MBK Center and visit the other parts of MBK you did not visit ground floor, and above. Or visit Platinum Mall again
Night 2: Freelance, LOL
Day 3 visit the Grand Palace. LOL or the floating market'

The above is focused shopping. There is alot of shopping alll over Bangkok it just depends on what you like and want.

Good luck

Living in the canyon for the summer--being voluntarily homeless?

Q. So I'm seriously debating over whether it is a good or bad idea to go live in the canyon this summer instead of renting an apartment. I love the outdoors and I could save a lot of money by just camping up there. No rent, no utilities, and natural living! I also think it will be a really good learning experience.

My plan so far is to rent a storage unit with electricity for all my crap. That way I could have a mini fridge and a place to plug in an electric griddle if need be. I would still have my car. I am a student at the university so I'd use the gym's showers, campus internet, etc... Then I could rotate through campsites every week so I'm not too suspicious.

I think this town consistently rates one of the top safest towns in America so I really doubt I need to worry about creepers. And the campsites are usually well kept so I feel like large animals will steer clear. And like I said, I still have my car in case of emergency.

Am I forgetting anything? Should I be worried about anything else? Any personal experiences?

Thanks

Answer
In order to obtain a master's degree, I camped in developed campsites for two summers in a van down by the river. Due to all of my papers and an electric-powered non-stick pan for meals, I was glad to have electricity provided in camp. Fees were cheap, but transportation and loss of time were costs. I also paid for one restaurant meal each day due to time constraints, usually a Chinese lunch for economy and healthy components in the meal. Your willingness to move camp weekly is very responsible and will allow you to leave-no-trace. Therefore, you will not be in conflict with law enforcement as long as you are following the local regulations for dispersed camping. In my circumstances, I was not near any lands where dispersed camping was allowed. I figured that my daily living costs were $20 per day.

Today, I could have adequate battery storage to run a laptop computer between charging at school. I would use propane-butane canisters for cooking now. During my education, internet was not a source of research materials. I slept comfortably in a +15 degree sleeping bag, especially because the van retained some heat. I did shower and shave in the university gym early each morning without ever being challenged. During the past decade I have never applied any of my university education from three degrees, five certifications, and spent two decades being either underemployed or moving every few years for career changes. Of course, I answer questions, write articles and books, but do not recover the costs of outdoor gear or transportation from my work.

I have known a few homeless men. One froze to death in winter on a below-zero night where alcohol was involved. Another beat a fellow homeless man to death at his campsite and is serving a sentence for murder. A woman was killed by her homeless man companion associated with a knife-stabbing during an alcoholic binge in their campsite. Several young men have frozen to death in snowdrifts near me due to being disoriented on their way homes from bars. No one ever had a conflict with a wild animal, except one man stored canned goods in his tent that were eaten by a black bear when he was away from his dispersed camp near town. I attribute that problem as stupidity of the homeless man and proximity to a community that trains bears to eat refuse. I have never had any encounter with a bear in my remote wilderness dispersed camps. Human communities educate bears badly and help create alienated homeless men. Military veterans, alcoholics, and mentally-ill men are typically homeless and estranged from "civilization." Perhaps, you will be able to write a balanced thesis on homelessness in American after you get a taste of it.

Does anyone know of any stores in Toronto that would carry lunch bags or the names of companies that make them? Thanks!

Answer
you can get one every where, in terms of which ones are better, keep in mind that you get what you pay for, but more importantly if you want to keep your lunch cold then freeze your juice boxes, or get a ice pack. this will keep your lunch colder longer.
For places to go try:
Shoppers drug mart
Loblaws
Pharma Plus
Wallmart
Zellers
Sears
Bay
Dominion
Good luck and shop around its your money and well spend it well instead of wishing you had a different one or spending it over and over.

Can I bring cottage cheese in my school lunch?

Tally

I pack my lunch for school and am wondering if it's safe to pack cottage cheese. Do I need an ice pack? How long will it keep in my lunch bag?

Answer
You can take cottage cheese in your lunch.

Put it in a Tupperware type container with a snap on lid. I like my cottage COLD, so I like to freeze two zip lock bags or 2 small containers with lids, (leave room for the ice to expand) then put lids on your ice containers and they are ready to be used to keep your cottage cheese cold.

I put the ice on each side of my cottage cheese then wrap in a small ice cheese ice in a small towel. Put in your lunch sack.
It's better if you buy you one of those flexible small insulated lunch boxes.

Good Luck.

PS. As you know, if you ever find your cottage cheese is hot, don't eat it.
