AF Wifey

My husband and I are trying to cut back on spending so I am now packing his lunches. I feel awful, everyday its either left overs or a ham sandwich, I need some good ideas that are not to time consuming to make!

Answer
The possibilities are endless.

There is nothing wrong with left overs and or cold cuts.

What I do is this: On the weekend, I'll get 1/4 lb of assorted cold cuts. For example:

1/4 lb salami
1/4 lb provolone plus 1/4 lb of another cheese
1/4 lb ham
1/4 lb chicken or turkey breast

I also purchase 6 onion rolls in a bag and the tortillas wraps that are 8''.

Other weeks I''ll get whole wheat bread / rye bread or other bread, and sometimes, I'll purchase an Italian or French long baquette.

I always try to so something different week to week on the bread and if certain breads are on sale, I buy them, take them home, wrap them in foil & freeze them.

BTW - a good secret is to alwyas have those small salt & pepper packets you get from fast food places. :-)

Here is a few ideas.

#1 - Tripple decker:
Toast 3 pieces of bread and put his favorite mayo/mustard on it.

One of the layers will have some cold cut & cheese and the second layer will have lettuce & tomato or cuccumber... what ever he likes.

Add a hard boiled egg along with the salt & pepper packets.

1 small bag of chips and 1 or 2 cookies.

#2 Tortilla wrap

Put this favorite mayo/mustard, lettuce, tomatoes, sliced thin onions, and roll it up.

Cut it in half.

In a small container some home made potato or mac salad... you can make this on the weekend so it's ready for the week day lunches.

A brownie or a few cookies.

#3 Italian hogie

Cut an Italian or French baquette in half & toast it.

Place his favorite cold cuts & cheeses, with shreaded lettuce & tomato and if he likes peppers, add a few slices of peppers on top

A pinch of oregano & pepper

Then gently sprinkle some Italian dressing on it and that's it.

If he likes fruit, make him a small fruit salad but use fruits that will not turn brown, such as strawberrys, blue berrys, UNPEELED banana, melon, honeydew, watermelon.... etc..

#4 - Nothing states that you cannot have breakfast for "lunch".

3 scrambled eggs with grilled ham, buttered toast and home fries. The grilled ham & home fries can be prepared on Sunday. Make sure you add the salt & pepper packets as well as ketchup.

Add an apple or some other fresh fruit such as melon.

# 5 - Grilled ham & cheese with a small Glad container of soup

Some cookies or brownies and some fresh fruit.

# 6 -

In a Glad or plastic container. Give him a few pieces of toasted bread or roll with butter. Add to the lunch container some cold cuts, cheese, tomato wedges, pickelts, some olives & 2 hard boiled eggs.

Again, some cookies & fresh fruit.

I can think of more, but I'm tired of typing....

Where can I purchase a Lean Cuisine Designer Lunch Bag?

magsgurlie

Does any one know where I can purchase a Lean Cuisine Designer Lunch Bag? They are all sold out on the Lean Cuisine web site as quantities are limited. Proceeds go to a good cause ($5 is donated to breast cancer research), but they are also very cute. I have already checked ebay and no luck. Thanks in advance for your replies.

Answer
Check your yellow pages or local phone book, for Weight Watchers Locations, sometimes these establishments will carry this sort of promotional item, because it is for a good cause.

Also, have you checked any of the
breast cancer research sites? They may have a link for the sales of the item you're looking for.

cheers!

those are adorable. i would go for something a bit smaller to stick in your backpack. if you really want to use if for your lunch its fine but it would be so much cute as like a relay makeup/tolitries/women products stuff. but its cute has a lunch bag. :]]

Which one is cutest (links)?

Q. I'm 15, a girl, and going to be in 10th grade. Used to be home schooled, now going to public school. My mom says I have to get one of these lunch bags to keep my lunch cold so even if the bag is dorky, tell me which one is the least dorky and the cutest. I don't want to get mad fun of for it. Thanks! My backpack is dark yellow by the way if it's supposed to match or something hah. I really have no idea. Okay here are the links:

Do you reccomend taking 1 year old for vaction to Mexico for 7 days?

large insulated lunch bag kids on Insulated Lunch Bags - Kids Lunch Bags
large insulated lunch bag kids image

Mommy of 2

We are going for vaction to Cancun Mexico, middle of december 2009 and we already ordered tickets with hotel for us and our 14 month old daughter. Now, we are still deciding if we should take her. For people who took their 1 year olds for vacation, can you tell me how hard it would be? It's a 3 and half hour flight (direct flight), we are staying for 7 days. How hard was it to adjust to the hotel room, ect. Please give me any tips you have. (Time difference is 1 hour, not too bad) If it's a good idea to take her, will she have fun or will it be too hard for her and for us... What you do reccomend taking for her?
Thanks so much.
It's me my hubby going and 4 other couples :)

Answer
We took our 10month old to Mexico with us it was totally safe and pretty fun we went last apr at the hype of swine flu! None of us got anything.

We also went to Cancun; we live in Michigan so it was about 3 and half hour flight. Just make sure to bring snacks for your child in case your flight is delayed because in flight they donât really have toddler friendly snacks.

We spend most of our time in the pools just be sure to bring the sun screen because you will need it. we used water babies and it was get he never burned he was all pasty looking and most of the people asked what we were using cause they got burnt!

Bring a floaty with you that you can blow up while there. We use one of those spring floats that he just sat in and he loved it. I was at the swim up bar with baby in tow.

There is a wal mart in downtown Cancun if you need to stop and get supplies like diapers, meals, cereals, wipes, etc. I didnât pack any of that because you get charge so much for bags and over weight limits from the airlines and walmart there sells everything. We rented a car down there and it was really cheap but you can also rent a cab too. Remember to pack your Car seat because cabs down there donât have those things. You can gate check the car seat and stroller for no additional cost to you; unlike your luggage.

Things to pack, motrin, Tylenol, sippy cup/bottles, diapers/wipes while in flight, snack foods, milk/formula, jars of food/Gerber Graduates pick upâs (if needed), stroller, car seat, blanket, clothes, float for the pool, sun screen, toys, etc. . .

The airlines will allow you to pack any amount (with in reason) of liquids or solids for the child in your carry-on diaper bag. The only thing I recommend is if you use formula pre mix it or use the liquid kind because they donât like for you to bring bottle water thru the checkpoints; however, you can purchase it once past if you need water. I just used (4) small 6oz Medela bottles and used an ice pack to keep cold in a small insulated lunch bag unless we got then and then wet to walmart to get what I need. They sell everything there that we have here just all in Spanish. Expect to pay pretty much the same amount as here for diapers. If you get them at the resort expect to pay lot.

Some of the resorts offer shuttle services to walmart so because to ask.

Luggage: I used a small carry on size suitcase for his clothes that way I didnât pay the extra amount for another bag of checked luggage and a large diaper bag. Strollers and car seats can be gate checked so there is NO fee for bring those.

We took a few day trips to Xcaret. That was really fun; however, it was soooo hot. Remember to pack some biodegradable sunscreen for that place or you can purchase it there for $$$$. We used our stroller there; however, it was so hot and he was sweaty we were only there a few hours. So if she can walk I would recommend that with a leash because there are uneven walkways n cliffs or the use of a backpack.

Toddlers and babies usually eat free off your plate at most of the on resort restaurants.
Remember to call the resort to reserve a crib which they all pretty much offer for free. Just pack a sheet if you like.
I packed two small toys; I packed his vtech laptop and a rolly ball.

We also went in to the gulf and he loved it the resort we went too had a play center for kid too! We were at the Royal sands
Email me if you want more information.

Just be sure you have your passport for her you will need that to leave the country. Email me if you need more information. Enjoy have fun we really liked it there.

If you are staying at any of the larger resorts you can be sure to drink the water it is all purified and taste pretty close to home. The only time I would not drink the water or ice is if you are going to a small restaurant out side the city but you can always ask if there water is purified. My husband, son and I didnât have any diarrhea or stomach issues.

BIG FLYS cannot eat through clothes in garage, right? HOW DO I GET RID OF ALL THE FLYS?

I have TONS of big black flys in my garage, as well as tons of clothes I have ready for rummage sale. They can't eat through clothes, right? HOW DO I GET RID OF ALL THE FLYS?
THEY CAN"T EAT THROUGH CLOTHES THOUGH< RIGHT? If it is a carcuss in there, it's gonna be HARD to find!
LMAO to the catholic priest! LOL

Answer
Ask a Catholic Priest to perform an exorcism on your garage. (just kidding)

Seriously though, there's probably a source that's attracting them to your garage. So until you find that source, no matter how many flies you exterminate, more of them will keep returning to your garage.

HERE'S A LIST OF POSSIBLE SOURCES:

* Dead Critter carcass that hid itself somewhere before it died.
* A bag of perishable groceries that you forgot to bring into the house.
* Leftovers from a bag of lunch gone rotten that you forgot to bring back in when you got home from work.
* If you have an old refrigerator or freezer in your garage, it might not be draining water from the auto-defrost cycle properly and settling somewhere hidden on the floor of the garage.
* A rotten smelling floor drain.

I think it's most likely something rotten. That's what flies like. Sometimes you can't always smell anything because of a draft that keeps the air around it from moving to the areas you typically walk through. Sniff around outside of your garage to try to locate where the flies are noticing it. This might clue you in better to where the source is coming from.

How To Spend Less At The Grocery Store, and make cheaper meals?

Mom to Bel

Just looking for some advice on some good cheap meals to make. My husband and I are pretty tight on money lately, and i have two little kids to feed as well. every time i go to the store and buy fo od, i always end up spending way more than i expect. I'm kinda and impulse shopper, when it comes to food. lol. anyway, i'm making a list of only essential foods and ingredients i need. trying to make decent meals for as cheap as possible. and meat is so expensive. any tips. thanks.

Answer
I used to make a menu, then figure out exactly what I needed for the ingredients, then made a list, and then went to the grocery. I don't need to do that anymore, likely the recipe is in my head, so all I do these days is write down meat loaf, and I know what to buy and have on hand for it.
I include snacks, and especially at this time of the year, I make sure emergency foods are on the list, or already here in the house. And everything I want and need goes onto that list. And yes, I budget a couple bucks extra to take care of forgetfulness. I will bet you all that I get home next week without the Comet cleanser that I need.
We got freezing ice last eve, and we are not going anywhere today, trust me. I have adequate food in the house, I have meat loaf and mashed potatoes leftover for lunch.

And I budget for one treat that was not on the list, in case I find a bargain or a sale that I did not know about. A treat does not have to be something sugar laden, it could be a pound of hamburger and some house brand taco chips for a layered mexican casserole I make.

One way is to not put your groceries on a credit or debit card, to use only cash. and when the cash runs out, no more Ding dongs or chocolate covered donuts. You know how much to take out of the bank after you make your list.
Another way is to take time to look at the ads from all the stores, and buy what is on sale. Buy only items that are on sale, and plan your menu right from the sale ads.

When something you use a lot is on sale, buy more than one. Especially canned goods, since they keep for a long time.

Shop at the discount stores as much as possible, some things stay cheaper than at the regular stores. But watch! Rivers gets a huge sack of generic O cereal for > $3, even the discount grocery could not touch that price. And before Xmas I got cream cheese for $,88, and sour cream and onion dip for that price, too.
And Walmart had hot dogs for $.88 last time I was there.

Some tips. Eliminate soda pop from the menu. Empty calories. Eliminate juice form the menu. Whole fruits are healthier, and full of fiber, and juice does not fill us up as well as whole fruit does.

Forget the high priced snacks and treats . The name brand donuts are how much on sale? Yikes, go get some out of the store's donuts out of the case for way cheaper. And even cheaper? Skip the donuts, and go home and make french toast from your getting stale loaf of bread.
You paid what for a cake from the bakery? Go get some brownie mix on sale, and make a batch of brownies. Even if you frost them, still way cheaper than a bought cake. Save treats like that for BDs and holidays.

Cut chickens up yourself. It is not hard to do, and it saves big bucks when the butcher does not cut it up. Cook from scratch whenever possible, and do not ever buy any kind of pasta in the frozen food aisle, you can make a barrel full of spagetti for what one pkg of frozen pasta costs.

And when temptation strikes, when those Zingers just look so good, I keep walking. And I save my treat for last, and go make a special trip to get it, since it is often ice cream.

Go to a recipe site like allrecipes, and go through the recipes. Look for one you might like, that looks cheap to make.

And use loss leader items like bananas a lot, make banana quick bread, save some to make french toast with, cut nannars up on cereal, or serve nannars and sugar and milk as part of breakfast. . Stores keep prices on certain items cheap so you will come back. Things like generic bread, or those big bags of cereal like Rivers found[this is my fifth one, and it takes weeks for me to eat the whole bag]. Think up uses, look for recipes to utilize the cheap prices.
$.33 bread? Make garlic bread, french toast, toast some hot sandwiches, Mom made stewed tomatoes with torn bread in them. Now is the time to make meat balls with milk bread in them for the freezer, or make bread pudding or stuffing. ,

I want to start taking salads to work for lunch but there aren't any refrigerators to put my food in. How would I be able to keep a salad fresh?

Answer
blue ice jel packs!! I use these a lot, and keep twice as many as I need in the freezer.

Pack your salad with dressing on bottom in quart canning jars, keep in fridge and grab as needed.

slip them and the gel packs into insulated bags and go!

What are some healthy foods I can make for lunch that don't need refrigeration?

Q. I have just started a new job, and my office does not have a refrigerator in it, but it does have a microwave. What can I make for lunch that is healthy and doesn't need to be refrigerated?

Answer
Health Choice makes these unrefrigerated "meals" that you just add hot water (or microwave - either one). My daughter eats them in dorms and says some of them are pretty good. They are in the pasta isle usually. Then, there are goes cans of tuna / chicken salad and they don't need refrigeration. Also, believe it or not - and not sure how they taste - there's that unrefrigerated milk like they sell in Starbucks so there's some milk if you want it to make like cream soup. Oh, and those "Soup at Hands" are pretty good.

You could always go out and but an insulated lunch bag and put some of that blue ice in it. Pretend you're a construction worker - ha ha....sorry I am a construction worker so I shouldn't laugh!

Well, good luck - I'd say go get a lunch bag and blue ice then you can bring leftovers or salads.

Suggestions on how to stay healthy with 2 jobs?!?

reusable lunch bags for women image

Bre

I am a college student out for the summer and working two jobs. (I work as a receptionist in the morning 8am-4pm and I am a sales associate at a retail store from 5-10)
I'm finding myself getting off my first job and constantly going to McDonalds, on my lunch breaks Iâm running to the nearest fast food store and I'm eating very unhealthy foods!
Any suggestions on how to stay healthy (and not spend a lot of money)with my busy schedule since I donât have time to exercise or prepare a really healthy lunch!

ps- any foods I can store in my car so on those days where I may not have time to go fast-food I can snack on whatâs it my car?

Answer
You sound like a busy woman! A few quick things that I like to eat.... South Beach Diet bars, Kashi granola bars, apples, bananas, or any fresh fruit, baby carrots, microwave popcorn (the 94% fat free kind), canned fruit in individual serving sizes, those bagged salads with some tuna or chicken breast on top, precooked chicken breast strips you can find by the lunch meat, turkey/ham/deli roast beef sandwich, even an occasional peanut butter sandwich, tuna salad with fat free mayo on crackers (they even have some in packages you could probably stick in your car), hard-boiled eggs, baked potato (you can microwave to save on time), protein shakes (i put the powder in my container and pick up an individual carton of fat-free milk if I'm on the go), healthy cereal (which you can eat any time of day), instant oatmeal, salsa and a small serving of baked chips.

I would definitely invest in some of those disposable or reusable "Gladware" type of containers, I pack up a container with cereal in the morning and some cut up vegetables for a mid-afternoon snack, or bring some leftovers from the night before to heat up.

If you're like me and hate getting up in the morning, prepare this quickly at night before going to bed and you'll be all set when it's time to run out the door. Make sure the healthy foods are available at home by finding time for a quick trip to the grocery store once a week, you can use one of your breaks at work to write yourself a list to get in and out quickly. It is a little preparation but definitely worth it. If you wake up late and find nothing in the fridge, no containers, no bread for a sandwich, etc., then it will probably be off to McDonalds!

You can do these things and actually save money compared to going to the fast food places. I originally started doing some of this to save money and then got into the health benefits as well.

Also, make sure to have breakfast, even if it's a granola bar and some fruit in the car on the way to work, it really helps my metabolism get going and helps me to not be so starving at lunch that I crave the fast food.

If you do find yourself at a fast food place, choose carefully. Ask to take a look at their nutritional information and think about it! Eat the low-fat dressing on your salad or ask for the fruit option instead of french fries if they have it. Avoid a lot of the mayo-type sauces and the non-diet sodas. I set myself a guideline that I could eat out for lunch once a week with friends/coworkers, the rest of the time I would bring my food.

For exercise, you could take some of your breaks from work and spend them walking, which could be some much-needed stress relief in the middle of the day.

Good luck!

I am trying to get together a weekly menu so it's easier when I go to the grocery store. I would like healthy ideas, but I am not adverse to the ocassional bag of chips! Thanks for your help!

I should also include that I am making lunch for a kindergartener.

Answer
This is our lunch box menu for the week. My daughter just started first grade.

Monday- Salad on a pita with homemade ranch dressing, peanuts and a fruit salad and chocolate silk.

Tuesday- Whole wheat mini bagel with dairy free cream cheese, fruit salad, carrots and ranch dressing. Chocolate silk

Wednesday- Whole wheat tortilla with refried beans, dairy free sour cream, and salsa, apple slices, a cucumber chain with ranch, and silk

Thursday- PB&J shapes, carrots and ranch, small banana, silk

Friday- Baked potato with chili and dairy free sour cream, fruit salad, peas and corn, silk.

Her snack is usually Garden veggie hummus with whole wheat bagel chips, and a juice

Tuesdays and thursdays are usually lighter (or just faster to make) because I have class and leave the house by 6:30.

In her thermos she also takes; Hot dogs and beans, lentil soup, veggie soup, or vegan hot chocolate (dairy free).

What a good lunch to pack for a preschooler other than sandwiches?

My daughter's school doesn't refrigerate or microwave lunches.
DH has banned lunchables of any kind.

Answer
Here's a few ideas:

BOLOGNA BOAT

Bologna may not be included on most parents' Top Five Sandwich lists, but children recognize the true worth of this lunchtime standby. This version--which comes dressed as a hot dog--tastes great accompanied by a few potato chips and a pickle.

1 tsp. mustard
1 slice bologna (or turkey bologna)
1 slice American cheese
1 hot dog bun

Spread the mustard onto the slice of bologna. Top with a slice of cheese and roll them together. Place the roll in the hot dog bun and wrap it in aluminum foil. Makes 1 serving.

Tuck these in a lunch box:
⢠Vegetable sticks with a small container of salad dressing for dipping

⢠Fresh fruit

⢠Pretzels

⢠Celery sticks filled with cream cheese or peanut butter and raisins

⢠Fruit yogurt

⢠Pudding

⢠Crackers--plain or with peanut butter or cheese

⢠Cheese sticks

⢠Graham crackers

⢠Fortune cookies

⢠Dried fruit

⢠Fruit leather

⢠Nuts

⢠Tortilla chips with a small jar of salsa

⢠Small bags of popcorn

⢠Stickers

⢠A note from you

PIZZA IN A PITA

Few foods have a higher lunchtime approval rating than pizza. This one, with the main attractions packed inside pita bread, can be served plain for finicky types or loaded with extras, such as pepperoni, olives, or peppers, for daredevils.

Ingredients

1 whole-wheat pita bread
1/4 cup grated mozzarella cheese
2 tbsp. pizza or tomato sauce

Directions

Preheat the oven or toaster oven to 350 degrees. Split the pita bread halfway around the edge and spoon in the cheese, tomato sauce, and any toppings. Wrap the pita in aluminum foil and bake for 7 to 10 minutes or until the cheese melts. Makes 1 serving.

GOBBLING GRANOLA

Add crunch and fiber to your child's lunch by including a small bag of this nutty snack mix. This granola also makes a great after-school treat, especially when blended in with vanilla yogurt.
1/4 cup butter
1/3 cup firmly packed brown sugar
2 1/2 cups uncooked, rolled oats
1/4 cup slivered almonds
1/4 cup chopped walnuts
1/2 cup raisins
1/3 cup chopped dates
1/3 cup chopped dried apricots
1/3 cup chocolate chips

Preheat the oven to 350 degrees. Melt the butter in a 15-by-10-inch jelly roll pan. Stir in the brown sugar until combined. Stir in the oats, almonds and walnuts. Spread the mixture in an even layer in the pan.

Bake the granola for 12 to 15 minutes or until it is golden brown, stirring twice during the baking process. Transfer the pan to a wire rack and cool. When the mixture is completely cool, stir in the raisins, dates, apricots and chocolate chips.

Store it in an airtight container. Makes about 5 1/2 cups.

MUNCH BUNCH

This versatile snack can pinch-hit as either a crunchy dessert or a sweet midafternoon treat. You and your child can embellish the basic recipe by mixing in other ingredients you happen to have on hand, such as cereals, dried apricots, banana chips, nuts, chocolate and carob chips, or miniature marshmallows.

2 cups oat- or wheat-square cereal
1/2 cup M&M's (plain or peanut)
1/2 cup raisins
1/2 cup shredded coconut

In a large bowl or plastic bag, toss all of the ingredients together. Pack 1 1/2-cup portions in individual containers or plastic bags. Makes about 3 1/2 cups.

CHICKEN YUMSTICKS

These drumsticks, which have a flavorful coating of spiced bread crumbs and grated Parmesan cheese, are perfect lunch-box finger food. You can make sure the chicken stays cold until lunchtime rolls around by packing it with a frozen juice box or a freezer "blue ice."

Ingredients

1/3 cup Italian-style bread crumbs
1/3 cup grated Parmesan cheese
1/8 tsp. black pepper
8 chicken drumsticks
1/3 cup plain yogurt

Directions

Preheat the oven to 375 degrees and lightly butter a baking sheet. In a shallow dish or pie plate, mix together the bread crumbs, Parmesan cheese and pepper.

Using a pastry brush, carefully coat each drumstick with the plain yogurt. Next, roll the drumsticks in the bread crumb mixture until evenly coated. Arrange the drumsticks on the prepared sheet.

Bake for about 60 minutes or until the juices run clear when the meat is pierced with a fork.

Cover the drumsticks with aluminum foil or plastic wrap and refrigerate for up to 2 days. Makes 8 drumsticks.

VERY VEGGIE SOUP

If you make up a batch of this hearty soup on Sunday afternoon for an end-of-the-weekend supper, you will be able to reheat it for your kids' lunch thermoses throughout the week. The flavor of the soup gets better as it ages for up to a week in the refrigerator.

Ingredients

1 tbsp. olive or vegetable oil
2 large celery stalks, diced
2 large carrots, diced
1 large onion, diced
1 can (46 oz.) beef broth
2 cups water
1 can (28 oz.) whole peeled tomatoes, chopped
2 medium potatoes, peeled and diced
1/2 small head of cabbage, shredded
1 package (9 oz.) frozen cut green beans
2 medium zucchini, diced
1 can (16 oz.) red kidney or white cannellini beans, drained
1 1/2 cups pasta in a kid-friendly shape
Salt and black pepper to taste
Grated Parmesan or Romano cheese

Directions

In a large, heavy soup pot, heat the oil over medium-high heat. Add the celery, carrots, and onion. Cook, stirring frequently for 7 to 10 minutes or until the vegetables are tender. Add the broth, water, tomatoes, potatoes, cabbage, and green beans. Cover and simmer for 1 hour, stirring occasionally. Add the zucchini, beans, and pasta.

Simmer for 15 to 20 minutes longer, or until the pasta is tender. Season with salt and pepper and serve. Garnish with the grated cheese. Makes about 10 servings.

How do you freeze fresh spinach?

kids lunch bag plus on Built-NY-gourmet-getaway-R-4
kids lunch bag plus image

NEWTOME

It's no surprise that when fresh, pre-packaged spinach returned to our grocer's shelves, it's only a buck for a huge bag! My hubby bought 2 bags but we just had a dish with spinach in it for dinner, plus leftovers! I doubt I'll use it before it spoils and it's only 2 bucks, but I don't want to see it go it waste! What's the best way to freeze fresh spinach?

Answer
OK....I never would have blanched spinach but I read several people here saying they do it. So I am changing my post since I am not an expert...just speaking of my own experience. Personally, I think spinach cooks so fast when you throw it in a dish that no blanching is needed, but for $2 I would say, toss it in the freezer as it!

You will never be able to use it as fresh after you freeze it but it goes great in anything. Add the whole bag to a soup and freeze the soup, make a quiche/fritatta dish where you beat 8 eggs, add a little milk or cream, add a cup or two of shreaded cheese, some chopped ham maybe, and all the spinach. Bake it in a pie tin with no crust @ 350 F for about 25 minutes. It'll puff way up and then settle back down. You can then cut it in wedges and freeze the wedges for a fast breakfast or lunch.

Or toss the spinach into a pot of pasta sauce and then freeze it.

Or eat it mixed with salad greens uncooked. My kids won't eat regular lettuce unless there is spinach mixed in.

If you just freeze it as is, you can also use it in any cooked dish later on.

How do you get your child to conform to mealtimes?

scarlet_sa

My son is 2 and is used to grazing. He dictates when he is hungry, so we end up making meals for him anytime and wherever. It would be a great stress release if he wasn't picking off of plates or having us make meals late at night. My main question: Is it too barbaric to make him wait to the next meal/snack if he decides not to eat? I'm trying to think of the best strategy to get him to be nutritionally fulfilled and get him in the swing of breakfast/lunch/dinner times...

Answer
I promise that he will outgrow this eventually. He's still very young and growing very quickly, so he needs to eat often. Plus, he has a small tummy, so he can't always eat a large amount at one time. I'd rather have him decide when he's hungry and when he's not so that he can follow his body's cues.

That being said, you don't have to prepare a whole meal for him whenever he's hungry. Serve each meal at the normal mealtime, and try to keep him from snacking for at least 60 minutes before the meal. If he complains that he's truly starving, you can offer a light snack (a box of raisins, a banana, some blueberries, a bit of cheese, etc.) to tide him over.

My middle child was a definite grazer, and it took her probably until age 3 before she really settled into eating full meals at mealtimes. We just learned to go with it as best we could. At dinner, we learned that if we just left her food on the table, she'd often come back to it right as we were starting to clear the dishes. So, we'd go ahead and let her eat -- she was still eating the same food, just later than the rest of us. She's now 5, and she eats perfectly fine at meals, but she still tends to nibble throughout the day whenever she can, and she's the tallest and thinnest of my three kids. I think it's just her nature, and I'd really rather have her continue to follow her body's cues.

All of my children tended to have 3 meals and 3 snacks a day as toddlers --
breakfast around 7:30
snack around 9-10:00
lunch around 12:00
snack around 2-3:00
dinner at 6pm
small snack right before bed at 8pm (banana, slice of cheese, a couple crackers, etc.)

By age 3, they didn't need the nighttime snack anymore, but still had a mid-morning and mid-afternoon snack. My oldest daughter is in 1st grade, and they're still allowed to nibble something from their lunch bag during their morning recess, so she still often eats 2 snacks per day as well.

As for nutrition, try to look at your son's diet over the course of several days, not just a single day. Our pediatrician told us that at one point, and it really makes sense for toddlers. I know there were days that my kids maybe wouldn't eat a single vegetable, but they'd make up for it by wolfing down multiple servings of veggies at a single meal on another day. As long as you continue to offer a variety of healthy foods for meals and snacks, it all balances out.

Are there any alternatives to having a screw top bottle.?

I recently went to my school and they said that screw top bottles are not allowed. Which most of thermos and bottles have screw tops. Does anyone have any ideas of what I should use instead of screw top bottles. I really like to keep foods hot and drinks cold. I would like it if someone could find bottles or thermoses without screw tops. I would really appreciate that!
Thanks!

Answer
That limits the options quite a bit. Some models I can suggest are:

For FOOD:

Option 1: Zojirushi type thermos bento lunch jars.

http://www.zappos.com/zojirushi-classic-bento-vacuum-lunch-jar-ultra-black?channel=126&si7757425=&mr:referralID=NA&mr:trackingCode=138A9AB8-71EE-DF11-8F9A-001B2163195C

The top 2 inner containers have plastic lids but the bottom one has a screw lid. The screw lid is the smallest container so you may be able to do without.

-- edit: I just realised the middle, large one is also a screw top (only a quarter turn). But you can still look through their range to find a non-screw top combination. --end edit

It does keep food warm/hot but you need to prep them first (putting very hot water in, then removing them before putting your foods that you want to keep hot).

The outer container is double-walled. All these items come in an insulated bag with eating implements (which vary depending on the model you buy). There are different configurations, colors and sizes that you can choose from.

I have two of these (similar to those in the above website but with gold-colored bags) and they do keep food reasonably warm/hot. Zojirushi often change the color scheme and bag designs.

Other versions (targeted at girls/women):
http://www.casa.com/p/zojirushi-mini-bento-stainless-lunch-jar-white-273582

Option 2: Heated thermos (Fuloon thermos lunch jar)

This has a power supply to warm your food at work/school (if you have access to power). I do not have this, so cannot give you an evaluation. It does look very useful though.

http://www.amazon.co.uk/Fuloon-Stainless-Thermal-Layers-Design/dp/B007PN2Z9E/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1342339770&sr=8-1

For WATER/DRINKS (non-fizzy):

If you only want them cold, you can get Tupperware tumblers called Handoliers or Thirstbreak Tumblers with plastic lids like this:

http://www.amazon.com/s/ref=nb_sb_noss?url=search-alias%3Dgarden&field-keywords=handolier

http://www.amazon.com/Set-Tupperware-Tumblers-Seals-Colors/dp/B004FDDVZE/ref=sr_1_23?s=home-garden&ie=UTF8&qid=1342341109&sr=1-23&keywords=tumblers++tupperware

You really need insulation through the use of an insulation bag: keeps the cold and condensation droplets in.

You can also add reuseable ice to your tumbler; these do not dilute your drink and is ... reuseable.

Other accessories: ice pucks.

Can you make me a packing list?

I am a 14 year old girl, going to Brazil for a year. The temperatures where I'm going are mostly between 60-100^F. Can you make me a detailed packing list, please!!??

Is $34,060 enough money in a year to raise a family of five people?

kids lunch bag sale on nylon kids animal insulated lunch bag / China Cooler Bags for sale
kids lunch bag sale image

Nicole

I'm the only spouse working and I have a husband and three kids. Is this enough money a year?

Answer
Depends on the cost of living where you are, and how well you budget. That's an awfully large family for so little income. You will have to strip your spending to the bone. Eliminate all but survival-essentials from your spending. Avoid any debt like Bubonic Plague. Do not use credit cards to eliminate fees & interest.

Cook wholesome, nutritious, cheap meals from scratch - no snacks or prepared foods, maybe one treat a month (popcorn for home-movie night some Saturday). Reduce power consumption, unplug appliances when not in use (not just turn off), turn down the thermostat in winter/up in summer, cook one-dish meals with lid on to reduce temp & cooking time, etc. Brown bag lunch to work. No fast food, coffees, and "little" splurges - they add up too fast to too much. No new clothes - if a critical need, then thrift shop for it.

Clean out the attic, basement, garage - have a garage sale to bring in some extra cash and SAVE it. It is crucial to your survival now that you put 10% of each paycheck into savings immediately. You will have dire need of reserves, so save up! Then pay bills in priority order. What's left is for food, gas to work, etc.

Why isn't hubby working? Hospitalized & totally incapacitated? Or laid off & looking? Unless he is totally incapacitated, he has to do something to start bringing in some income, even if he has gone back to school full-time to train for a better job.

Inflation is galloping away. Do not believe those doctored "official" statistics. You've seen the price of bread rising. That's just the beginnings of the big-time inflation that's gearing up even as you read this. Come spring, you must grow some of your own food. For now, start a windowsill garden of herbs, etc. You must be extremely frugal, and you must save money, and you must get more income. Sounds dire, but things are far worse than you imagine. We are beginning the 2nd wave down of the Greater Depression.

How has the recession affected your family?

Ruth G

So far we have stopped going out to eat, which we used to do often. My husband rides his bike to work, we now shop at garage sales for clothes for the kids, we started planting a vegetable garden in our backyard, and I am now going to start making my own baby food instead of buying it.....those are just some of the ways the recession has affected my family.

Answer
We are feeling a bit of pinch these days as well, here a some things we have done:

stop eating out

stop extra spending

find things that are free for entertainment

searched garage sales, and consignment stores to supplement the new school clothes (50% new 50% used)

for school supplies this year we salvages some of the unused things from last year and washed up old back packs and pencil bags and lunch bags

we have started making our own laundry soap and fabric softener, which is saving us over $400 per year, we are also making our own cleaning supplies, and the benifits is it's all safe and natural and soooooo much cheaper and very easy to do

we have stopped food waste, it all gets eaten, or it's put in the freezer to use at a later date or it's turned into another meal

we are dabbling with a home garden, will do much more next year as this was my first time and wasn't sure I could do it

we have started canning

basically cutting corners where we can, and saving as much as we can

What do teachers want as Christmas gifts?

Renee

I thought of monogrammed lunch bags. Any ideas from Teachers? Trying to spend $15-$20 for each teacher

Answer
Teachers get a lot of stuff from various people during Christmas. I would go with a small box of Godiva chocolates or a Starbucks gift card. They do not want any more candles, soaps, lotions, etc. I mean, a cute ornament would be nice, nothing that says "teacher" but maybe a classy ornament for their tree, everyone has room for another ornament. I wouldn't get the monogrammed lunch bags, personally, but you could do a monogrammed tote for them.

What's the best way/product to keep a lunch hot for 4-5 hours?

periwinkle

I use cold packs to keep lunches cold, but what if I wanted to keep something hot? Is there anything on the market for that?

Answer
Thermos's are the safest thing. If you can't do that then just don't take it hot. IF you are keeping something hot for four to five hours and it isn't in a thermos...you are risking serious food poisoning.

Use a micro or eat something cold...don't risk your health. It should remain at 140 to be safe...anything under that after two hours is dangerous.

Keep cold foods cold and hot foods hot. Bacteria grow rapidly in temperatures between 40° F and 140° F.

Help keep cold foods under 40° F by using an insulated lunch bag or box. Store lunch bags in a cool area and out of direct sunlight. If possible, refrigerate the lunch bags.

If refrigeration is not possible, place a frozen gel pack on top of perishable foods. Or, pack ice in a tightly sealed plastic bag. You may need to use two bags to prevent leaking.

Frozen boxes of juice, applesauce, yogurt, or milk also keep foods cold, and they thaw gradually to become part of the childâs lunch. Sandwiches made the night before can be frozen individually in clean, tightly sealed plastic bags. Whole grain breads are best for freezing as white bread gets soggy.

Cold foods are often taken on field trips and picnics. To package bulk foods, fill an ice chest or thermal container with ice or gel packs, or use frozen cartons of juice or milk (placed in clean, sealed plastic bags to prevent leaking) to cover the food.

All foods placed into the chest must be cold before being packed. Prepare and refrigerate or freeze the food before packing. For example, cheese sandwiches can be prepared the evening before and frozen. At lunchtime, the sandwiches will be chilled, but not frozen.

Hot foods such as soup, stew, chili should be kept over 140° F. These foods should be heated thoroughly before packing. Next, fill a wide-mouth thermos bottle with hot water for several minutes. Pour out the water and fill immediately with the hot food. Tighten well.

Properly heated and packaged food should remain higher than 140° F for about four-six hours. To prevent burns, childcare providers and teachers should help young children open the thermos at mealtime.

How do I save money on lunch or any meal?

Q. I get fast food or eat at resturants almost on a daily basis. especially during lunch. i am wasting too much money. i wanna save up to get a 71 charger or something.

how can i get a good cheap meal? sometime i can get at costco where i buy huge quantities. fast and good in protein.
i need protein.

Answer
You have to start making and taking your own food with you..
It's healthier and you'll feel better because eating fast food has too much sodium and too much fat..
Make your lunch, dinner ...
If you cook at home, make a little extra for the next day.
If you don't cook at home, you're gonna have to plan a weeks meals before you shop once a week...
Buy lunch meat, tuna, eggs, cheese, veggies, fruit, crackers, olives, dairy (cottage cheese, cream cheese, yogurt, and chocolate bars...
Get creative by looking on-line for brown-bag ideas...
Martha Stewart is one, or Rachael Ray, Food T.V network..
Have fun with it, and get a Thermos for your drinks..
You can save a lot of money not buying drinks out..Bring your own water, make Ice Tea, etc..
G'luck and I'll be thinkin' about you!
I just made my husband's lunch..2 turkey sandwiches on whole wheat with lettuce, and a bag of grapes, and a chocolate brownie....

What to make my husband for lunch?

amwilliams

I'm taking my husband lunch today at work, can someone give me some good ideas of what to take? Something different than the same ol' sandwiches..

Answer
Why don't you take chicken caesar salads and breadsticks.....
You can buy a bag mix with the dressing and all, have your chicken grilled and cut up, ready to go. Just add the salad stuff to the bowl and combine. Serve with your breadsticks. If he needs more than that to get full, consider taking a thermos of soup. O Campbells makes those soups for the wave. Italian Wedding Soup would go great with Caesar salad.

Best gift to buy my best friend who got her 1st teaching job?

insulated lunch bag tote on Mimi the Sardine -
insulated lunch bag tote image

V

My best friend is set to begin teaching high school Social Studies. This is her 1st teaching job and I want to buy her a congratulatory gift. I was thinking an engraved leather gradebook but I can't find one and a Google search suggests that most grades are kept online now. Any suggestions on gifts or where I can get a leather gradebook would be greatly appreciated!

Answer
Forget the leather gradebook, nice as it sounds. I would venture to say that the majority of schools today all use computerized gradebooks and lesson plan format, not paper.

Does she have her own classroom all day, or does she float to available rooms? What about a nice leather trimmed desk set, or at least the desk blotter for the top of her desk? I always had a cheap one supplied by the school and always wanted a nice one.

For many years, my school always had wonderful teacher lunches with at least five choices. The two years it really went downhill so many of us packed a lot more. What about a quality lunch kit with a nice, insulated bag and reusable containers? That could be a hit!

I had a quality cloth tote bag in a briefcase style (not college backpack). It had a big center storage and some small zip pockets. My sister-in-law had my name embroidered on it and it had some school motif embroideries, too. Used it for years and loved it. Had a strong carry strap as well as handles.

If you visit her at home, does she need anything for her home office? She may need a new bookcase for teacher manuals or home reference books. She will need some storage for home office supplies, a lot more than she would have had in college. Storage tubs? A home file?

Easy healthy snacks to make in college?

RADiOACtiV

I need some healthy snack suggestions for when I'm off in college

Answer
I remember the curse of the Freshman 15! Back then, we only had some vending machines and a toaster over to heat things with! And the dorm cafeteria's idea of healthy was to serve pizza with spaghetti, creamed corn, and ham! So, if I had a do-over, here's what I'd check out:

1. Mini fridge in the dorm room
2. Microwave
3. Insulated lunch bag or tote for hot and cold items
4. Thermos

And, I'd create a "pantry" of items I could chow down on that would enhance the brain cells and not the waistline! These would include:

1. Almonds: the raw, unsalted ones are best, but I prefer the roasted and lightly salted ones myself
2. Protein: protein is a great brain regenerator! String cheese, lean roasted turkey, uncured ham and cheese rollups, trail mix (without all the sugar)
3. Fruit: fresh is best, but a nice treat is to mix your almonds with craisins or raisins. Dried fruit is good, but has alot of sugar. Stick with organic if you can. Apples and string cheese are a good combo when you're hungry!
4. Cereal: High fiber cereal bars, or cereal that you can eat by the handful, stick with high protein cereals and high fiber cereals.
5. Dairy: greek yogurt is terrific and low in fat while high in protein. Watch out for all the sugary ones that are out there. String cheese, cottage cheese, watch out for the canned cheeses or processed cheeses.
6. Chocolate: dark chocolate is best, look for dark chocolate with at least 65% cocoa. A little goes a long way, but some real yummy treats include dark chocolate covered ginger, acai, peanuts, raisins.
7. Water: pure, filtered is best and you need at least 8 glasses a day. Watch out for the sparkling waters that contain hidden ingredients.
8. Veges: fresh baby carrots, celery, cauliflower, broccoli, edamame, all count and can be easily dipped in a variety of sauces, including my favorite, spicy Ranch. Peanut butter is a natural!
9. Gotta have it: look for brown rice krispy treats, good chocolate, such as Green's or Lindt, sugar free or stevia made puddings, you get the idea.
10: Soup: watch out for the cream based ones, but sometimes a good bowl of clam chowder or tomato soup just hits the spot!
11. Bread/crackers: I go for gluten free myself, and enjoy rice crackers with a variety of cheeses and peanut butter.
12. Oatmeal: Not the sugary packaged kind. You can find unprocessed oats that are organic in the natural foods section.

Check out Trader Joe's, they have lower prices and a great variety.

Good luck and have fun!

http://www.amazon.com/Set-Tupperware-Tumblers-Seals-Colors/dp/B004FDDVZE/ref=sr_1_23?s=home-garden&ie=UTF8&qid=1342341109&sr=1-23&keywords=tumblers++tupperware

You really need insulation through the use of an insulation bag: keeps the cold and condensation droplets in.

You can also add reuseable ice to your tumbler; these do not dilute your drink and is ... reuseable.

Other accessories: ice pucks.

What is a good/healthy lunch for an athletic high school boy?

Pat M

He is determined to be a professional ballplayer (yes, I know the stat's of that happening) what can I do to help him nutritionally?

Current Lunch:

Turkey/Roast Beef/ or Peanut Butter Jelly Sandwich on wheat bread
Grapes or Apples (clementines when in season)
Chips or crackers
Cookies
cheese sticks

Obviously, I would love to cut out the chips and perhaps cookies could be replaced with something healhier.... would love suggestions!

Thanks!

Answer
Here is fure tips for eat a quick and healthy lunch for school boy, please see:
Stock up on lunch possibilities when you shop for groceries. Think simple -- a loaf of whole wheat bread and a jar of peanut butter; a package of corn tortillas, a can of black beans, and some fresh tomatoes; frozen veggie burgers, whole grain hamburger buns, and a jar of roasted sweet peppers. Throw together a few of your favorite ingredients, and see what happens!
On days when you buy a sandwich, go to a place that'll make one to order. Ask for turkey or roast beef, extra tomatoes and onions, and only a smidge of mayonnaise. Better yet, opt for mustard. Don't get tuna if it's mixed with lots of mayo. By skipping that eggy, oily spread, you'll cut back the fat and cholesterol significantly.
Prepare lunch items the night before right after dinner. This saves on clean-up time. Store food properly. In the morning pack foods in the lunch box.
Don't forget food safety. If refrigeration is not available, use insulated lunch boxes or bags with frozen ice or gel packs.

My Science club is going on a hiking trip soon. I've never been hiking before so I am wondering what kind of food I should pack for lunch and dinner and I do not want to eat peanut butter and jelly sandwiches the whole time.

Thanks.

Answer
Check with other members from your club. They probably have great ideas about what you can pack and where you can get it from. You have not give alot of info about the accommodations so it is hard to say. If there is a campfire at the lunch or dinner site, you can freeze bottle of drinking water and place it in an insulated bag along with a fresh bag of salad. There are plenty of dressings that only require room Temperature prior to opening. (They are marketed for the lunch crowd). Hidden valley ranch makes really cute small travel cups of dressing that would be perfect. The frozen bottles of water would keep the lettuce cool.

MRE's from a military surplus store make for great meals and they usually have alot of variety. If you have an outdoors store in your area (LIKE DICKS SPORTING GOODS) they have freeze dried meals.
In walmart you can find starkist tuna kits. They have relish, mayo and crackers in a kit with a spoon and crackers. you can mix it together to make tuna and crackers for an easy and cheap lunch. If you choose this option be sure to bring a few zip lock baggies so that you can take your trash with you and it wont stink upyour bag.

Trail mix will make for a good snack (walmart sells this also or you can make your own) for unbetween meal energy.

What are some good take-lunch ideas that don't require refrigeration or microwaving?

DrowEthel

I need ideas for lunches I can take to work with me but they can't be any that require refrigeration or microwaving because there isn't a fridge (and I don't have an insulated lunchbox) or microwave at work.

Answer
I have a few thoughts for you. First, there is this great lunch system that makes packing lunches super easy and you can win one free on my site (simply comment on food items already there, or add your own item - it doesn't take long at all). It is called easylunchboxes.com - you could win a container set and an insulated bag. If you don't want to enter, or don't win, I'd suggest buying an insulated bag and a couple little ice packs. Then, for packing lunches ... visit http://www.lunchtaker.com for a lot of ideas. We have a blog section that gives suggestions for things as well. Everything on the site is on the easy side, nutrition is included for all items you can be aware of how you are eating etc. Also, especially as it gets colder out, consider buying a thermos so you can pop leftover soups and stews and such in your lunch. We have a blog post about pre-warming thermos products to make them hold heat better that I'd suggest before you use one.
Good luck with lunch! :) Amy

healthy school lunches for highschool?

insulated lunch bag for adults on Insulated Lunch Bags & Lunch Boxes for Kids and Adults
insulated lunch bag for adults image

dancer1994

Okay so i will be beginning my first year of highschool this september, and this summer i lost 24 pounds! But it took a lot of work, and im not interested in gaining it all back. anyways last year my eating habbits were; skip breakfast, vending machines for lunch, pig out when you get home, then eat dinner. but odviously i've had to change that i now know to eat a good breakfast, healthy lunch, and small dinner. But the problem is im not a big fan of sandwhich foods, i find sandwhiches allways go soggy, and eating salads is just like putting a sign on your forehead saying " I AM ON A DIET" anyways i'll give you some things i do enjoy, chicken (slices or breasts) cream cheese, wraps, pitas, hummus, any sort of fruit or veggie. Does anyone have any recipes or ideas i could use for school lunches, they would be in my locker for a few hours. Also i allways loved granola bars, and those silly little 100 calories snacks. but odviously those are out of my reach now, does anyone have any low fat granola recipes, or any subsitutes?

thanks for any help you could provide!

Answer
You are so smart! You kinda answered your own question. Wraps and pitas hold the healthiest salads you can create! You could say they just hide them better! Make an awesome salad and add sliced chicken breast. Put them in the pita, or wrap them up in the tortilla/wrapper of your choice. Hummus is great in a pita or wrap, just change the veggies you put in... Cucumbers sliced, tomatoes, and of course some dill spiced yogurt. There is no end to the salad creations and combinations you can create. Adding lots of greens - lettuce, spinach, whatever you like, will give you food you enjoy and make you feel you are not depriving yourself. A hearty veggie wrap/pita will be filling and so tasty. You could wrap them in aluminum foil to keep them "cool", and I would check out some of the more "adult" style lunch bags. There are some really nice bags that insulate your food, and keep it fresher.

Cream cheese is one food I would stay away from, you could use non-flavored yogurt instead. Try seasonings that you like and experiment to find new combinations.

I would put two pieces of fruit into my bag. A nice piece of fruit would be a great snack at break, and then have one for lunch too. There is no rule that you cannot make your own 100 calorie goodies. There are really nice little snack-sized ziplock bags available, and check the nutrition label to find out how much you can put in the bag to equal 100 calories. Pretzels, lo-cal popcorn, baked-not-fried snacks, nuts, and low fat granola would be a nice little treat - no pun intended!

You sound like a smart young lady who has control of things. Keep going, and you will be happy with your healthy choices!

I'm going to Puerto Rico in July what are good family activities to do while down there?

Toni L

I am going to Puerto Rico in July for 2 weeks with my Dad (who's 53) and my twin girls (who are 3) for vacation. This is our first vacation that we have ever taken together. We are renting a car and staying in a hotel in San Juan. He has already made all the reservations and paid for the hotel and the plane ect; however, he has given me the task of figuring out family friendly activities to do while we are down there. All I can think of is, well...the beach! and El Morro. Any other suggestions!??! I do have umbrella strollers! And I'm not afraid to walk! This is my first vacation since I've had the girls and is way over due! (last one was in 2006). I don't mind going out of San Juan either. Before I had the kids I USED to be a bit of a traveler and go to places like Germany, Japan and South Korea just to name a few places. So I'm game for anything; however, with my dad being in his 50's and the girls being 3, I don't know how well they would fair. So any suggestions that would be insightful would be greatly appreciated. Thank you :)

Answer
SInce you guys are renting a car it gives you the advantage of seeing the best of what PR has to offer outside San Juan. The first place I recommend for you to go is down south near a small town called Guanica. There is a small mangrove cay with crystal clear calm waters that are perfect for little ones to play. Buy a set of inexpensive snorkeling equipment and bring it with you, the snorkeling is great around the island. You take a ferry here and need to bring what you need with you. I suggest to get a small disposable cooler, or just bring one of those insulated carry along bags so you and your girls have plenty to drink while there. Also you should do this on a Wednesday, stay away on the weekend, I've given you fair warning! http://www.puertoricodaytrips.com/gilligans-island/

Also on the south side, off the town of Ponce, is a great day trip to Caja de Muerto. My family and I went there this past summer and we saw dolphins! It's a pristine island with those dream like Caribbean waters, calm, clear and blue green. This is a weekend trip and you MUST make reservations in advance. It's worth it. The drive to Ponce is only an hour and a half by the expressway, and the docks are easy to find. You would need to leave San Juan early to make sure to make it on time. On the docks at La Guancha (the port in Ponce) you can feed pelicans, and watch huge fish swim around. Vender's sell little bags of food for them and the kids LOVE to feed them. There are also shops and restaurants to explore, it's really nice. http://www.puertoricodaytrips.com/isla-caja-de-muertos/

Another suggestion is to take a day trip sail out of Fajardo to Culebra with East Island Excursions. Culebra is a real gem. It has the Caribbeans #2 best beach, according to discovery chanel, called Flamenco Beach. The trip includes lunch, and snorkeling. http://www.puertoricodaytrips.com/culebra-east-island-excursions/

IF you want to get away from the beach PR has the most beautiful mountains, with waterfalls, rivers and lakes. On a Saturday or Sunday take a boat ride on a lake in Utuado to local restaurants right in the middle of the lake. It's called Dos Bocas, and it's a lovely setting with cool mountain air and great local food. http://www.puertoricodaytrips.com/lago-dos-bocas/

One of PR's most known and amazing sites is the Camuy Caverns, it's just west of Arecibo and is one of the worlds largest underground cave systems. You can take a guided tour, with a tram, and I think the kids and adults will be amazed. http://www.topuertorico.org/city/camuy.shtml

Just south of San Juan is the town of Guavate, near Cayey. Here is where the Puerto Rican specialty Lechon (roasted pig) is made. And on the weekend there are local arts and crafts being sold. When you make the turnoff from the highway don't be fooled by the few easy to get to Lechoneras right by the road. Just keep going and you will find the real Guavate, it's great not just for the food but for the many stalls of homemade goods for sell, this is where you should get your souvenirs. Just a little further down the road is a great mountain pool with a waterfall. It's an easy hike on a well maintained trail and the water is bright blue and makes for great swimming. http://www.puertoricodaytrips.com/guavate-lechon-and-music/
http://www.puertoricodaytrips.com/charco-azul-carite-forest/

The site i've given you most of the links to is great, I live here and I use it all the time! They give fantastic detail and their directions are spot on. Puerto Rico Day trips has lots more suggestions you should look at them all to find the perfect things you guys love to do. Don't forget to bring and use lots of sun block, and reaply often!! And if you ever need suggestions, directions or advice feel free to ask!
