Any other ways to lower bills?

Jennifer W

1. I have a programmable thermostat that stays about 5 degrees higher or lower than before(depending on the season).

2. I have a low-flow shower head with an on/off switch that keeps the temperature of the water the same.

3. I unplug all items not being used such as TV, computer, phone chargers.

4. I wash all laundry in cold water and hang it out on clothes line outside to dry.

5. I don't eat out much & take lunch to work.

Do you have any other ideas on lowering bills that I might have overlooked or not thought about?
I did forget a few things didn't I? LOL.

I do turn off all of the lights when I leave the room and also have the new energy saving light bulbs.

I dont have a phone line & have what I call a decent cell-phone bill. (I don't have many options and its the cheapest)

I also have cable tv & cable internet. Both are bundled and have the cheapest on both.

As far as transportation, I ride bike to church since its close. I have to drive to work since its a ways away. All other workers live in different areas so no I cant car-pool.

Answer
1. Look at how you're preparing and cooking your food. Heating the oven is very expensive. Try cooking enough for leftovers, and then zapping them in the microwave on the next couple of days. That way you only go through the expensive heating once. Stovetops aren't as bad, but they still require more energy than a microwave because of how much heat is regularly and constantly lost into the room. Also, cooking on cold days and reheating leftovers on warm days can make a difference.

2. Look at how well your home is insulated. Are the windows tightly fit, or are there leaks? Is the door flush with the floor, or is there a small crack?

3. Buy your groceries in bulk or at discount groceries. A lot of people I know save money on groceries by buying everything non-perishable at a discount store or in bulk about once every one-two months, and then buying fresh foods at a closer store. You can also decrease food costs by buying the generic brands instead of the popular name brands. Test out the generic brands and see if they work for you--some are the same, some taste worse, and some actually taste better. It depends on your personal preference.

Also, shop based on sales. Aim to pick up whatever is on sale when you go the store. It can help to write a list of what you *need* ahead of time, and then only allow yourself to deviate from the list for items that are on sale. Try shopping in the bulk foods section for spices, too--you can buy only a small amount, and it's usually a LOT cheaper than buying then in a jar.

4. What's your commute like? Can you take the bus, bike, or walk?

5. Do you have cable, internet, and phone? A lot of companies will offer deals if you combine them all. How often do you use your cable TV? Many programs are available on the internet with a small delay legally now. What phone plan are you using? Do you have a home line and a cell phone? Do you need both?

6. This site (http://www.energyhog.org/) contains a lot of information about small ways to save energy. Some of the suggestions may work for you immediately (like installing different types of heaters or things like that), but will, over time, reduce your energy bill.

7. When you set your thermostat, did you set it so that you would always be a little uncomfortable if you wore the same thing all year round? What I mean is, did you set it so that it will be cool enough in the winter so that you have to wear a sweater around the house, but warm enough in the summer that you have to wear shorts? Is it set to automatically let the house cool/warm during the summer? Have you considered "natural" cooling and heating (such as opening the curtains while the sun is coming in the window during the window, and then closing them when the sun is down to hold in heat; opening windows at night when it's cooler in summer, etc.)?

8. What are you doing for fun in your spare time? There are a lot of small changes you can make when you do eat out (like don't get a drink with lunch, or go to clubs on nights that don't have a cover). When you have your friends over for dinner, make it a potluck instead of providing all of the food and drinks yourself.

9. Use re-usable things instead of one-use things. Use cloth towels and wash them instead of paper towels. Get cloth napkins if you don't have any (try a thrift store). Get good-quality tupperware that you can wash and re-use instead of plastic bags.

Answer
You actually wear that stuff to school? That is why they call you a brat.

When I was a kid I know spoiled kids like yourself. Some of them paid poor kids like me to do their homework. Most of them failed miserably once they grew up and had to fend for themselves. Many of them begged money off me after their parents cut them off.

Also your type are seldom successful with women.

Should i take a purse to school or a lunch bag?

Q. Im going to high school and i want to start eating better. I want to take lunch so i can take water, fruit, etc. Also, i want to take a purse for personal reasons (ladies you know what im saying) but i will also be taking my book bag. I was thinking about puting my lunch bag in my book bag until i get to school and put my lunch bag in my locker but i still dont know. Will it be werid taking 3 things to school ? HELP. (No rude comments please! (: )

Answer
There are some really cute lunch bags. Some with longer straps like a purse. You have to have a purse and you have to have your books. You also HAVE TO HAVE a lunch so your just going to have to bring all three. Look for a really cute and trendy one so that when your carrying it you look cool still.

What bag do you use to tote baby stuff to/from daycare?

XXeviloliv

Does anyone have any recommendations for a good bag to tote my son's stuff to/from daycare? I'm currently using a reusable shopping bag, but it's falling apart.

Generally, I need to be able to fit 4 sippy cups, plus a couple small bowls of food, and a yogurt, plus from time to time a blanket/sheet, package of diapers, and spare outfits.

I'm looking for something possibly insulated, and measuring about 14 by 10 by 5 or so. I want it to be pretty simple, I don't needs lots of different compartments, etc. Anyone have any recommendations?

Answer
Why are you having to carry so much to daycare?
My daughters daycare provides food, bedding (cot and sheet) I only have to bring her blanket on Mondays, they use the same one all week, I take it home, wash it and send it back again on Monday..
Also, my daughter uses one sippy cup a day, they wash them at nap time and we bring diapers as needed, the teachers inform us when they are getting low and a spare outfit stays in all the kids cubbies for accidents...

Anyhow, just get a backpack that comes with an insulated lunch pale...

How can I best insulate my Jeep's computer to keep it cool or heat it up quickly to see if that's what ...?

John

I have an electrical problem in my Jeep whenever it warms up. I was thinking it would make sense to either try to keep the computer cool (it's in the engine compartment) and see if the problem takes longer to appear or heat it up and see if the problem occurs faster.

Any advice on how to do either?

I was thinking about a lunch bag with some ice-packets in it to help keep it cool or a hair dryer to warm it up..

Answer
in the beginning they put all the computers in the engine compartment and they burned out left and right.
What year is that Jeep piece of shit??
Heres what you can do to check it. ( we did this test years ago when they first came out) Get a hair dryer and warm up the computer and then try to start the car.
If you can figure a way you should try to get the unit out of the engine bay and inside the cab,,like under the dash.

dry ice in insulated bags?

Tobbie

is it safe to use dry ice in insulated lunch bags

Answer
No, it's too cold and should not be touched. It can cause frostbite. Use ice packs, they are safer.

would the ice pack in my lunch box melt if...?

Alliegator

I just packed my lunch for school tomorrow, and I put the ice pack in the fridge, with the stuff. but since the ice pack is ice because its in the freezer... would it melt in the fridge or stay the same?

OR

could I just keep the refrigerated food in the lunch box in the fridge, but just put the ice pack in the freezer, would the food stay good even though its inside my lunch box?

Answer
It would last a long time in an insulated lunch bag. If you were just sticking the ice pack in a grocery bag you would have a mess quite quickly.
It will melt in the fridge eventually. Just leave it in the freezer until you get ready to leave.

Help review and edit my story? NEED HELP NOW PLEASE!!! DUE TOMORROW!?

iveyrenee

This is my creative story for english & I need help editing it and what do you think about it? Please read all of it and tellme what you think PLEASE&THANKS!!

When the dismissal bell rang, I didnât rush. Why should I? Iâm not in a hurry and no oneâs waiting on me, except for maybe my brother. Iâm Mackenzie Woods, I live in New York City, and Iâm 15, almost old enough to drive, not that Iâll get a car when I do. Josh is my only brother, heâs 18, and he has his license but no car. My mom and dad, John and Elizabeth Woods disagree about everything.
Here comes my brother now, soon weâll be off on our 3 mile walk back home, in the freezing cold. âAre you ready to go?â He asked me as he walked up. âI guess so, are you?â I said as I grabbed the couple things I needed out of my locker. âAlright, letâs go.â He told me and I quickly packed up my bag, and picked it up.
As we walked, we talked about how our day was, and what weâre going to do tomorrow. We walk home because the buses take too long, my brother doesnât have a car, and we donât have much money.
Lots of my friends argue with their siblings, but we donât. I guess itâs because we get tired of hearing our parents do it.
Before I even walked through the door, I could tell they had been arguing. I could just feel it in the air. Sure enough as soon as I opened the door I heard yelling from the kitchen.
âNo, I will not allow my children to live here anymore.â Mom yelled. âWell, theyâre my kids too, so I think I should have a say in this too, shouldnât I?â Dad yelled back even louder. We walked quietly by the kitchen, not that they would have heard us if we weâre.
When I was finally upstairs locked in my room I quickly did my homework, and then went to take a shower. When I was through, I listened, but didnât hear anymore yelling.
Deciding it was safe, I went downstairs, and made myself two peanut butter sandwiches. I didnât see my parents but you could tell where they had been, things broken and on the floor, probably from being thrown.
âSomeoneâs hungry.â Everything inside of me died just then, knowing it was my dad. âYes, I am hungry since I didnât eat lunch today because I didnât have any money.â I said to him quietly. âWell, just donât eat everything, because I have to eat too.â That was my dad, always thinking only of himself. âOf course I wonât, I donât eat as much as some people do.â I said defensively. âAre you calling me fat?â He raised his voice a little. âI am not fat; I think you are the one that needs to lose a few pounds yourself!â He said, yelling so loud, the neighbors could probably hear him.
That was all it took, I burst out in tears and went running out of the house. Why would he say that? He knows how I was with anorexia. Eventually, I ran out of breath and I was in the park so I went over to one of the kid swings and sat down. There was no one there but me, and why would there be considering its November and itâs freezing cold.
I sat there for a while crying, I donât know how long, and then I saw someoneâs feet. They were just standing there right there in front of me, like they were watching me. When I looked up, I saw that there was a guy standing there looking at me.
âOh, hi, I saw you over here and it looked like something was wrong.â He said when he noticed I looked up. âYes, I need help but I donât think your going to be able to help me.â I said and sighed sadly. âWhat if I just sit here while you tell me whatâs going on and Iâll just listen?â He asked. I said yes, because I really needed someone to talk to.
We sat there, and talked for a while, and I realized it was getting dark and I probably need to be home soon, so I mentioned this. âYes, it is getting a little dark; maybe we should get you back home.â He said sadly. âNot like I want to go back there, but thereâs nowhere else I can go.â I said as I tried to clean my face up. We talked a few more minutes, and then we started to walk back to my house. Before we got there, he gave me a piece of paper and told me to call him anytime I needed to talk. He said âSee you at school tomorrow.â, and left.
As soon as I closed the door, my mom was there beside me. âWhere have you been?â She screams at me. âI was at the park.â I tried to answer calmly. âWho gave you permission to go?â she yelled at me again. âNo one did, I just went because I felt like it.â After I said that I walked out and went upstairs, while she yelled at me the entire time.
I could still hear her yelling, but I knew she would give up in a few minutes, because she doesnât really care and I know she wonât come upstairs. I grabbed the phone out of my dadâs office and went to my brotherâs room. âWe have to call Aunt _____ and see if we can move in with her, I canât live here anymore.â I told my brother. We called and she agreed that we should move in with her.
The next morning quickly got ready, digging through the piles of clothes to find something to wear. (I'm going to add the rest of the story)
After I finished getting ready, I grabbed my old backpack and threw the things I would need at my auntâs house. After I finished I went downstairs and Josh was already there so we left quietly before our parents woke up.
After school was over, we walked outside and there was Aunt __needs a name___ waiting in her car for us. She told us that we are moving in with her permanently. Thatâs when I knew my life was going to get a whole lot better.

Thank you also, I need a name for the aunt please!! (:

Ladies, how do you manage feeding breast milk while you work?

HappyBee

My baby girl is 3 months old and I exclusively breast feed her. I'm due to start work in 2 weeks time. I prefer to feed her breast milk as long as I could, so I want to pump some milk while at work so that my mom can feed her while I'm at work. I know you can save breast milk in the fridge, how long is it safe to save in the fridge? The milk I pump at work will be refrigerated at work and I'll carry that back home. I travel about 1 hr to get home, will that milk be wasted if I take the milk out of the fridge at work and travel home for an hr and then refrigerate back at home ?

For those of you who pump milk out while at work, how many times do you pump a day? How much do you pump? If you pump milk out at work and breast feed the baby while at home, will that be sufficient for the baby or does your baby needed formula milk?

Answer
I'm in the same boat as you--my daughter is 11 weeks old, and I'm going back to work next week, and plan on exclusively feeding her breastmilk. I have a coworker who had a baby three months before I did, and I talked to her about what she is doing. Based on those conversations, this is what I'm planning on doing.

First, get a cooler bag to transport the milk back home (an insulated lunch bag is good) and several ice packs (so you always have at least one frozen at all times.) When you transport your milk home, put it in the cooler with the ice pack, and it will stay as cold as if it was in the fridge, so you can easily transfer it to your home fridge. You can keep breastmilk in the fridge for up to a week, and in the freezer for up to three months.

Right now my daughter eats five times a day, so I am planning on feeding her in the morning before I leave for work, and again when I get home from work before she goes to bed. While I'm at work, I plan to pump three times a day to mimic her feeding schedule and keep up my supply. If I find that my supply is lower because my baby isn't there, I may try to pump some more.

Good luck!

healthy school lunches for highschool?

dancer1994

Okay so i will be beginning my first year of highschool this september, and this summer i lost 24 pounds! But it took a lot of work, and im not interested in gaining it all back. anyways last year my eating habbits were; skip breakfast, vending machines for lunch, pig out when you get home, then eat dinner. but odviously i've had to change that i now know to eat a good breakfast, healthy lunch, and small dinner. But the problem is im not a big fan of sandwhich foods, i find sandwhiches allways go soggy, and eating salads is just like putting a sign on your forehead saying " I AM ON A DIET" anyways i'll give you some things i do enjoy, chicken (slices or breasts) cream cheese, wraps, pitas, hummus, any sort of fruit or veggie. Does anyone have any recipes or ideas i could use for school lunches, they would be in my locker for a few hours. Also i allways loved granola bars, and those silly little 100 calories snacks. but odviously those are out of my reach now, does anyone have any low fat granola recipes, or any subsitutes?

thanks for any help you could provide!

Answer
You are so smart! You kinda answered your own question. Wraps and pitas hold the healthiest salads you can create! You could say they just hide them better! Make an awesome salad and add sliced chicken breast. Put them in the pita, or wrap them up in the tortilla/wrapper of your choice. Hummus is great in a pita or wrap, just change the veggies you put in... Cucumbers sliced, tomatoes, and of course some dill spiced yogurt. There is no end to the salad creations and combinations you can create. Adding lots of greens - lettuce, spinach, whatever you like, will give you food you enjoy and make you feel you are not depriving yourself. A hearty veggie wrap/pita will be filling and so tasty. You could wrap them in aluminum foil to keep them "cool", and I would check out some of the more "adult" style lunch bags. There are some really nice bags that insulate your food, and keep it fresher.

Cream cheese is one food I would stay away from, you could use non-flavored yogurt instead. Try seasonings that you like and experiment to find new combinations.

I would put two pieces of fruit into my bag. A nice piece of fruit would be a great snack at break, and then have one for lunch too. There is no rule that you cannot make your own 100 calorie goodies. There are really nice little snack-sized ziplock bags available, and check the nutrition label to find out how much you can put in the bag to equal 100 calories. Pretzels, lo-cal popcorn, baked-not-fried snacks, nuts, and low fat granola would be a nice little treat - no pun intended!

You sound like a smart young lady who has control of things. Keep going, and you will be happy with your healthy choices!

Vera Bradley Bag For School? Easy Ten Points?

liz

HellO! im looking at vera bradley tote bags for this school year. Im going to be a freshman in highschool, and i was wondering what type of bag do you think is best for carrying all my binders and books and such around ( obviously not all at once, lol (: ) so, i was looking at the vera bradley "vera" bag, do you think this is large enough? ive only bought one thing from vera bradley, and its just a tiny tiny purse for only like your phone haha. any color suggestions would be great too! thankyou!

Answer
I just got the vera for school and it is huge it will carry alot! I love it though, it is definately a great bag for school!! If you are not going to carry many textbooks the tote might be good for you, but I personally like to have extra room for things like a waterbottle and lunch if I need it so I would go with the vera!!
I actually recieved the tote as a gift for my graduation to use for school next year but when people started telling me it was too small I took it back to the vera bradley store and the ladies working there said most people get the vera or the pleated tote, but I personally liked the vera. They said the tote is good if you know that you will only have like one textbook at a time, but the vera can hold like 3 plus other books, so I would definately go with the vera! :)

Hope that helped :)

What do you think these people do on their lunch hour?

In the office where I work (it is a large, national company) every so often the branch manager and one of the ladies working there go out to lunch together. They spend about one hour and a half. When they return, the lady does not act or look the same as when she left. She acts kind of crazy, is disshelved, and is sweaty looking. Maybe I am naive, but in today's culture I wouldn't know if they are doing drugs or something else. They always bring back what looks like leftover food in plastic bags. I feel affected by this since I have to work there unless I look for another job. Could I please have your take on this? Thank you!!!

Answer
I bet they are smoking cigarettes outside. The wind and weather is making her look dissheveled. Ask if you can go to lunch with them. If they say no, your suspicions were correct. If yes, you will learn the truth./

Answer
What to wear:
a nice plaid shirt so you're not overwhelmed from thick clothes/heavy materials and old cute jeans (which you can roll up a little) and sneakers- NOT boots. Wear your hair up in a high ponytail so it doesn't get in your way and doesn't stick to your forehead if you sweat

What to bring:
â¢one of those large reusable water bottles filled (and maybe a plasticback up one)
â¢an energy bar if you get hungry
â¢a camera? :)
â¢your phone
â¢a lunch that doesn't take much room in your bag

Just bring a regular bag that actually goes on your back so you can remain balance on both sides

packing light for a vacation? help please, i'm clueless and so indecisive!?

Q. i'm going for a trip over thanks giving break. i can only bring a large bag like an oversized backpack because it has to be a carry on. so i need essentials. i love clothes and shoes, so how do i minimize my wardrobe for the trip. it will be cold so i also need a jacket. i will also need my cosmetics, but that is easy since i'm actually low maintenance (even though it doesnt appear that way). i need an outfit for the plane that i can also wear out to lunch. i need a casual outfit to go shopping in. i need a thanksgiving day outfit, something to go out for a nice dinner, and something to go out to like an arcade for a fam night. i also need comfy items. i love skinny jeans and long leggings. i have a very unique, vogue, trendy style. and i love heels but yet i love my converses.
any advice will be greatly appreciated since i'm clueless!!
thanks in advance!

Answer
Cometics, toothbrush-paste, deodorant, hairbrush, shampoo-conditioner(if not provided where you're heading) Hair stuff (rubber bands, clips, bows etc)(perhaps a curling iron or straightening iron) You never know how you might want to change your hair

now for the outfits.

plane and lunch- Tee-shirt and comfy, cute pajama pants. (if you don't mind going out in public with them on; i certainly don't :p )

thanksgiving- keep the tee on from the plane ride and wear a fashionable sweater over it with a skirt that matches. Finish with leg warmers and heels.

fam. night. keep the tee. (if you don't mind again) or bring wear a different one. Wear your choice of jeans and some converse.

For comfort, just rewear the pajama pants, the jeans from the family night, and the tee shirts.

so..

converse- heels
leg warmers
sweater
skirt-jeans-pajama pants
two-three tee shirts
thats about 7-8 items. Hopefully all will fit in bag. Carry your coat with you on the plane and just put it your seat. If the sweater doesn't fit, wear it over your tee on the plane ride, and just take it off when you get to your seat and put it with your coat.

Sandwich ideas for lunch?

Debbie

I pretty much each boring lunches all year round every weekday when i go to school. My school gives me no access to a microwave, so i can't have anything that needs to be hot. And i'm so tired of turkey and cheese and pb and j. So I need some good ideas for sandwhiches that i can easily bring to school that will stay fresh in a lunch box. I don't eat red meat, so that makes it hard for me to get some variety. The only deli meat i really like is turkey. So yes, can anyone give me some good sandwich recipes that fit my needs?

Answer
Tuna, egg and seafood salads are all great - just get an insulated lunch bag to keep them in, too keep them cool.
Also - try mixing up the breads and lettuces - try whole wheat or regular wraps, or pita bread. Try baby spinach or arugula instead of regular lettuce.
Cold pasta salads also make a great lunch and a nice change from sandwiches.

I DON'T HAVE TIME TO EAT LUNCH?

meg

is it okay not to eat lunch, i eat breakfast at 10:30 and i have work at 11 - 4:30 and i don't eat at all for 5 1/2 hours cus i'm waitressing and don't get a break is it bad to go that long with out eating, cus i usually eat alot of food, like every 2 hours but i eat right when i get out, i eat dinner at like 5

Answer
I have the same problem - I work at school and am not supposed to eat on the job. Pack some easy snacks that are easy to munch on and put it in an insulated bag with an ice pack. You can grab a bite when you have a quick moment:

sweet grape tomatoes
baby carrots
apple slices
orange wedges
veggie cheese slices on whole wheat crackers
sandwich, cut in quarters (wrap separately)

How did men accessorize the necessary ingredients to be prepared for what may lie ahead ...?

blu

... the same way women have always used a purse in the days before a bag of some sort was fashionable?
I used to use my lunch box when I was a blue collared worker.
tara-lol ....

Answer
My uncle wore a pair of overalls most of his life, many very deep pockets. He was a young man during the depression and not only had the things he needed to carry in his pockets, but would collect anything that he thought usable while out working on the farm. I always looked forward to him emptying his pockets at the end of the day just to see what he "found".

I've noticed most older men preferred shirts with at least one pocket and some refuse to wear a pocket-less shirt and such gifts are often sold at yard sales for pennies on the dollar.

I'm trying to get a shoe store (women's) up and going. I did the DBA, license, sellers permit, tax ID,etc.?

I'm attending a shoe trade show soon hoping to get merchandise for my store, is this a good route or how should i go about getting my merchandise.

Answer
This is a great route, it will give you an opportunity to get an over view of the industry and see the trends. Most trade shows will offer seminars for people in your situation, talking about marketing, trends in retailing, how to deal with employees, how to avoid/manage "shrinkage." Attend as many as possible. Remember, the people who make and import shoes want you to be successful. They need you to get their merchandise to the end customers.
Spend time in the booths and showrooms looking at a lot of merchandise. More importantly, spend a lot of time asking the sales reps questions. Get their cards and tell them what you are planning. Ask them if anyone in your town is showing their merchandise. (You don't want a competitor in the next block selling the same thing.) After you get home, you can call them back with additional questions. Sales reps can be your biggest resource.
Ask them for the names of some successful retailers IN OTHER CITIES. People in the business are often willing to give you tips so long as they won't be used in competition against them in the same marketing area. Ask retailers for their biggest mistakes so you can learn what NOT to do. If someone seems especially knowlegeable, ask if they would be willing to mentor you, and maybe let you call a couple of times a year with questions.
When you get back home, call your local chamber of commerce. They want to encourage successful businesses in town, big and small. They may have some sort of small business incubator programs or small business mentor programs. The Small Business Administration can point you to retired business people who volunteer to mentor young business people. They will have been down your road and can be a real help with what's critical and what's not.
Remember, you don't just need shoes, you have to have a store front, utilities, advertising, an employee or two, a way to accept credit cards, some place for customers to sit while they are trying on shoes, good lighting, add-on merchandise like hand bags, accessories, etc. You have to have something to wrap or bag sold merchandise that can serve as additional advertising.
Consider having a professional graphic person design your logo and signage. If it's chic looking, then a fairly simple store interior will seem chic as well.
Visit shoe stores and departments in fashionable cities to see how they do it. Notice where they are located--what sort of stores they are close to and what sort of traffic drives past.
(Never, never, never, locate your store next to a popular lunch restaurant. Their customers will take up your parking and your shoe clients will have trouble getting in between 11:30AM and 2:00PM. Try to locate near a complementary clothing store or better still a good hair salon.)
Most critically, you have to have enough funding or credit to see you through the first 6 to 12 months of operation.
Finally, go make friends with the business librarian at your local library. She can direct you to all sorts of business information about vendors and customary percentages for your type of business. It's dry nuts and bolts information, but it's the sort of stuff bankers and creditors will expect from you and your business plan.
