Looking for the BEST AUTHENTIC indian recipes/cookbooks?

Lala Lu

Hi :-) I'm American but I want to cook authentic Indian food, like Indian Housewife style NOT westernized restaurant style. Does anyone have some good suggestions for cookbooks I can try ?I have a little background knowledge but I want to be an expert :-) Thanks P.S. Anyone have a good Biryani recipe ? Mine never turns out quite right compared to my friend's Mom's.

Answer
India Cookbook: voted best Indian cuisine cookbook in the world

India Cookbook takes first place at the Gourmand Cookbook Awards 2011 in Paris

India contains 1000 easy-to-follow, authentic recipes covering the length and breadth of the country.

Phaidon's India Cookbook has won 'Best Indian Cuisine Cookbook in the World' at the 2011 Gourmand Cookbook Awards, held at Le 104 Cent Quatre in Paris last night (3 March).

Compiled from over 20 years of research by author and culinary academic Pushpesh Pant and drawing on over 1000 recipes from all over India's gastronomic regions, it is the first comprehensive home cooking guide to India's rich and colourful culinary heritage. The design and presentation of India Cookbook - which comes in a bag reminiscent of that of an Indian rice bag - has also been praised for its impact and originality.

The Gourmand Cookbook Awards is presented annually at the Paris Cookbook Fair and includes entries from authors and publishers in over 150 countries.

India Cookbook's win builds on Phaidon's previous success at the awards; Phaidon won 'Best Cookbook Publisher in the World' last year; the bible of authentic Spanish cookery 1080 Recipes was named 'Best Cookbook Design in the World' in 2008 and Breakfast Lunch Tea triumphed in 2007, winning the categories for 'Best Woman Chef Book', 'Best Cookbook Photography' and 'Best Cookbook Design'.

How do we get rid of beggars and their begging habits in India? (not in a bad way!)?

Kumar

We see kids/adults everyday in train/bus/signals/temples/market places begging for spare changes. How do we solve this?
Bull, you gave a good answer but politician will interfere in everything.

Ranjith, your answer is very much in my wave length. Politicians mostly focus on getting their expenses back, not on social welfare very much. They might even get a cut from beggars income (Royal beggars!)

Answer
I cant change this situation alone but our goverment and we can together could solve this issue. Only very few beggars are incapable but others are either begging for thier lazyness or compulsion of someone! Kids beggars, I dont know what is the purpose of child help line? Why cant they take care of those children and admit them in home care units and they can educate them there. For womens it is very easy by admitting them in some women welfare units and there they could learn lot of self employment business like dress stretching, lunch bags making, etc, etc. Even for handicaptted beggars we can apply the same thing. Old beggars can admitted in old home care units, recently, I watched in sun news, nowadays even there are also old people are doing some small manufacturings, handcrafted works, etc. So the old beggars can also do the same activities. For healthy men beggars we can arrest them there is no other way. Our goverment can allot certain amount for those home care units for every budget. So, this is only healthy way to eradicated beggars and also we can use them properly and change them into responsible citizens. But, namma madiri makkaluku thonura indha vishyam yen indha arasialvathikalugu thonna matikuthu. Very good question. Hope, india can change better one day.
@bull: I just explained my wish I dont expect nowadays politicians have to fullfill this but definitely people like me or kumar or anyone who have positive attitude will come to politics one day and they could change all this issues.
