Environmental friendly ways to pack lunch?

mbtafan

Does anybody know any environmentally friendly ways to pack lunch for school? Currently, I'm using a large plastic bag which I use everyday (a lunch bag that takes up less space in my backpack) and two plastic bags containing pretzels and a sandwich which I dispose of everyday. Any suggestions?
I do have a space contrasiant, though. I don't have much room in my backpack, so colllapsable plastic bags as opposed to containers that take up space are not an option. Also, I do not tend to resuse bags as somehow the peanut butter from my sandwich seems to get all over the bag.

Answer
Get an actual insulated lunch bag that can be cleaned and reused easier than a plastic bag. Also try using plastic containers that can be washed and reused instead of bags. They make sandwhich sized ones among all the other sizes and shapes. You could even get a drink container and fill it up each day from a larger bottle at home instead of carrying cans or bottles to drink every day.

Question about my lunch?

Loverrrr

If I put a sandwich with just ham on it in a ziplock baggie in a brown paper sack in my
locker. Will it still be good by lunch time?

Answer
i wouldnt try it. insulated bags are small and cheap, and if you dont wanna buy an ice pack, put a small bottle of water in the freezer and BAM! cold water and an ice pack in the same container ;)

I'm a sophomore and am going to convert to cold lunch.. Woo! I am looking for a metal lunch box because I love the old kind of feel for them. I think they're so cute. I'm not a big fan of the insulated bags.. Bento boxes are cool though.

Also, what are some good lunch ideas that won't perish in a lunch bag/box?

Answer
Paper bags, usually. Actually, almost ANYTHING doesn't perish in a lunch IF you freeze it first (don't freeze lettuce into a sandwich) or put it in some sort of vacuum bottle.

Can I carry a can of Ensure past TSA?

BOB PHX

I am diabetic, and recently started to take injection medicine that must be kept cold. I have an insulated lunch bag that I keep it in, along with Frozen Gel Packs. I also tell the X-Ray screener what it is, and no problem.

My question is, that I would like to carry a can of Ensure, which is a "meal replacement" when you don't have time to eat, but don't want your blood sugar to drop dangerously. Since it's technically not medicine, I want to know if I can keep a can of it in my lunch bag with my medicine?

IMPORTANT: I would like to hear from OTHERS who have done this, and what the results were. In all due respect, I am not interested in hearing from those who are SPECULATING, unless you are a TSA or Airport Employee.

Answer
I have not tried the Ensure (although that is a good idea) but I have gotten juice boxes through TSA with minimal problems.

Being a type 1, I will not travel without something with me for low sugars, especially now that most airlines do not serve food on domestic flights...at least they don't serve more than a snack and a bag of peanuts doesn't cut it.

TSA questioned me as to why I had juice boxes and graham crackers. I explained I was a diabetic and that it was needed in case I had an insulin reaction. I showed my Medic Alert card and I was allowed through. The juice and crackers was in a small lunch bag that fit into my backpack.

I also had an empty water bottle. The bottle sailed through inspection and I just filled it up at a water fountain near my gate. Easy.

Have a medical alert ID and if possible, a note from your doctor. Diabetics have the right to keep any necessary supplies with them at all times. Assert that right.
