Any other ways to lower bills?

Jennifer W

1. I have a programmable thermostat that stays about 5 degrees higher or lower than before(depending on the season).

2. I have a low-flow shower head with an on/off switch that keeps the temperature of the water the same.

3. I unplug all items not being used such as TV, computer, phone chargers.

4. I wash all laundry in cold water and hang it out on clothes line outside to dry.

5. I don't eat out much & take lunch to work.

Do you have any other ideas on lowering bills that I might have overlooked or not thought about?
I did forget a few things didn't I? LOL.

I do turn off all of the lights when I leave the room and also have the new energy saving light bulbs.

I dont have a phone line & have what I call a decent cell-phone bill. (I don't have many options and its the cheapest)

I also have cable tv & cable internet. Both are bundled and have the cheapest on both.

As far as transportation, I ride bike to church since its close. I have to drive to work since its a ways away. All other workers live in different areas so no I cant car-pool.

1. Look at how you're preparing and cooking your food. Heating the oven is very expensive. Try cooking enough for leftovers, and then zapping them in the microwave on the next couple of days. That way you only go through the expensive heating once. Stovetops aren't as bad, but they still require more energy than a microwave because of how much heat is regularly and constantly lost into the room. Also, cooking on cold days and reheating leftovers on warm days can make a difference.

2. Look at how well your home is insulated. Are the windows tightly fit, or are there leaks? Is the door flush with the floor, or is there a small crack?

3. Buy your groceries in bulk or at discount groceries. A lot of people I know save money on groceries by buying everything non-perishable at a discount store or in bulk about once every one-two months, and then buying fresh foods at a closer store. You can also decrease food costs by buying the generic brands instead of the popular name brands. Test out the generic brands and see if they work for you--some are the same, some taste worse, and some actually taste better. It depends on your personal preference.

Also, shop based on sales. Aim to pick up whatever is on sale when you go the store. It can help to write a list of what you *need* ahead of time, and then only allow yourself to deviate from the list for items that are on sale. Try shopping in the bulk foods section for spices, too--you can buy only a small amount, and it's usually a LOT cheaper than buying then in a jar.

4. What's your commute like? Can you take the bus, bike, or walk?

5. Do you have cable, internet, and phone? A lot of companies will offer deals if you combine them all. How often do you use your cable TV? Many programs are available on the internet with a small delay legally now. What phone plan are you using? Do you have a home line and a cell phone? Do you need both?

6. This site (http://www.energyhog.org/) contains a lot of information about small ways to save energy. Some of the suggestions may work for you immediately (like installing different types of heaters or things like that), but will, over time, reduce your energy bill.

7. When you set your thermostat, did you set it so that you would always be a little uncomfortable if you wore the same thing all year round? What I mean is, did you set it so that it will be cool enough in the winter so that you have to wear a sweater around the house, but warm enough in the summer that you have to wear shorts? Is it set to automatically let the house cool/warm during the summer? Have you considered "natural" cooling and heating (such as opening the curtains while the sun is coming in the window during the window, and then closing them when the sun is down to hold in heat; opening windows at night when it's cooler in summer, etc.)?

8. What are you doing for fun in your spare time? There are a lot of small changes you can make when you do eat out (like don't get a drink with lunch, or go to clubs on nights that don't have a cover). When you have your friends over for dinner, make it a potluck instead of providing all of the food and drinks yourself.

9. Use re-usable things instead of one-use things. Use cloth towels and wash them instead of paper towels. Get cloth napkins if you don't have any (try a thrift store). Get good-quality tupperware that you can wash and re-use instead of plastic bags.

I'm a person who loves to give practical gifts...and lots of 'em. What does he like? What does he need?

My boyfriend's birthday is actually coming up in 4 days. He is into weight lifting and running, likes funny stuff, and needs a watch. So, I got him a watch, a gift card to Foot Locker for running shoes, an insulated lunch box (he currently just uses a plastic bag) that I filled with healthy snack bars, energy shots, and sleeveless t-shirts (he likes to run and lift in them). He and I watched a Beavis and Butthead DVD his friend had, but we only saw the one and don't have it anymore, so I got him all three seasons of it on DVD. He likes Michigan State and drinking (we're of age, don't worry), so I got him a Michigan State beer glass that freezes when you put it in the freezer. And since every man is really a little boy at heart, I got him those cheese and pretzel snack packs, pixie stix, and some silly straws to drink some alcoholic drinks with.

For the party, I'm going to get him his favorite DQ blizzard in cake form, but I'm going to do the illustration on it based on a joke he made while we happened to see Ninja Turtles on TV while flipping through channels. I'm also going to make his favorite dish, and make my signature drink!

That's a lot of stuff, but even some kind of small gift package you can make by throwing a few of his favorite things into a box will work. When we first started dating, he got me a Christmas stocking with a card and filled it with protein bars (I'm into weight lifting, too).

My brother keeps stealing from me for weed, please help?

Mr.Brights

He's been stealing from me for years now and i don't think he's ever gonna stop im 16 he's 19 im still at school (yr 11) and he works in mcdonalds =/.

So a couple of years ago is when he fist started stealing from me it would be mostly my lunch money i didn't spend (school dinners are ughhh..) this would be £2-£3 he we scavenge my room till he found it and would check my school bag! then he moved on to my games where he probably has sold £500-£1000 worth of games along with my TV and PSP. this is when he'd drawn the line and mum called the police they police came shook him up and said if you do this again will lock you up basically. so a year pasts and he would used to ask for money i obviously said no but then he would ask for money like everyday and would pleed to pay me back more it started of i loaned him £20 he gave me £30 i gave him £30 he gave me £40 then he would just steal all my money (it's around £140) and i told my mum about this and my brother denies it saying he owes me £30 and he says to my mum how on earth do i get that sort of money, i get the money from my dad i see every weekend who gives me £10 pocket money and i usually go pool with him to win more ;) and i play a game to win perudo to win even more this usually leaves me with £20.
and if that's not worst enough he smokes weed with people i know from school and he chats bad rumours about me and he knows i can't do anything about it cause he's bigger then me and he always thinks he the bigger stronger man and he used to always be really violent when i was smaller he would fight be in front of my friends (im now roughly the same height and he hasn't laid a hand on me yet...).
I don't know what to do espically with my GCSE's coming up all this stress is soing my head in every time i see him i just wanna smash his head in but then i know it would probably be the opposite way round, i really have no idea what to do i try to revise but i can't =(
i have told my parents they want do f*** all =(

Answer
The only significant difference between your situation, and a similar one that I went through with my brother is that he was younger than me instead of older.
You have to first get your priorities straight. You say your GCSE's are coming up. I don't live in GB, but I assume that these are exams that you need to pass in order to qualify for college or university. That should be job one. The money that your brother has taken from you is gone, you won't get it back, so don't fret about it. Any future money you get needs to be put straight into a bank account, and you need to stop keeping any significant sums around that your brother can take. However, if he does take any more money the thefts need to be reported to the police. You aren't your brothers keeper, and if he goes to jail because you reported a theft it will be because your brother did it to himself, NOT because of you.
You aren't doing your brother any favours by trying to handle this problem within the family. Your brother is an addict, and addicts don't respond positively when family members try to "help".
Addicts simply look at family and friends who don't report their criminal activity as people who they can exploit and take advantage of.
Your brother is an addict due to bad choices he has made for himself. Only he can decide when and if he is going to get help, and get his life back on track, and stop making your life miserable at the same time.

The only thing you can do for yourself in the meantime is detach your emotions from your brother. If he is talking trash about you to your friends, then so-be-it.
There's nothing you can do to control that. Your true friends who know and trust you, will separate the facts from his fiction, and those who get it wrong will only position themselves as people you can't count on in the future. You have more important things to do than to run around doing damage control because of your druggie brother.

You have a future to build for yourself, so concentrate on your exams, and put your brother out of your mind. Insulate yourself from him as much as you can. Ask your mom to protect you from him. If she was a smart parent she would kick your brother to the curb. If he were my son, I wouldn't give him the right to live in my house and disrupt the rest of the family. Yes I would try to get him into treatment, but he wouldn't be invited back home unless and until he successfully completed a drug rehabilitation programme, and kept up with his work on staying clean.

I can say these things because I learned from experience that we can love our family members who become addicts, but still be tough with them.

You can't control your brother and his bad choices. But you can control how you react to the garbage he brings into your life. Either you let it get you down, and defeat you, or you learn how to cope and find success for yourself in spite of him.

Now it's up to you.
