When you pack your kids' lunches for school...?

Q. Do you put some kind of ice pack in there to keep things cool? Or do you do something different to keep it cool? Silly question, I know, but my son is in Kindergarten and he's been begging me to pack his lunch instead of getting a tray in the cafeteria. He's gotta show off his cool new lunchbox. ;-)

Answer
I am in my 25th year of packing school lunches. My oldest is 31, my youngest is 13 and she's the only one in school right now. I am mom to 4 and none of them were particularly fond of cafeteria food so I've packed quite a lot of lunches. I typically do put some type of ice pack in my youngest daughter's lunch. She generally likes lots of fresh fruits and veggies and she likes them to be cool when she eats them. For her main component of her lunch she prefers soup or dinner leftovers in an insulated thermos, but my older 3 typically liked sandwiches, sometimes peanut butter, but usually something with meat. For my older 3 I usually froze a juice box or pouch the night before than wrapped it in a paper towel and put it in a ziploc baggie. By lunch the juice would be thawed and the food was kept cold. My youngest doesn't care much for juice and rarely drinks it so I have a variety of small ice packs that I stick in her lunch every day. She carries and insulated lunch bag so things stay pretty cool. When my older kids were younger, none of our schools were air conditioned, so lunches stuck in a locker all morning in a regular lunch box could get pretty rotten. Now all the schools in our district have AC so that helps keeps things fresh, too. If my daughter is taking things fairly non-perishable such as a peanut butter sandwich, an individual container of applesauce, some baby carrots, and water, than I don't always feel it's necessary to put an ice pack in, especially in the winter when it's usually below freezing where we live.

Lunch for Picky Eaters?

My daughter is very picky and I need to pack her a good lunch.
She is vegitarian, loves fruit and cant have a microwave to heet/cook things at school.
also she dosent like eggs.

Any suggestions??

also she dosent eat vegies

Answer
Get her a good thermos to keep things hot until lunchtime. Also get an insulated lunch bag to keep other things cold. Some of them are very stylish anymore...not like when I was a kid!

Various wraps along with fruits, veggies and dips should take care of her needs. Don't forget cookies occasionally!

How do you bring lunch in high school?

Matt L

I'm a freshman in ontario, canada. school starts tomorrow. i've only been attending a private school my whole life but i'm going to a public high school so i don't know what the differences are. for lunch, up until now, EVERYONE carried this lunch bag at my privaet school:
http://goshopping.thestar.com/shop/product--catId_1002903__locale_en__catCrumbIds_1002463-1002903__productId_8209656.html

which their parents packed.. now i'm going to a public high school so i have no idea how the other kids pack.

so MY QUESTION: how do kids pack their lunches in canadian PUBLIC high schools? like in a plastic bag, a brown paper bag, or just the insulated bags i showed you?? or do most kids just buy their lunches from the school cafeteria? how do kids eat on the first day of high school??
so would it be okay to bring a lunch bag like above or would people think i'm a little kid or something?

Answer
Well, at my school, most kids buy...but of the few that do pack (that I've noticed), they use plastic bags and just throw them away when done.

just moved to geneva, switzerland. need to find insulated lunch bag for 4 yr old kid, for school. Help!

I would love to be able to take a bottle with expressed milk to the shops or when we are going somewhere that breastfeeding is a little akward. Can I store the bottle in one of those insulated bottle bags? Can I maybe take the frozen breast milk bags and sterilised bottles and heat when needed? I am not sure how long I can keep it out of the freezer before it is ruined. Thanks :-)

Answer
Yes, you can do this.

Freshly expressed breast milk can be left out at room temperature for at least six hours.

Frozen breast milk can be stored in the fridge for 24 hours once it's thawed. Frozen milk loses some of its immune properties and isn't as resilient to bacterial growth as fresh milk is. It would be fine to tote it along in a small insulated bag (like a lunch kit) with an ice pack to prevent it from thawing too quickly. For both of my kids, I've also brought along a thermos of hot water to heat bottles in once they were ready to eat.

Refer to this chart and the accompanying article - it will help you figure out how to store and transport your milk:

What's the best water bottle for a kid's lunch box?

I've been out of the loop for a while. Are Siggs still a big deal or have they been passed up? It seems like most water bottles we find end up with a slow drip when on their sides after just a few uses.

Answer
Ha! You've come to the right place, I happen to be anal about water bottles and have been on a big campaign to find a water bottle that a) is leak proof, b) is thermal and c) the kids can actually open by themselves.

I love the contigo stainless steel ones.

S'well also makes insulated leak-proof bottles for kids, but I'm not sure how easy they would be to open. I actually e-mailed the company to ask if their bottles are leak PROOF and they are.

Kleen Kanteen makes good ones but the sport bottles are not leak proof, they even say that on their website.

My kids are 3 and 6 and wouldn't be able to easily open a bottle that has to be screwed on and off, so we chose contigo. They've been shoved in back packs, dance bags, gym bags, lunch bags, and never leaked.

EDIT- Apparently we have a water-bottle-hater in our midst, LOL! Lots of thumbs downs!
