Does it make sense to put an insulated lunch bag in the refrigerator?

I've noticed that my co-workers at my office put their insulated lunch bags in the refrigerator. Since the purpose of an insulated lunch bag seems to be to protect the contents from the outside environment, would it make more sense to remove the contents from the bag and put it directly in the refrigerator?

Answer
I do it coz there is no room for a cold pack in the lunch bag. My food doesn't stay cold. I use the bag to carry my lunch. I need to keep it cold. It just makes sense to me. I'm not losing any part of my lunch to someone who will take it if it's not in the bag. Been there, done that.

How do you pack a bagel with cream cheese in a preschoolers lunch if the lunch bag is not refrigerated?

Whitelotus

My son's preschool has him keeps his lunch bag in his personal cubby and doesn't heat up food. Any hot foods are put in a thermos.
I would like to send him 2 mini bagels with cream cheese for lunch.
We leave at 8:30am and he eats at 12.
Do I send it cold? Warm, wrapped in foil?
I don't want the cream cheese to go bad, nor can I send it separately... Thoughts?

Answer
the cream cheese won't spoil in that length of time.
In fact, warmed like that will make it easier to spread.
you have a 4 hour window for food to be in the "danger zone" which is above 40 degrees and below 140 degrees. After that time the food should be discarded.
This is food service guidelines.
That means that it is still edible at the end of the 4 hours. It does not magically spoil at 4 hours 1 minute. It is still safe to use but don't stretch it too much after that.
cheeses are meant to be served at room temp and cheese sits out all the time at wine and cheese tastings and other big fancy meals. They don't do any of those functions in a fridge.
Your time table is fine.

I've seen the infomercial countless times advertising the Packit freezable lunch bag that keeps food cool up to 10 hours. Anyone have one of these and what are your thoughts on it?
Thanks!

Answer
They work about the same as any other freezer pack. It depends on the temperature where you leave your lunch.

What to include in a lunch bag for a Toddler?

purplehear

My 4 yr old nephew is starting pre-k in a couple of days and idk what to put in his lunch bag. I know to include a fruit a juice box but idk what else as the main thing!

Answer
My daughter is 4 and I pack her a lunch a few times a week (if she doesn't like what they are serving for hot lunch in the cafeteria).
Here is what I will usually include (not all at once, of course)

Main:
Turkey wrap
Peanut butter sandwich
Turkey rolls with pepperoni (I just roll up sliced turkey and secure with a small toothpick)
Dry cereal with a small container of milk
Egg salad

Fruit:
Grapes
Sliced Strawberries with kiwi
Blueberries
Pineapple
Melon (whatever is on sale)
Peeled and sectioned oranges

Veggies:
Carrots with a small container of ranch dressing
Jicama
Raw Snow peas
(she's a little picky about raw veggies so I don't usually pack as much variety)

Treats and Other Stuff:
Homemade pudding
Homemade Jello (very easy to make with fruit juice and unflavored gelatin)
Go-go Squeeze Apple-Banana Pouches
Muffin (usually blueberry, pumpkin or banana nut, basically whatever I have made recently)
Cheese cubes
Animal Cookies

I will usually include juice, milk or water to drink. Invest in a small thermos for his drink, that way you can choose what goes inside. Most juice boxes are almost all artificial sugar, at least if you are putting the juice in you can choose something with natural sugars (100% juice, not the fruit punch junk) or just put in milk or water (my daughter loves water in her lunch, she doesn't really drink much milk unless it's on cereal).

I have a Vera Bradley lunch bag and i got a huge stain on the inside (from yogurt) and it wont go away! ive tried soaking it in water, and hand and machine washing it. I've heard vinager might work but i dont want to damage the cloth pattern. Any ideas?

Answer
Maybe you can wash the bag in your washer? I wash my bookbag in the washer and it works fine. I hang it to air dry, not machine drying. If your lunch bag is made of clothe or nylon you likely could wash it right in your washer and that would get rid of the yagurt.
