The natural resources such as gold, chromium, antimony, coal, iron ore, manganese, nickel, phosphates, tin, uranium, gem diamonds, platinum, copper, vanadium, salt, and natural gas.

This whole answer is a bit spastic, but bear with me a bit...
First, you need to classify that random list of seemingly unrelated resources into groups, and then determine what all members of a given group have in common in addition to what all the groups have in common, and then determine how trees impact what they have in common.
My thoughts involve the following:
Erosion (all on that list are harvested/mined from the ground, which is of no use if it washes into the ocean, with natural gas being the exception)
Energy (energy is required to harvest/mine all of these things, which is provided by trees in several forms from the machinery that does the harvesting to the paper bag that the construction worker carries his lunch in. Also, all matter is energy. Physics for the win.)
Utilitarian replacement (can wood or products obtained from wood or other resources protected or conserved by the presence of wood be used to replace either the resources themselves or to create a new mechanism that renders those existing resources no longer useful for that specific task?)
Economics (does trade in wood and/or wood products impact trade in any of the listed resources?)
