Help entertaining kids?

Tori

I babysit 2 girls ages 9 and 5. I printed some things for them to color and practice handwriting. They like doing school stuff once in a while but the 5 year old isnt very smart for her age and gets distracted easily. And she HATES coloring...absolutely despises it..idk why. Their parents don't limke them using the computer or watching a lot of tv which entertains them the esiest and when they dont know what to do, they fight (this happens often) i dont need tips on deal;ing with the fights...i can handle it but what are some things we can do? We play board games so dont suggest that please. Maybe some crafts or things I can print out...I havent tried paper dolls yet for the little one but i am thinking about it. The crafts cant involve a lot of stuff though cause they dont have much to work with. HELP!
thanks

Some of my personal favorites:
*Dress up and take pictures
*Make an obstacle course
*Create a mini olympics
*Make a tower with only newspaper and tape
*Put on a puppet show (make puppets with lunch bags)
*Go on a scavenger hunt - make a list with things that are around the house like pennies and socks
*Make a mini golf game with paper towel cores and small cups
*Cut out pics from old magazines and make a book
*Make paper airplanes
*Create "clothes" using only toilet paper, newspaper, and paper grocery bags - put on a fashion show
*Record a story onto a cassette, be sure to make sound effects.

Could do more but I have to go back to my kiddos. Remember to recycle the paper when you are done. If they don't have these things available then plan ahead and bring some along. My son doesn't like coloring either but he LOVES watercolor.

What kind of lunch should I bring?

Q. For my first day at my first job. She said they have refrigerators but I don't know anyone well enough to trust my food in a refrigerator because someone might take it I would rather put it in my locker

Answer
Put your lunch in the fridge. Put your name or initials on it. If there's anything separate from a lunch bag that's perishable, add the date as well. If you put it in your locker, it will attract ants, & everyone will talk about it for the rest of your life.

I'm sort of kidding because I have put hot rice & veggies with chutney in a nylon lunch bag in my "cubby" which we have instead of lockers, & it was always fine & even stayed lukewarm until lunch, meaning I could eat it without waiting in line for the microwave. However, I did leave some wrapped candies that were given to me over a Christmas vacation, & there were ants everywhere, including the cubbies above & below mine. Apparently, they weren't tightly sealed. When I arrived, the others had taken them to the outdoor trash can, but there were still some ants everywhere. Once in awhile, someone will still mention it years later. Coworkers have long memories about selective things.

You can put frozen packaged entrees in the freezer with your initials & everything else in the regular part. I label everything. If it's too attractive, put it in a bag like a brown paper bag or a nylon bag. Otherwise, it might look like you've brought a bag of nuts or cookies to share if they're not hidden away, or unmarked yogurt might look just like somebody else's. A clear bag of pistachio nuts is going to be tempting to take them one by one. Ditto for a box of Girl Scout Cookies. Aww...put them out to share. LOL. Somebody might think that milk for coffee or a bottle of juice is communal property. With initials, though, you'll probably be okay.

Bring whatever you like to eat. Use caution about anything that might spill over in the microwave or toaster oven. Don't ever cook fish in the microwave because it smells up the whole room. (It's still a topic for dispute at my job. I vote for no fish. Snarl.) You might want to bring sandwiches until you find out if there's a microwave & other fine points like waiting time, etc. Can also bring stuff like a serving of pasta salad or bean salad or a green salad. Please do label & date that bottle of salad dressing. Could also bring crackers & cheese. Put your banana in your locker, but don't forget it. An apple or orange could be in either locker or fridge. The fridge is probably best, but do put it in a labeled brown bag. Otherwise, sure looks like mine.

Bring something to share once in awhile like cookies, cake, bagels, chips, fruit, whatever. Watch to see how others do it. Usually it's done by putting it in the middle of the Staff Room table at the start of the day or when you sit down for lunch. 10 minutes later, & it's gone. Kidding, sort of. Sometimes it takes a couple of hours. If a dessert is for a meeting when it's your turn to furnish it, wrap & label that, "For the meeting!" & put it in the fridge. Hopefully, that will work. Could wrap it in a big brown bag to hide it from view & to make it less tempting.

Our fridge is pretty loose but fairly neat & clean. I'd say things almost never get taken. I say that because they don't look that appetizing to me. (except one person's bag of roasted pistachio nuts, & I've eaten a couple every once in awhile.) Mainly, it's more important to remember that they're there. Some people totally forget leftovers from takeout food, & of course, it eventually goes bad.

Other places are more old-fashioned. They will have shelves full of the old-fashioned brown bag lunches with sandwich, apple, & a tiny bag of chips in each one. They may even have deadlines for removing your old stuff so the fridge can be cleaned. Whatever the system, there's usually a schedule for taking turns with the clean-up. That's if they're smart, that is.

Congrats on your new job. If you watch a few different people to see how things are done & avoid saying anything bad about anyone or any gossip at all, you'll be just fine. When in doubt, ask.
