A question about calories?

watergrass

Yesterday I ate an eight ounce bag of licorice (780 calories) and it made stop to think about calories. My question is: Are there differences between types of calories?

If I was doing strenuous yard work all day and took a lunch break, I would rather eat 1500 calories worth of hamburgers than 1500 calories worth of licorice. The hamburgers I could see providing the energy required to get through a hard day whereas licorice wouldn't seem like it could provide the energy, yet they have equal calories. I don't get it???

Answer
A calorie is literally a measure of energy. However, hamburger calories have LOTS more nutrition and burn more slowly than the sugar based calories of licorice. The sugar calories are considered "empty" calories because they deliver no nutrition. The carbohydrates in sugar are very simple and break down very quickly, so you're hungry soon after.

What should i give my dog for lunch and dinner? He hates store-bought food.?

Q. I have a one year old pug, Buddy. We bought him all types of dog food from the market - canned or dry, any flavor. But he hates it. So we give him bread/milk/omelette mixed with leftovers (we are ovo-vegetarians) We tried giving him rice and bananas but he doesn't like them either. He eats rice if i mix it with omelette, but not otherwise. Is it okay to give him just bread/milk/omelette? Is it healthy for him? If it is not, then what should i give him?
Thanks a BUNCH!

Answer
This is why vets are afraid of dog owners feeding home made or raw.

Your dog will easily die a slow painful death with that kind of diet. It's not balanced. What makes you think bread, milk and an omelette would be balanced nutrition? First, most dogs can't break down lactose, so he won't be getting much if any calcium from milk. Second, BREAD? Why...I just .. why would you think bread is healthy for dogs? If you look at any of those bags of kibbles or cans you bought, does it have "bread" or "flour" in any of those ingredients?

What you should give your dog is a FULL VET PHYSICAL and blood work to make sure nothing is physically wrong which can account for his low appetite. If that's all fine or if you've already done that, then you put down a healthy dog food for 15 minutes. If he doesn't eat it, take it away and put it down again in a few hours. A healthy dog will not starve himself.
